This team is a poor man's version of the 2001 team. A lot of individual talent that gels at times, and is more often than not enough to win. But it doesn't have that x-factor of a Cleaves or Neitzel orGreen as a true leader, and will have a ceiling as to what they can achieve. That squad was absolutely good enough to win it all that year but when AZ made their run in the second half of the FF game, everyone just stood around waiting for someone else to grab the team and take control.
Nix was elected by default - he's a senior, so he must be a captain.
Next Year's Captains = App, Valentine, Trice (maybe Payne and Dawson)
I'm with you.
And, "leadership" is getting a tad overblown here. Make your shots and play defense.
Its stupid shit like this that shouldn't even be in the news. Why even write the article? OMG a college kid skipped a class!!! This happens everywhere and its so stupid that writers feel the need to publish garbage like this. Journalism has really taken a big shit over the last 10 years.
I love all the people on here talking all high and mighty too. I'm sure none of you ever skipped a class, smoked weed, drank under 21, etc. Get off your high horse. He's a 20 something year old kid who came from the ghetto. Get off your high horse and give the kid a break.
It's news because Izzo sat him. Anybody else it probably isn't news, but face it Nix has earned his stricter rules with his history of behavior. Nix has to know that he is being watched closer, and as a result needs to drag his lazy ass to class. It is not captain behavior otherwise. I like the big fella, but he is not the ideal captain for MSU hoops.
Noone on here is the Captain of the current MSU basketball team. All I will say is that when you are in the position Nix is in you are in a giant fishbowl. You don't screw up and you're lauded. You do screw up and everyone knows it. He really needs to realize that.

It is ALWAYS a great day to be a Spartan!!!!
Look at it this way: being an athlete is essentially their job. It is paying their tab for school and they're expected to commit and perform at their craft.
Now, if over the course of 4 years, your performance was lagging behind your peers' because you didn't put in enough effort (like Nix's weight problems), you just decided you were going to take a week off because you weren't sure if you wanted to be with your company (Maui), then you get a DUI causing you to miss time at work, and then you miss a staff meeting (class and tutoring), how happy is your boss going to be? I know if I had that record at my office, I certainly wouldn't get a promotion (named a captain).
No one is super upset that he skipped class. I think they're perturbed that Nix has been given a good amount of time to grow up but from the outside looking in, he's still lagging in that regard.
Personally, I think we all need to shut up about it - Izzo probably knows more about mentoring kids of Nix's age and background than almost all of us, so trust him.
I've only skipped two classes... today
Nix has come a long ways as a Spartan, I think he's going to come out a better man at the end of his run at MSU. Go Green!
You are a voice of reason...
I've noticed Nix looks like a mother f'n Oak tree when he sets those high screens for Appling.
He's tough on the boards and gives us a great presence in the paint. We are going to miss him when he's gone.
It's really ignorant to compare average college kids to one of the captains of the MSU basketball team. Like, super ignorant.
That said, I try not to rag on guys for little things like this. However, it wasn't all that little in Izzo's mind, and I respect that. He knows he's more than just a basketball coach to these guys, and if he wasn't on Nix's ass to go to class, he might never go.
And a beat writer wouldn't really be doing his job if he didn't talk to Nix and write about his and Izzo's thoughts on the matter. It's news if a regular starter sits because of academic reasons, or any reason for that matter.
Bad post. Do better.
Teams can't stop him one on one, and when they double him he's getting better at kicking it out or finding the open man. He will be very important down the stretch.
With Appling driving (and sometimes dishing) and Harris hitting 3's, this team is coming together. Leadership talk will disappear with victories.
Good post +1.
This team at full force on a neutral court can play with anyone in the country.
One break? Or five? Not really the first head-scratching move from Nix since he's been at MSU.
As an athlete, you either go to class or you don't play most places. Tends to be the rule. He broke it. That's the difference between an athlete skipping class and your run of the mill white kid from Birmingham or Lake Orion turning the alarm off on his cell and sleeping through his 9 AM class. Nobody gives a fuck what that kid does and there aren't any rules for him.
He's starting to run into trouble with that maneuver of trying to dribble out and around to get out of double teams. He's got to kick it right away, or put up a garbage shot right away. Even if it's a prayer of a shot, half the time he gets fouled and if not numbers are good for the offensive rebound.
Just so I'm clear Keith Appling is a captain now too right?
