On the way up the tunnel following the game, I asked Harris whether he is still committed to Michigan State.
"Oh, yeah," he said. "I'm solid."
But what if Alabama starts calling?
"They already are -- a lot," he said. "I'm solid."
For those of you who watched the Notre Dame football game Saturday night, you watched the wrong game. For those of you who left Ford Field to head back to Ishpeming or Portland -- or anywhere in the continental U.S. -- you should have stuck around. Every one of you missed the Next Big Thing: Drake Harris of Grand Rapids Christian.
My Whiskey Blog
I watched the entire game, and he looked amazing. He looked like Randy Moss out there. Made several great catches. However, I try to temper my excitement a bit. I keep reminding myself that this was Div 4, and these plays he was making was not against the top talent. I'm not doubting him at all, and can't wait until he's on the field/court wearing Green and White. I'm just sayin'...........
It's kids like this that can take your program to the next level. People asking "what if bama (can we call them NAMBLA...it's really close) comes knockin'" and he just closes it right off. Feels good to be picked over an elite program and can be a doorway to capturing an elite class in 2014.
It was Division 3 and OLSM played and beat both teams in the D1 championship game, also beat BRice and lost a close one to Muskegon from the D2 championship game so not like he was making those plays against a true D3 talent team. He is going to be a special player once he gets to EL, can't wait to see him both on the field and the court!
If he was committed to another school that plays in the Big Ten from the State of Michigan I highly doubt McCabe asks that set of questions as the kid goes up the tunnel.

It is ALWAYS a great day to be a Spartan!!!!
Oh of course he doesn't...and remember, verbal commitments are non-binding!!
The kid is going to be a star. He just needs to fill out a bit. He looked really skinny. But that's what you expect out of a high school junior.
I still can't believe he plays like that and still has one more year in high school. He's the best WR prospect to come out of Michigan since Charles Rogers...possibly even better.
Well, the issue is people feel he's more committed to basketball than football. As it becomes apparent football is his future (which Izzo himself pointed out) he might look around.
At least that's the hopeful theory down the road.
MSU isn't going to get the top kid in the state without people wondering why he isn't going to Meatchicken. It's practically an yearly phenomenon. :)
All right, I'm gonna say it - dick move by Saban to still be calling this kid after he has committed to us in football plus the fact that Izzo has been recruiting and talking with him for years in hoops. I thought Iz and Saban were still buds? Why doesn't someone in the local media follow up on this and ask Izzo (and Dantonio) what he thinks about Alabama still recruiting him. F that guy and f Alabama, even if they are the best team in the country.

This kid is going to help to pull in some serious talent in the 2014 class. I have a good feeling about this class, especially if we get Henderson on board early.
OLSM is one of the top teams in the state and I think they beat Cass Tech. Drake also had a big game against Moller which is literally full of College D-1 talent.
All they would/could say is that all's fair in love and war - I do agree that it is a dick move. I've read a couple places that Alabama has written a hundred of letters to kids (I think including Harris). If I was a player getting recruited, that would turn me off. Make your pitch and let me think about it. Don't waste my time with this other crap.

He's got a shot to be a 5 star recruit in Football, get used to it, he's going to get wooed by every major program in the Country. He's been an MSU fan though and outside of his relationship with MD, he has a great friendship with Tom Izzo, no one is going to pry this kid away from us.
Love the answer, hate the question.
Exactly. He's dreamed of playing for MSU his whole life. He'll get to be a star player on both the football and the basketball teams, and he'll be the big man on campus.
I saw him play basketball when he was 13 and he was already insane--kids his age had no shot at guarding him.
Drake Harris™ @dharrisbball4
Sticking to my word
Where is the McCabe article being critical of Shane Morris being so grossly overrated....like he did with Edwin Baker?
Is he gonna be on basketball or football schollie?
It was just a mistake;
I didn't mean to let them take away my soul.
Am I too old?
Is it too late?
Not only that this is not a kid who was getting MAC offers and then suddenly blew up and now he's getting all this attention. He's been a big time player for awhile. He had to have figured when he committed to MSU that he would still be hearing from "the big boys". Total non-story.
The rules dictate it will be a football scholarship since Football is played before basketball.
It's a good rule that keeps teams from giving half their football team track scholarships.
I like that quote
I have to imagine a player with his ability would be given the opportunity to play from day one, no?
Or would the coaches hold him back unnecessarily because he's a freshman?
He probably wouldn't be a starter on the football team from day 1, but he probably would be on the basketball team (I'm assuming that Dawson and Harris will be gone by then).
What's up with that?
And it's not limited to only the clowns on the Detroit media, one of very own recruiting "gurus" asked Pittman 100 times last year if he was still committed to MSU.
Bama has already been calling -- a lot huh? What happens when a duffel bag of money mysteriously ends up on his porch? It's a harder decision then.
Saban is doing what many others do and that's recruit a player that's committed but especially with Harris being a '14 recruit it's only going to get worse let's hope Harris does keep his word because it's a long time until Feb 2014 folks.
The real question- Is Saban going to give him the Tom Crean "I miss you a whole lot" text?
Now with a PhD in Applied Llama Physics...
