Substitute host on DP show so caught a little of Colin yesterday. Segment on how the Big Ten's over-rated, "deep doesn't mean good", and then 'guaranteed' that everyone except Indiana will be gone by the end of the 3rd round.
I know, just an egotistical obnoxious radio guy doing his thing, stirring the pot. But then I started thinking about who else I would put into the Elite Eight besides us and IU and couldn't really come up with anybody:
- SCum's lack of inside game has been exposed and the freshmen wilt in big games. They'll shoot themselves out of it within the first 3 rounds.
- Minnesota's faltering badly and other than their victory over us at home they can't seem to finish.
- Wisconsin - Bo. 'Nuff said.
- Illinois - Some great wins, but don't seem them as good enough to put together a run.
- OSU - This would seem to be the best hope outside of us and IU, but still nothing on offense besides Thomas and Matta's their coach.
I would like to see 3 B1G teams in the Elite Eight just to cap off a great year for the conference and prove the doubters wrong, but hate to admit that Cowherd might be right on this one except for us.
Cowhead might be the least knowledgeable talking head that ESPN has, and that is saying a lot, I don't care what he thinks.
As far as "exposing" B1G teams, so far it's taken B1G teams to expose ourselves, when it comes to the tourney we will be facing worse competition, less defense, less physical play. Plenty of B1G teams could get far.

Cowherd does his homework by reading articles and watching Sportscenter. The guy rarely watches actual games.
hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.
Look at what the B10 did outside the B10 before conf season started before you make that list.
scum to me is the biggest question mark, they are a match-up team, all about their bracket. A team with big front court and at least 1 athletic wing can give them fits, but any team that runs or isn't strong defensively is in trouble.
The flaw in his theory is that you still have to fill the Elite 8 up with 7 more teams, and the rest of the country sucks this season. Florida? Kansas? Duke? Syracuse? They're all just as flawed as the top B10 teams.
Good point guard play in the Tourney is huge.... Burke is one of the elite, i think uofm gets to the elite 8 this year as much as i hate to say it.
I was listening to Cowherd as well when he started his rant on this.
He didn't provide much in details to back his assertion, but I think you pretty much hit the major reasons why he might be right.
It wouldn't surprise me to see UofM in the E8, especially if they get a good draw or there are some early round upsets of the better teams in their bracket. But I would be shocked to see them get beyond that.
I agree with everything you just said. And believe me, I do not want to be in a position of defending Cowherd. Used to like him but not anymore.
But the film is out there of B1G teams 'exposing themselves' and so now the other coaches will at least have the blueprint to work from. Granted, having a game plan and being able to execute it are two different things, but still.
And my point is more about the individual teams than the B1G as a whole. To put the question another way, if you had to bet $50 on someone other than us or IU making the Elite Eight, who would you put it on? And how comfortable would you be with that bet?
I don't have to put money on a specific team, just a team outside of IU making it to the elite 8 from the B1G, I'd put 100 on it and be very confident, but I am not a better.
There's a reason why people like Cowherd don't say anything specific, don't address what would keep MSU out, what would keep IU in, what other teams would jump B1G teams and why. He says something like only IU will make the Elite 8 thinking he is being safe because there's all these other teams that could make it and he's not committing to any of them. He think's he's being safe, but he's so clueless that he doesn't even realize he just made the most idiotic statement because at least 5 B1G have what they need to make a run to the Elite 8. IU, MSU, UM, Minny and OSU. I don't need all of those teams to go to be right, but betting that all of the B1G best teams minus IU don't go anywhere, that's idiotic. That's like betting that the SEC will win the NCG, but lose every other one of their bowlgames, not a bet I'd make.
I definitely think the conference looks different now than it did in early January, and not in a good way. Minnesota looks bad, I don't think they are E8 material. I don't think Illinois has the chops to do it either. Wisconsin has been pretty disappointing lately in the tournament.
