I realize most of you understand this, but for the few that think it's more the players, let me emphasize one more time how big of a deal a great coach can be to a team or program. Case-in-point in today's lecture: Illinois. The difference between last year's team and this year's team is tenfold. Illinois looks incredible this year. Look at Alabama with Saban (granted, Alabama's history helped fuse the perfect storm as well). Kelly with Notre Dame is a great example too. The bottom line is, the athletic departments that understand this, know how to conduct a proper coaching search and who are willing to pay the necessary dollars for the big-time coaches usually end up on top in the end.
Yes, clearly this Illinois team has proven it is has been coached far better than last year's team based on how the have survived their incredible difficult schedule.
Yeah, the coaching is why Illinois has started 10-0 this year
Last year, their coaching sucked and they started... Oh wait, 10-0
So, does this mean we should still fire Roushar?

What about when Notre Dame was paying out the butt for Weis? They were spending the "necessary dollars" for that guy and where did it get them?
And that's not even mentioning that you're comparing a place like Illinois to ALABAMA and NOTRE DAME. Are you actually alleging that if Illinois throws the right "coaching switch" that they can attract top athletes and compete overnight? Those are two of the most iconic and historically relevant programs in the country. They have a lot more going for them than just the head coach.
