did you guys get a load of this kid yesterday? I just rewatched the first half to see if he lived up to the spring hype and he actually surpassed it. He got the better of Hoover a couple times which I couldn't believe, but then his feet were good enough to block Rush multiple times. On Tompkins nice run off left tackle he turned Darien Harris to the outside with ease and spring Nick.
I continued to watch him throughout the game and didn't see him get beat once. Flozell Adams was interviewed yesterday and said the key to playing Oline at a high level is good hands and feet....I'd say this kid has both, as his technique is impeccable. If Burkland and France continue to have health problems, this kid is going to play and play ALOT.

Gholston and Calhoun have both said he's one of the hardest OTs to get around....quite a compliment.
Kid is a coach's son. Real gym rat, high motor, good football IQ.
Needs to add bulk and work on run blocking but he's probably our best pass protector.
the thing is Macks....IF someone would have told you a month or more ago that he'd block the guys I mentioned THAT well would you have believed it? I would have laughed.
I didn't pay much attention the first time. I will watch it again tomorrow.
Yes, but if you told me that prior to the TCU game I wouldn't have.
Gholston sought out Staten after the victory and attributed his big game to having gone up against Conklin in practice the last month.
He's white. Did I ever mention that?
I remember reading that but to be honest....just thought Will was being nice...yeah, I'm serious. Maybe boost the kid's confidence ya know? Now I'm realizing he was dead serious. It's about time we struck gold with a kid and didn't have the shit luck we've had for so long with guys like Barrett, Ray, etc.....
I posted something to this effect last night, but after re-watching the game, Conklin was unbelievable. He really dominated Rush, and that is saying a lot.
absolutely haslett...which is why I started the thread....I'm not saying he's the next Flozell Adams but the kid looks to be nails at this point. How many stars was he again? Sorry...had to.
No star pref walk on.
I was more impresses by him eating up Lyles in pass pro than Rush.
Coach D tends to give the benefit of the doubt to veterans so I doubt he'll start over Fou or France, but I think he will get a good one for us.
I agree, and I fully expect our line to look like:
However, how many years in the past have we had this kind of depth?
Conklin, Allen and Clark can all really play, IMO, and we have other solid options as well.
I dunno haslett.....I would say France will NOT start over someone like Jack Allen but as I recall Allen struggled at Guard last year. He didn't take off until Jackson got hurt and he moved to Center. IF he would have been healthy all spring I absolutely would think he'd take that Right Guard spot. BUT.....he has been hurt and so you are probably right.
It just makes me hesitant to think of France at Guard....he hasn't played much there and his pad level and technique could be lacking as he's been a tackle for quite some time now. We shall see, but I do agree with you on the depth, it is encouraging.
Staten has said France is a guard that has been playing out of position at Tackle. He has a big body and can move people, Allen would have the edge when it comes to pulling though.
You forgot film room junkie.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
Gives MSU an experienced and enormous right side of the OL. I like it. Heck, just put Conway at LT (6'6 330) and have Dennis as a blocking TE (6'7 309).
FWIW, he's the reason why the staff was comfortable taking just Finley at OL last recruiting class. Kid just has "it"; proto-typical size for a LT (6'6 310). I figure he apprentices for a year behind Fonoti and gives the staff full confidence in moving France to OG.
This is set to be the most experienced OL MD has had since his debut year.
If they stay healthy, I think this will be Dantonio/Staten's best OL by far. It's my main/only reason for optimism about the offense.
Shhh. Every single year I hear about depth and technique and gelling on the OL... We get injuries across the whole thing and I hear the curly shuffle playing....
Please dear Lord let us have 5 who play 10. Please.
I might get shit for saying this, but I thought the OL looked pretty good as a unit on Saturday. Given the fact that we were down a few men and split in half really. Pretty decent pocket and a couple of good runs for each of the backs. Langford may have been the least impressive because he didn't break off a big one but he seemed to get 3-4 every time to me anyway. In all, I thought it was a great showing by Conklin, and a good one by the line in general.
I thought he was joking with that post
laying in the weeds
Hope Fou is a good LT. Most mobile but I guess I expected him to show some more power in the run game.
I think you might be overselling how good Tyler Hoover is if you're getting excited about our offensive line's ability to block him. He's been an average Big Ten d-lineman since he was first injured a couple years ago. I hope I'm wrong, but I really don't expect Hoover to do much in the fall. He's consistent and does a decent job not letting the offensive line get to the linebackers, but he's nothing spectacular.
If we still had a guy like Worthy and Conklin had shut him down, then I'd say you're on to something. Conklin is going to be a good one for MSU, but I wouldn't use his ability to block Hoover as the measuring stick.
And if the good Lord’s willin’,

refillin’ and flyin’ high

He's also very crafty and scrappy. A real tactician.
