Went to a Sprint store this evening to upgrade my son's phone as a gift. Planned on wrapping the iPhone, giving it to him on Christmas, and going back to the store a day or two after to activate it.
Guy at the Sprint store said they had to activate the phone immediately...meaning the phone my kid has would go dead immediately.
I don't get it. Do Verizon and ATT do the same thing? Best Buy?
Yeah because the phone is cheapER because you sign a contract for service. If you just buy the phone and leave with it, what if you don't come back ?
Nope. I work at Verizon and we sell many 'activate later' devices that we don't take out of the packaging.
Primary contract with my Sprint plan...they know where to get hold of me. Guy at the store didn't even offer the option of buying the phone full price and getting reimbursed later.
Are they upgrades or only new plans?
Didn't the phone come at a lower price ? Usually when you get a new phone they make you sign a new contract. My company has 7 phones on our contract and if we add or replace a phone we have to sign a new agreement. That is annoying that there is no way to do that considering you are trying to buy it as a Christmas gift.

At my store, we do activate laters for both upgrades and new lines. If its a brand new account, then we try to activate on the spot, or read it on a case by case basis.
Unfortunately, there is a lot of fraud going on, new accounts purchasing iPhones, they never activate them, sell them for full price and let the account close due to non payment. Messes their credit up but they make some good money.
My recent experience with Sprint stores is that it is their goal, desire and directive to screw you over as hard as possible.
In theory couldn't you just order it online and wait to activate it when it gets to your house until Christmas day?
When I bought my new droid online from Verizon I activated it right away but really in theory you don't have to until you would want to I don't think.
I hate going in to the stores. Always a line and a pain in the ass. Seems like everything can be done online or over the phone. Especially if you have already picked out exactly what you want.
this. at least with Verizon it's a simple matter of calling a specific number and following the prompts and you can activate your phone yourself in a couple of minutes. so he could get it on xmas AND activate and play around with it that day. just order it on line.
Activate from home on Christmas morning after he opens it.
No idea if you can get an iPhone shipped by Christmas or not. When I bought one in early Nov, it took 4 weeks to ship.
Sprint really is the worst customer service. I think its because, at least at one time, they were by far the easiest to get a phone plan from when someone had bad credit. They built their customer base on people who don't have leverage, and so their customer service has never evolved.
Holy crap seriously? 4 weeks? Was it like the brand new model at the time?
You can get them in 2-3 days now.
I ordered it on Oct 10 and it didn't ship until Nov 2nd.
It sounds like the supply issues have been ironed out and you can get one in a few days now.
I had the same problem with Sprint, they wouldn't let me buy a phone and activate it on xmas day. They lost an iphone + 24 month contract to AT&T who were more than happy to do what I wanted to do!
Beat the Sprint guy to a bloody pulp, take a picture, then frame it and wrap the picture for your kid.
I bought an iPhone 5 from Sprint on Saturday December 1st as one of my lines was eligible for an upgrade. I was shocked as hell that it was delivered two days later on the 3rd and I only used the free shipping.
Not saying this would necessarily happen to you....
