Fletch posts about basketball and not just bitching about bitching.
I'll take it but I hate it. Home court and the home crowd should be enough of an advantage. When the ref's are involved there's an element that this is more about entertainment (WWE) and less about sport. I think MSU would do better overall if all games were officiated equally regardless of venue.
The officiating in this conference is horrible. The B1G is the premiere conference this year and it's tarnished by the refs. I can't wait for Saturday's IU/UM game. I'll be rooting for IU and I fully expect them to get several calls in their favor. UM loves to draw the charge and right or wrong I bet most of them will be called blocking fouls. Forks up!?!?

There were plenty of bad calls to go around. It's kind of sad though that the fact the calls more or less evened out is seen as helping MSU. LOL.
My Whiskey Blog
Great post. You must have been at the game.
MSU fouls: 15
Illinois fouls: 26
MSU free throws: 34
Illinois free throws: 15
Seems like the only way to see those numbers as "evened out" is through green colored glasses.
Don't get me wrong, I thought the game was called OK (not horrible, not great), as MSU was more the aggressor and earned more calls. But to say the calls "evened out" is a bit of a stretch.

How about we say they evened out because Illinois took out Trice and Harris, putting MSU in a very tough spot, especially once Valentine got his 4th foul.
Good lord. Did people watch the game? We drove the lane, went inside and were met with body checks. The refs have no choice but to call that.
meanwhile Illinois shot nearly half of their possessions from behind the arc, a shot attempt that rarely results in a foul. So they had 15 fts on basically 35 shot attempts. That really isn't terrible.
We drove the lane. We attacked the basket. And they mugged us. This kind of play generally gets more fouls called.
Regarding the IU game I think that people are not just pissed about the foul/FT disparity, but it was the nature of the fouls called. Much of it ticky tack BS. And the travelling call on NIX? Turrible.

I must be crazy to be in a loony bin like this.
Take 10 free throws off for Illini fouling at the end trying to extend the game. 3 for the foul on Appling shooting a 3. You have 19 foul shots in 2nd half for a team that went inside exclusively for the last 12 minutes and only took 2 '3's by Appling the last 12 minutes because Garris and Trice are out the game. Illini were tired of giving up lob dunks so they fouled. They did not want Nix to score near the basket so they fouled him. I am okay with 19 freethrows for a team that exclusively attacked the basket in the second half.

I wouldn't take 10 off, but you make a good point.
You can make an argument for end of game free throws in obvious foul situtations but to take 3 off becuase Appling was shooting a 3 is the dumbest thing I have hear in awhile. I guess we better take 3 off Illinois as well because we fouled one of their guys shooting a 3 and he got 3 free throws as well.
Refs owed us one.

I re watched the second half this morning. MSU's last 10 freethrows, 6 by Appling and 4 by Valentine was Illini fouling to extend the game.
OK, I didn't think they started fouling so early to extend the game as they were close.
But either way, it's a valid point.
I am just saying he was fouled shooting a 3 which is not the norm. We have played 22 games and have maybe fouled somebody shooting a 3 in 3 games, maybe 4. It is not a normal occurance to foul a 3 point shooter every game.
I saw that exchange too. I would give anything to hear what they were saying. Can't we somehow get a mike on Izzo to save some of this stuff for posterity?
no doubt Illinois was hightowered in the second half. If you don't believe it then you need to take off the green glasses, and put down the green coolaid.
Your average UofM fan and I have something in common, neither of us went to UofM. Though we do share One major difference, I got Accepted.
For those claiming "home cooking", exactly what calls are you saying MSU was favored on? Are you just looking at the overall free throw disparity? As far as I could tell, there were no 50/50 out of bounds calls (at least 5 in the IU game, all went to IU), there were no questionable travelling calls that took points off the board (2 in the IU game) and there wasn't a quick 10 second call like in the IU game. There was a foul disparity, but I didn't see anything that was a blatantly bad call or a bad no call. Valentine's 4th foul was a clean strip and Dawson picked up a very questionable "and-1" foul in the 2nd half when he swiped at the ball but missed completely.
I love how SpartyShannon bitches non-stop in the first half about our team, its the first one when something bad happens to start up a sky is falling attitude...and now we "earned those fouls" based on her expert testimony.
I said the bad calls evened out.
As in both teams got screwed equally. As in the referees were equally incompetent to both teams. As in, no ref overly penalized a team because a player or coach did not fully respecting his authority. As in the refs put themselves in the spot light at both teams expense equally.
That has nothing to do with foul or free throw totals.
I hope that helps.
I re watched the entire second half this morning. Other than the 2 fouls they could have called on Dawson in the last 4 minutes, 1 on Paul and 1 on Abrams and a ticky tak non shooting foul on Betrand against Valentine around the 10 minute mark. Other than that MSU was getting fouled because they were forced to go inside exclusively. Illini were tired of giving up dunks and layups. No Trice and No Harris from 12 minute mark.
Whoa, is Shannon a chick? It would explain so much...
The theatrics behind the carrying call Hightower made against Illinois late in the 2nd half were embarrassing
You should try watching the game next tme.
Your argument is simplistic and stupid as fuck. You ignore all the factors as to how the foul disparity came about. Please list all the fouls called on Illinois that weren't fouls, TIA
Minnesota and Indiana fans probably said the same thing regarding their games with us...
