Thats beautiful. Early nominee for post of the year!!
If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day.
Turns out ESPN had the story well before Deadspin but sat on it while trying to get an interview with Manti:
While some inside the network were pushing to publish an article about the girlfriend hoax and others were pushing back, another outlet broke the story.
Sure they did....They just had the info and were ready to run the story the day Deadspin ran it and held off? Yeah right. They got scooped by a site they hate and are trying to cover their asses. ESPN is a fucking joke when it comes to "news" and they know it. Yahoo and Deadspin have been breaking sports news better, faster, and more frequently than ESPN has for years.
35,600 posts and counting since 09-09-2002. tRCMB Dead Pool Commissioner.
I'm eagerly waiting for just one reporter to publicly address this. The first time I hear "but wait, didn't you say...." I am going to do a freaking back flip out of excitement.
Correct. ESPECIALLY, if not exclusively, in stories where at least one of the subjects is a party to a broadcasting contract with ESPN. For the most part I think the NFL Network and tBTN have done more thorough jobs covering some of the more embarrassing stories that their own athletes and coaches have been involved in.
"The girl I committed myself to" Yeah, the one who was supposedly dying of cancer and you couldn't find the time to see her just once? Who was supposedly in a coma after a car accident and you couldn't find the time to do a single face to face visit. Dude, just stop talking, the story was about to die into the background and now you bring it up. He is a total fucking pathalogical liar, I know someone like this, and you can't even try to confront them with the things they say that don't add up. They just roll onto the next piece of b.s. hoping you either get tired of them or believe it.
Of the teases shown of the interview Teo's body language was terrible. It felt awkward just watching it.
Sort of. They got scooped because they're a TV network and they were trying to find someone to talk on camera. Obviously, it's a much, much bigger ratings hit if they run the story with T'eo.
Don't think -- it can only hurt the ballclub
They have hundreds of "on air reporters" that they could have used from offices all over the US(including Chicago which is the ND market). If they weren't 100% confident on the story they could have given it to some scrub that they don't care about and if the story falls apart his career is over and ESPN goes scott free.
PS LOL it only took ESPN a week to come up with a cover story that they had the story in hand...Yeah right.
Sorry if this has already been answered:
Did Te'o actually talk to a girl on the phone for "hours on end" as he has said?
If so, who is this girl? Didn't Roniah Touiasapsopso (or whatever his name is) already admit that he was fucking with Te'o? So... who was the girl that Te'o actually talked to on the phone?
You guys continue to mistake Manti Te'o for the Edward Norton character in Primal Fear.
I firmly believe there's still something bigger in the background of this story. There has to have been incentive for Teo to 1) believe in a fake girl and 2) continue to perpetuate the lie after he learned the truth. That it supposedly aided his Heisman campaign is a red herring. Similarly, there has to have been incentive for Tuiososopo to pretend to be a girl for three years. No one does something like that for shits and giggles for three years.
Something else to consider is why the "relationship" was carried out via Twitter. That seems to prove the need for a public audience to serve as witness. Any other couple, virtual or otherwise, sends emails, skypes, etc. They don't have conversations on Twitter.
Again, the question becomes "what was either party's incentive to go along with the charade?"
Was it the gay thing?
Was Teo sharing inside info on ND with Tiuososopo for gambling purposes?
Was it a front for robbing people that thought they were donating money to cancer research?
Maybe none of hear are plausible at face value, but they are more realistic than an all American football player having a three year relationship with a fake girl, and more realistic than a guy pretending to be the football players girlfriend for three years with no endgame in mind.
I hope this story isn't sloughed off as nothing this quickly. There's something else going on here.
ESPN doesn't cover news anymore, why change now? Everything they have "broken" has been "according to sources" for at least 2 years now. They are a hack organization who are trying to cover their ass.
"Dear Manti, you're a lying sack of shit. When do you want to go on camera and talk to us about it?"
The incentive for Te'o perpetuate the lie is pretty simple: Hope you don't get caught so that you can avoid humiliation and avoid becoming a gigantic distraction for a team in the midst of an undefeated season. Also, though Te'o and "Lennay" "knew" each other for three years or so, the exclusive romantic relationship was less than a year, and the all night phone calls lasted about 4 months (according to unreliable sources, obviously).
The incentive for Tuiososopo? It sounds like he could be a serial catfisher, as it's well known that Te'o wasn't his only target. Maybe he's in the closet, and having online relationships with football players -- he's from a football family -- is the best way for him to be "himself?"
But that doesn't explain how he managed to get two other parties involved on his end of the Te'o hoax.
having an affair with a booster/booster's wife...he was able to communicate with the alias she created. the Tui guy was helping him carry on this affair.
He was outed by the husband soon after the grandmother died and the university told Teo that the affair had to be over and that she had to be dead to him. Bamo...he takes the death of the mistress to the next level.
Someone other than Tuiososopo talked to Te'o on the phone daily, often for hours at a time, for FOUR MONTHS.
I don't have a problem with the idea that someone fucked with Te'o online for months on-end. But the idea that there was a months long verbal/phone relationship between Te'o and someone other than serial catfisher Tuiososopo is hard for me to believe. Assuming there actually was a woman he talked to on the phone, at what point does it go from a "fake" relationship to a real one? I mean... four months of late-night phone calls? Why?
Also, who is this person that he talked on the phone to? Why hasn't this come out yet?
I have no clue as to why another two people (if they exist) would be involved. Obviously money would be the first thought, but there's been no evidence of extortion.
Wanna know how this ends? Te'o eventually reconciles with the woman he talked to on the phone every night, but only after she tearfully confesses, "I never thought I'd fall in love with you!" with 15 minutes left in the movie.
Even if I believed Manti, it would become hard for me to even feel bad for the poor son of a bitch.
Some of my Spartan artwork and Keebdaddy!
I believe there is something bigger too. He's not the biggest name in athletics. Not even college athletics.
Yet no one else has had anything remotely similar to this happen to them. Not ever. Something just isn't right with that and something isn't right with the fact that he was so committed and serious about her but never visited her no matter how many bad things happened.
The only thing that matters is NO ONE has been able to get a interview with Touiosopo. Why??? Hush $$$$$
edit: TMZ live just said that Touiosopo is seeing a therapist and they believe he will talk in about a week and there is a story that hasnt been told yet.

Or he just doesn't want to.
"Hi, Roniaha, this ESPN. We'd like you to come in for an interview and talk about what a fucking weirdo you are. When are you available?"
There was mention of a cousin of Tuiososopo that was the girl Te'o was talking to on the phone (I don't remember if they said it was every night for months or just a few times). It was mentioned in one of the 288 articles that have been linked (not sure which one).
ESPN has phone records?
