Thought I'd pass this along considering it's been such a hot topic around here all season. Dantonio was asked today about DeAnthony Arnett's progress and certainly had some interesting things to say. Among them, the fact that he regrets Arnett not taking a redshirt this season. Not sure how well that would have gone over at the start of the season considering the lack of returning talent at receiver was likely a big reason Arnett decided to come home and all he went through to be granted the hardship wavier. But, in retrospect, it definitely would have been in both parties' best interest to do so.
Here's his response in its entirety:
"DeAnthony is a guy that needs to continue to grow in our program," Dantonio said. "I think it's unfortunate that we didn't redshirt him because we had such high hopes and expectations for him at the beginning of the season. The reality is, how many guys can you play? That's the reality. Needs to be a little more consistent in terms of knowing what to do, play a little bit better at the point of attack in terms of blocking, catch the ball a little bit more consistently down the field. But he has big play ability and he has a great future here. With that being said, the positive of the whole redshirting, non-redshirting thing is if you're being redshirted usually you're on the scout team and you're not getting the coaching that you're getting day-to-day. So he has received that, he's traveling every game, but the number of plays that he's got in game time really hasn't come to fruition, I guess, from all parties involved. I'm sure he's a little disappointed in that. I'm a little disappointed in that as well. At the end of the day, you ask where his attitude is and where his effort is and it's very, very good and I think he's gonna be a great player for us here. But people have to grow in every venue and every environment they're in and he's gotta do that as well. You just have to asses people and say, 'Who's playing the best right now,' and try to go with those guys consistently."
Interesting stuff, especially in regards to Arnett's development. Matches what I've heard regarding the fact that he simply wasn't ready to contribute this season for a variety of reasons. Dantonio noted understanding of the playbook, blocking and catching as three areas he needs to improve. Pretty much needs to get better in all phases this offseason.

So why can't he play KR/PR?
hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.
tRCMB - Visit at your own risk of being disgusted.
I tend to wad left, but to each his own.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
Maybe he has had issues fumbling in practice? The staff goes with hands first.
Probably the whole "catching" concern? That's much more of an issue at PR though.
great time to be thinking about this, 10 games into the season.
I think we should take some of these people, and send 'em up to Bear Mountain for a picnic.
Great info, Dan. Glad to hear him go out of his way to say the effort and attitude are there. I buy it.

Thanks for the article.
Arnett's fine. He's gonna be here for two more years and I think he will most certainly contribute. Next year he should be right in the mix for the rotation again and you do have Fowler leaving after 2013 so hopefully Arnett can contribute a lot more regularly then.
Just gotta keep working. Just because a guy is ahead of you doesn't mean you can't take his spot. Ask Taiwan Jones, Kurtis Drummond and Micajah Reynolds. Good things happen when you work hard.
So Dantonio is basically saying they're too deep at Receiver? There has to have been a way to get him on the field. Here's an idea: Quit playing the Poo-poo platter of Fowler
And I don't buy that the guy can't catch, he played WR in the SEC.
For or better or worse, they are the best we have.
How werd you right?
KIngs and Arnett NOT being redshirted this year is a mistake....possibly a panic move because Fowler and Lippett started so awfully
Couldn't he get a retro active red shirt? I know Michigan is trying to get Gardner a RS for the 2010 season, and it seems like Arnett has played less this year than Gardner did in '10.
The stand by " he played in the SEC" defense. Solid.
Yes, but it played out in the worst possible way: The 2 guys who took well over a month to start catching the ball end up the starters, and the 2 guys who's redshirts you burned got hardly any reps for burning a year of eligibility. The fact that neither Arnett and Kings redshirted makes it that much worse...at least 1 of them should have, because now we have the exact same situation next year.
This is the biggest Charlie Foxtrot since the Cousins/Nichol QB battle that dragged on forever.
I guess this is proof that Dantonio doesn't read this board. Everyone, and I mean everyone was worried about this very situation about 6 or 7 weeks ago.

Yep. Same reason Ellsworth is returning kicks. Hands.
Your best post ever
How long till we get Arnett's official response via Twitter?

Didn't you say he should play more?
Man, I SWEAR I've seen this question before...
No, because he played at least against Iowa (game #7). Can't play that late in the year and get a RS.
No. Blanch said he wasn't playing because the Coaches didn't want to look foolish if Arnet did well. You know, for not playing him sooner. Pretty solid logic, right?
He played for freaking UT.
