Fuck it, may as well sign Josh Hamilton. Who the hell cares anymore.
Now, commence with the "it will never happen" comments....
Sparty > Walverines
Would rather use that money to re sign Sanchez and grab Torri Hunter for two years.
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
Not sure what you want McClendon to do with guys like Delmon Young, Jhonny Peralta and Omar Infante, all of whom have played with other teams and have a history of not drawing walks. He's also got guys like Quinton Berry, Don Kelly, Ryan Raburn, etc who were clearly overmatched against major league pitching this season.
We are not the same, I am a Spartan
New coaches wont reform veterans. If you want players who take different approaches, you need to get new players. Young is gone. Raburn is gone. Boesch is likely gone. Kelly and Berry are possible returnees fighting for the 25th spot.
Exactly. These are professional ball players, a hitting coach can only do so much, especially for the veterans. Most of it is on the players. If you don't want a lineup full of free swingers, it's Dombrowski's job to acquire guys with a history of working counts.
Even guys like Dirks, Boesch, Avila, Garcia, etc that have grown up in the Tigers system, McClendon's involvement in their development has been pretty minimal since most of the development and shaping of a hitter's approach happens earlier in their career. That's going to take place in A and AA so the hitting coaches at those levels will have more affect on their approach than McClendon.
IMO hitting coaches at the major league level are overrated.
Which free agent has the highest WAR? Let's sign him. That's all that matters, right?
Fuck, i'm so angry right now. Two 2-0 games away from this being a real series. God fucking damn it you fucking fuckers. I wish i hadn't spent $275 to go to the game tonight. Fuck.
I don't think you get it. He's not a defensive substitute in RF. If he comes in the game, and Dirks in LF, he moves Dirks over to RF. DIrks is a subpar RF, but he's WAY BETTER THAN BERRY. Berry in RF statistically might be almost as bad as Delmon in LF. Yeah, he won't make errors, but good luck getting faster than Prince to not go 1st to 3rd.
So, I hate to talk offseason when we are still in the World Series, but I'm bored.
Needs: SS, LF/RF, Closer, #2 hitter
Obviously, we have no idea who is available on the trade market (Andrus?), so looking at the FAs.
SS: One question that I have ... can Infante play SS? If so, we could slide him to SS and that increases the FA options. If Drew isn't available (and it seems like he won't be now after the A's traded Pennington), Jhonny and Maicer Izturis are the only thing that even interests me. With no one in the farm system close to ready, gotta look at the trade market and I'd be calling Texas.
LF/RF: I don't see them making a big splash here as we have a couple of guys (Garcia and Castellanos) that may be able to help along with Dirks (who, I think may be a decent #2 hitter). Q needs to go run track somewhere and not be on a baseball field - it was nice that the Tigers FINALLY got a AAA player that is called up and performs WAY over his head for a couple of months, but the failure to recognize that fact is one of the things killing the team in the postseason. Torii Hunter, BJ Upton, and Ichiro would be interesting as would Cody Ross and, gulp, Angel Pagan. Torii, Ichiro, Pagan and maybe even Upton would be decent #2 hitters.
Closer: There are a decent amount of them on the market. Get the best deal. Someone will end up signing a decent one/two year deal to be "the man".
Fielder needs to lose 25 pounds and work on his hitting. He also needs to work on his decorum - smiling and laughing in the dugout after he hits like shit, into double plays? It is his job - and he is paid outrageously for it - to move runners and score them.
Verlander needs to put his ego on the shelf when he knows a guy crushes fastballs. Go to his other pitches instead of thinking he can blow the fastball past them.
Valverde needs to go.
Work on fielding at 2nd base.
He hit .313 with 30 HRs.
Fielder hasn't weighed himself since high school so good luck with that. Especially when you consider he has a long streak of games and hasn't been out due to an injury in 3 or 4 years.
Bulldog is right.
You don't say anything to a player who batted .313 / 30 HRS /108 RBI's and played in all 162 games.
If that's all of what needs fixing this team would have won more than 88 games in the regular season.

Fielder, if anything, is a better overall hitter this year because he's learned to take the ball to left field when that's all opponents give him.
This is the first year he's ever hit .300. He strikes out quite a bit, but that's going to happen in his case with his swing.
Teams have gone away from the shift against him as the year has progressed.
People always yell about his weight. Well, when he doesn't hit, anyway. He's not going to lose 25 pounds.
Yeah with the few known needs on this club it's probably makes sense to focus on your two best and known commodities.
Castellanos is nowhere close to being ready. He struggled the last 2 months in Erie, and he's hitting .220 in the AFL. Tigers really need to sign 1 corner OF. I think Garcia spends the whole year in Erie/Toledo, no point in him platooning up in the big club. Garcia and Castellanos are really 2 years away from contributing, that's why a guy like Hunter or Ichiro would be a solid fit.
People that talk weight and baseball don't know how much that weight affects a swing and the power it produces. 25 less pounds will not help Fielder do anything but hit a couple extra doubles...and thats not his game.
Cabrera lost weight in offseason and hit 14 more homers this year, and 8 less doubles

You're right...Fielder hitting behind him had no affect that.
We had a guy hitting behind him last year that batted .330 with over 100 RBI's.
Cabrera hits the ball so damn hard all year he is 40 homers waiting to happen. Thought it was interesting that in September he was pulling homers to left. Most of the summer he was just drilling balls into the death valley that is Copa's right center.

Don't let Berry bat ever again
What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...
I don't mind Berry batting to start an inning or with no one on. It's not like we don't have a bunch of other guys who give away AB's.
But he's the last guy on the team I want up with the bases loaded.
He's a double play waiting to happen.
They will offer Young Arbitration. They need him for one more year. He might be bad in LF, but if he gets regular starts there he won't be so bad. The young righties are not ready for a full MLB season and we have enough left handed hitters in the OF. They should pick up the option on Peralta too, but should try to move him. I like Ryan of the Mariners. He runs well, has outstanding range, makes very few errors. He hits around .200, but in Detroit maybe he can creep up to .230. This will free up some money to bring back Sanchez. They also need to sign a left handed Relief pitcher. Forget about signing a closer. Just bring Dotel back and they will have 5 guys to choose from. Plus Rincon in AAA.
Jackson CF Verlander Big AL
Dirks RF/Infante Max Coke
Miggy 3B Fister Benoit
Prince 1B Sanchez Dotel Bring him back too
Vmart DH Smyly or Porcello Porcello or Smyly
Young LF Villarreal
Infante 2B/Dirks RF Best lefty specialist
Bench-Berry,Worth,Laird (bring him back) (Kelly or Rayburn)
He has hit into 4 in 330 AB's.
Delmon and Jhonny hit into 40.
Delmon is an unrestricted FA.
@MSUPureblood: That pretty much sucks. Do not want.