IU, MSU, OSU, and UM are the ones that I think have a reasonable shot. I'd be more surprised if only one made it than I would be if 3 did. UM is probably going to get a 2 seed, and they're not likely going to face a tough front line until they face someone in a regional final. OSU is probably least likely out of the bunch, but they play good enough defense and have an elite scorer. I think it would be a pretty big disappointment for both IU and us if we didn't get to a regional final. And right now it's Final Four or bust for IU, and getting close to that for us.
Well that's just, like, his opinion, man.
It had been a wonderful evening and what I needed now, to give it the perfect ending, was a little of the Ludwig Van.
I never take anything Colin says very seriously. He also has stated numerous times he doesn't like college basketball and won't watch it until March...
He likes to throw these unbacked theories out there to stir people up... He never backs up his logic with stats and details to make them reasonable enough to even consider.... just his straight opinion... which is fine it's his show.
But don't get your pants in a knot over it... It isn't coming from Bilas, Katz, Dakich, Digger, Knight, Vitale, or anyone else with a lick of basketball knowledge.
1. Use national platform to say something outlandish and opposite of what everyone else is saying.
2. People get all riled up. "No one can be that crazy!" they'll say.
3. People talk about the crazy ass thing you said.
4. People tune in to either hear you sound like an idiot, or hear your brilliant defense of your crazy statement.
Cowherd hates on the midwest all the time. Sometimes he has some smart stuff to sa, but other times he is a complete idiot.
I would be very confident betting the over on 2.5 B1G teams in the Elite 8.
My Elite Eight based on bracketology: http://espn.go.com/ncb/bracketology
I hate to say it but I think Wisconsin gets it done this year and makes a run in the tournament. I doubt Ohio State gets anywhere this year and I think Michigan makes it to the sweet 16 but gets knocked out by Kansas. Things can change as there are still 4 games left to be played plus Big Ten Tournament.
So I think 3 Big Ten teams make the elite eight with MSU and Indiana advancing to the Final Four.

This this this.
As another posted said he is just trying to stir the pot
The nice thing about making bold tournament predictions is it's totally unpredictable and it's tough to blame anyone for being wrong. Buzz generated, Mission Accomplished.
Cowherd's schtick is populist anti-theory. When he's not busy self promoting, talking about his personal life, how he left his wife to marry his not so hot friend Anne, or failing to develop his retarded web portal idea he pumped the tires on for a year before realizing BoDog was pretty much the same thing, he's dogging the big ten. 3 B1G in the Elite 8 with two in the FF.
What a 'tard. Look back at the rankings before conference play began. The B1G had four teams in the top 10, and another two sitting not far outside it. Teams like Illinois and Minnesota, and to a lesser extent OSU, only started falling back when other B1G teams starting beating on them.
Teams like MSU and Indiana are well-suited to a deep run this year. Both teams are capable of scoring AND playing outstanding defense, so we're capable of winning any matchup. Cowherd will no doubt be proved wrong.
tRCMB - Visit at your own risk of being disgusted.
Yeah. It's a slow time for sports. The weak minded sportscasters will make a dumb-ass prediction against the top BBall conference and watch the drama unfold.
IU and MSU are easy to predict to the elite 8. 90% and 80% chance respectively.
Wisconsin's tournament woes are overblown, esp. since we don't like them much. since 2000 they have made the sweet sixteen 6 times, advancing to the elite 8 twice, FF once. So predicting they make the sweet sixteen again isn't a stretch. Depends on who they draw. I give them a 30% chance.
Same with UM, Depends on the draw. Not many teams have the bigs like Payne,Nix,Costello, Dawson to completely shut them down. If Hardaway is hot, Burke plays like he's capable of, they can be dangerous.Easy to see them in the sweet sixteen with good backcourt play, which I think is likely. I give them a 30% chance too.
OSU I give about 20%, Ill and Minny about 10%. All about the matchups, higher seeds who slip early, etc. These teams have been playing tournament level competition since at least January.
2 teams likely, 3 teams more likely.
Especially when several teams that are usually almost automatic berth takers aren't even the discussion this year.
Can you really look at teams like Gonzaga, Butler and even Miami and say they are great bets for the 8.
