First of all, you asked the question: "But, how do "the results speak for themselves"?
Everyone wanted Izzo assistants...his coaching tree speaks for itself. There was all sorts of attrition on his bench. Montgomery and Stephens were brought in at the beginning of our lean years, which are great seasons to a lesser program.
I have no beef with either coach...in fact I really like DJ. I was just answering your question and helping the OP make his point that we have a gem in Dane Fife.
Bill Guthridge coached 3 years at UNC and took them to 2 Final Fours. Matt Doherty took over from Guthridge after coaching at ND for only 1 year and was 8-20 by his 2nd year at UNC. Brad Daugherty is now a NASCAR commentator.
Since joinging Div. 1 in 2001, previous coach to Fife was 21-88 over 4 years. Fife was 82-97 (43-39 in conference) over 6 years. Coach who replaced Fife was 11-19 last year.
IPFW - 32-107 without Fife as coach, 82-97 with Fife as coach.
So is 82-97 excellent then?
Fife's a good coach though no doubt.
At IPFW, yes, it is excellent.
Izzo has spent his lifetime building this program. He's likely to decide his successor. He's not going to do that based on friendship or loyalty, but who he thinks can best continue to grow/maintain his life's work.
Its just pure guesswork as to who he thinks is capable of that task.
I think it's silly to go back 10 years and place blame on specific BASKETBALL assistant coaches, then say what a great job Fife is doing, and then try to make a correlation with the FOOTBALL OC search.
But, that's just me.
You just mixed up Matt and Brad.
hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.
Haha. Thank you for taking the time to respond to one of GRR's rambling, know-it-all, factually incorrect posts.
No, he didn't.
No, it still makes no sense. Neither has any experience as a coach, nor does either seem to have any interest. Also, Mateen does not have a degree, which has consistently been a requirement for college coaching jobs.
The traditional path for coaching is leaving a college program and becoming a GA, video coordinator, or DOBO. MSU has many more former managers in these positions than former players.
Guthridge did take them to 2 Final Fours and UNC faithful didn't like the 14 losses in his last season even with the Final Four appearance. They also didn't like the recruiting. Old coach whispers.
Guthridge retired, UNC tried to get Cryin' Roy but he stayed put in Lawrence. He did support Matt Dohetry (Long Island native/former UNC player) not Brad Dougherty (North Carolina native/former UNC player)
Did you note that Matt Doherty also went 26-7 then 8-20 and finally 19-16 with a team that had a lot of Guthridge recruits?
I spelled Doherty and used the wrong first name. Doherty was the man at ND after one season but left for UNC. Got his ass kicked with many of Guthridge's recruits.
Matt Doherty was shown the door after 3 seasons Cryin' Roy agreed to come back. Cryin' Roy was smart enough to know that he even didn't want to be the guy who replaced the guy who replaced a legend.
I think Roy also had Collison and Hinrich at the time with a good shot at the title.
Fife did well there in turning around a program (gotta love a team called the Mastodons!). Credit Izzo as well for his loyalty/belief in Dane by putting them on MSU's schedule. One might think he had/has a plan for the future.
Doherty's record at UNC had nothing to do with the talent. The guy isn't a good coach. In soon to be 12 seasons as a head coach, his teams have had a winning conference record twice. Once at UNC and in his only season at FAU. Hell, he has never even sniffed the NCAA tournament except for his first year at UNC when he lost in the 2nd round to Penn State.
I had customers in South Bend when Doherty did his one and done at ND. Boosters were buying billboards and newspaper half/full page ads pleading with him to stay. ND students acted like MSU students when Izzo was thinking about the Cavalier's job. He was a high profile 35 year old replacing 62 year old John MacLeod.
Next MSU basketball coach is going to have to have rough ride with a fan base that has gotten used to NCAA tournament appearances and regular trips to the Sweet 16. Same for Duke when Krzyzewski retires. Crean is the 3rd guy in 8 years at IU and he's the first to be embraced by the IU faithful.

Doherty was basically laughed at by the entire coaching fraternity for his incompetence. Was a world class douche besides. I remember Johnny Dawkins refusing to shake his hand before a Duke/UNC game.
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
Stephens is the #1 assistant on the team and is Izzo's right hand man. Fife struggled last year, but now he is starting to fall in line and get acclimated to his role...he is coming into his own.
It makes me laugh when you see uneducated statements being made like the ones that the OP made...it's not Izzo and Fife at the helm. It's Izzo at the helm. It's his ship. Fife is a good coach, but Stephens is the #1 assistant and, by far, the best assistant coach in the program.
It's laughable. At points this board has pinpointed Cleaves, Neitzel, Antonio Smith as potential coaches. Oh, and why in the HELL can't we get Respert on the bench, too?
So we can have a staff with Fife in charge, assisted by Cleaves, Antonio, Respert and Neitzel. And the cool thing is they can go to the Roadhouse and hang out with Drew Stanton, Aric Morris, Greg Jones, Max Bullough and the rest of the football assistants.
You're worse than Bill O'Reilly.
Seriously? It's IPFW. Yes, I'd call that excellent. Also coached them to an 18-12 record in his last year (program best for wins). In fact, all of his years at IPFW posted program best as far as wins since joining Div. I.
Fife was looked at by Painter, Creen, Beilein, and Izzo before taking the MSU assistant job.
Yeah, sure it wasn't a winning record, no final fours, etc., but it's IPFW, a team that just joined Div. I prior to him getting there. Not sure many coaches out there could have done better considering the circumstances.

A lot of people talking out of their ass in this thread. You guys realize Stephens is the top assistant, right?
