Are you an ND fan?
I was wondering this as well. I am really not sure how you have a romantic relationship with someone you have never met.
I also wonder how you ever have another relationship with another person. All of the United States now knows that you were in a relationship with someone who was not real. A) who wants to date a liar or B) who wants to date a gullible idiot. I don't care how much money you make in the NFL, how do you overcome that???
I'd be interested to hear how much contact there was between the two parties before the period they were dating.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who will pound his poi if he's making millions of dollars. Hell, for the right money...
Because the amount of attention that he was getting/going to get would have outed him anyway. If you fake a death, who is going to investigate two deaths happening to someone within hours of eachother (Obviously not the media hacks that we are stuck with today)? It took someone in the know e-mailing deadspin for any of this to be found out. And I'm guessing that they timed it the way they did because of the Grandmother's death. Anytime he said he was still in mourning/sad because of it was true, it's just that he was actually upset about his Grandma. They just miscalculated the way the story would be covered.
The story of his grandma and girlfriend dying within days/hours of each other landed him on the cover of SI, and the topic of heisman talk almost instantly.
Coach Kelly gave him the gameball after MSU to give to his dead girlfriend.
It made him a star. It played well with the media.
No one would give a shit if they broke up. Plus, that's messy because she's still around and it's possible that daddy or someone else might want to call her and talk some sense into her.
A rich gullible idiot? Yeah, no woman would ever do that.
That's definitely possible, but just seems unlikely. A fake breakup is far easier to pull off than a fake death. When you break up with your fake long distance girlfriend that's pretty much the end of it, even if you're a star football player at Notre Dame. If you say she died -- and if we're following the gay cover up angle, Heisman attention wasn't a motivating factor -- you have to know that it's going to become a huge story and you're going to have to talk about her in every single media interview for the rest of the season.
What's riskier? That your dad in Hawaii might try to contact your ex-girlfriend in Palo Alto (who he never met) while you're playing football in South Bend? Or that you'll have to give convincing televised interviews and pep rally speeches after you invent your fake girlfriend's death on the same night or your grandma's real death?

Except we hear from sources this morning out of South Bend - looking for the article, anybody have it? - that he wasn't uninterested in girls at ND.
A lot of people have been sold a lie. You my friend, have bought the lie.
The indoctrinated will no longer be able to deny it, only defend it.

There is no "likely" scenario here. The alternative (that strangers pulled off a multi-year hoax and fake killed his fake girlfriend) is far less likely in my mind.
As I've said, maybe he wanted the sympathy. Maybe he knew that all his personal tragedy would make him the star darling of ND.
Do you think ND contracted gHost to write the cover story?
How can it be messy if she wasn't real in the first place?
We also heard from "sources out of South Bend" that he had a girlfriend who died.
And, dating or showing interest in girls does not make one a heterosexual. Closeted gay guys pretend to be straight all the time.
SIAP - hard to keep up with this thread.
One of his teammates claims everyone knew it was a scam and that Manti was a "very good actor." Yikes.
The big question is: What did he know and when did he know it? We may never get a straight answer from Tes teammates had suspicions about Lennay Kekau going back to the beginning of this season.
If she's dead, no one is going to try and contact her.
It's not crazy to think that the media asking Te'o about his girlfriend freaked him out about the possibility of someone trying to contact her and discovering his lie.
Bingo. I think he panicked when he realized this thing was starting to snowball and decided to "kill" her off. He now gets the sympathy card and can make people come across as insensitive if they ask questions that are too personal.
But if he was only trying to fend off gay rumors, he doesn't need sympathy. He needs a beard. Sympathy only comes in if it was the publicity stunt angle.
Thank you, Denicos.
Gotcha. Ironically, killing her off gave the media two more documents to look for: an obituary and a death certificate!
Because at some point, someone's going to attempt to talk to the living ex-gf. What better way to cover the tracks than have her be a fake?
I guess I have too much self-respect, and faith in women...
