I agree. Running QB's are nothing new.
Roger Staubach had lots of success doing it in the 60s, and I'm sure before the forward pass there were lots of other great running QBs.
Dantonio has described our offense as mixed with elements of pro set and spread.
I think it would help to focus on one or the other and I'd favor pro. Recruiting might be easier if we focus on one or the other too.
On the other hand unbalanced offenses can get you through a game or two. We could never have gotten to 11 wins in either of the last two seasons without putting the ball in Cousins' hands nearly every play.

I agree, Vim.
I believe that we need to find an offensive coordinator that knows how to run this type of offense and is proven. To use a restaurant analogy, we need a chef that specializes in this genre of food. Roushar is more of a country buffet style chef...he can get things out there that are internationally and multi-culturally flavored, but the dishes do not have any authenticity. The pizza is pizza, but it is not good pizza. The fried rice is fried rice, but it is not real chinese fried rice.
We need to bring in a coach that is proven in the style of play that coach D wants to run and Hollis needs to open the checkbook like he did with Narduzzi.
I like that MSU is a bastion of the pro-style set. I don't think it's the system. If we keep roushar and go to a spread, it's not going to make a hell of a lot of difference, he'd just be making the wrong calls in a different system. It's not the system, it's the cretin running it.
I'm sure Dantonio would like to play smash-mouth, but we've been unable to develop an OL to do it. Treadwell understood that we had to pass to set up the run, and have an equal mix. The "funny" thing right now is, no matter what we do on first down, we ALWAYS run right into the line on second.

MD is cagey. Regarding the offense:
"We need to change... which will happen"
To me, that means - well... change the OC.
Remember when we were having trouble in the red zone Cousins' first year? We used to throw that TE-release play constantly. Now we have one of the best TE's in the country, a guy that's basically uncoverable, and we never try it. It drives me crazy, and I really can't believe NOBODY in the Skandalaris Center seems to be saying, "Hey, we should throw to Sims in the end zone."
Well maybe if he'd been bad or something.
It certainly wouldn't be a "surprise" party. Everyone would know about it in advance...especially those not invited who would just barge right in and crash it!
"I love March!" - Tom Izzo
"Daddy, the guy with the clown nose gave me a cap gun and told me to keep shooting myself in the foot. This party sucks!"
Since light travels faster than sound, people appear bright until you hear them speak.
The Barrent, Klatt, Treadwell, Conway and Burkland injuries have made OL recruiting look worse than it has been. Not to mention the line's leader in Jackson being out as well as Fonoti who is prob the emotional leader.
"Daddy, why are we waiting to mail invitations the day before the party?
It's called the 2 minute offense son, they won't be expecting it"
"Daddy, why are you trying to jam the invitations into a closed mailbox?"
"I thought I saw an opening."
Dantonio needs to go visit the Stanford coaches this offseason and get some advice. Then fire Danny Roushar
"You make sure when you come, you got a little blood in your eye, a little blood in your eye, a little fire in your belly. We there yet?"
Roushar couldn't even score with a hooker.
Seriously though I understand throwing in some short, high percentage passes to make Maxwell and the receivers feel all warm and fuzzy inside about actually completing a pass, but at the same time a lot of the plays are just uncreative. Plain and simple.
Every night before I go to bed I say a little prayer that Roushar will be fired when I wake up in the morning.
I'll believe Roushar is getting fired when I see it. Until then, I fully expect him back and for Coach D to say that is quote was referencing some minor tweaks they want to make in the offense.
This post got me to thinkin... Question to all the MD experts: Has he ever fired anyone? And I mean ANYONE - even the water boy. While at MSU or Cinncinati?
Don't think so, but hoping there's always a first time.
Barrent - injury
Conway - injury
Klatt - injury
I wouldn't say running QBs necessarily win more NCs than pro-style ones.
We're going to run into the pile of humanity on the left side of our line instead of the right.
going live with the qb's in spring ball is a pretty big 'tweak', could be interesting.
One thing I'd like to know: why doesn't our offense get any better by going against our defense in practice? I mean, aren't our practice scrimmages tougher than what they'll see in the game? Isn't competition supposed to make you better?
I actually think the kind of offense we run fits, it's just the way Roushar runs it that sucks.
Get a good coordinator running that offense and it will work just fine.
Can we please stop with the threads that relate to firing Roushar? The guys in charge do not read this board, and you're all starting to sound like whiney bitches. No amount of posts is going to affect the OC job situation.
It was okay at first; I get that we were ranting and needed something to funnel our frustrations into, but at this point it's just damn annoying seeing "OC candidate" threads everywhere.
