Just remember that UM outrecruits us every year, yet we are 4-1 over the last 5 years. Over the last 10 years, average national recruiting ranking for UM is 10th, for MSU it is 37. In the four years prior to our 4 wins, UM avg. national ranking is 6, ours is 40th. Bottom line - they can win the recruiting every year for all I care. You don't win games based on that. I won't lie - I wish the news this past weekend was different. But you win the games on the field, not on Scouts website. We have Dantonio, they have Hoke. That's a win for us, and that matters more than any recruiting ranking.
I guess you have a short memory.
1. Hoke is not RichRod. Now I don't think he is a nationally elite coach, but he is a million times better than RichRod.
2. Hoke is recruiting at a higher level than they are used to recently. The last few years of Carr and the RichRod years were pretty shitty for them in terms of recruiting.
Now we still have Coach D and we are not going anywhere. I just think people are kidding themselves if they look at the RichRod years and try to draw any relevant conclusions as it relates to Hoke.
Bottom line is if we can't recruit better and land these big ones then we can't really get to the next level. Talent matters. Even the best team of fully developed 2-3* is probably going to lose to a team full of underperforming 5*
Item #2 is just flat wrong. RichRod has very highly ranked recruiting classes, usually Top 10. They never panned out, his selections were crap, but they were RANKED Highly by the recruiting services. The conversation for this thread is, recruiting rankings and getting high-stars players. Not quality players. High-stars players. Not always one and the same.
My Blood Runs Green.....
Boise state and TCU on line 1
We're getting killed on the lines in recruiting. We've always managed to hold our own on skill positions. The Harris fiasco and the aftermath was mostly about the way that he chose to handle his recruitment (shitting all over MSU...Seemingly with purpose). One recruit doesn't make or break a program. MSU has plenty of talent here and on it's way here.....But it would be a mistake to think that the narrative that Hoke and Meyer are selling isn't taking a foothold int he region. The Harris situation proves that.
They don't win national championships.
Really this. We have pretty well held our own on the recruiting trail outside of the lines recently, most notably the offensive line. While that position is more hit or miss than most, we need to really bring I'm some talent there soon
Neither does a team of UNDERACHIEVING five stars. Thanks for playing, dickhead
That's because the cupboard was bare and they were able to promise kids playing time early. Can you really blame Drake Harris for going there? Their WRs are terrible. They won't sustain this level of recruiting. I mean, Jordan Kovacs was one of their best defensive players fergodsakes. Meanwhile, look at the talent and depth we have on defense right now. How many kids can we make guarantees to right now? Hell, 5-star DE Lawrence Thomas is playing FULLBACK.

"RCMB: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainry." - some dude from MgoBlog
Lol, didn't mean anything by it.
I'm just saying that Alabama isn't winning national championships with 2 and 3 star players.
Or ethics for that matter.
Well isn't that the same as Mr. 2-star Bell playing better than his "projection"?
Coaching >>>>>>>>>>>>> Recruiting rankings is my point. You can be Lane Kiffin and no matter who you bring in, you're not going to win a national championship at USC.
Saban is earning his 5 million per because he's the best coach in football
I definitely agree.
But at some point, to really take that next step, you need both IMO.
Bell was a legit talent from day 1, but the recruiting services whiffed on him. He's going to be a 3rd or 4th rounder. How about Kovacs?
A spot in the NFL is irrelevant when the subject is college football. But that's not the point.
The point is is that we should be wary of discrediting a walk-on for overachieving and playing well when the mantra on this board much of the time is Coach D's ability to take "low rated" guys and get the most out of them.
This is very true.
It doesn't prove anything. Harris showed no class in his comments, and a lot of confusion/indecision/lack of character in the process. MD needs to concentrate on talented kids who are excited to be Spartans, and there are plenty of kids in that group.
Last season's O caused some problems, and it's going to take a good season on that side of the ball to solve them. If the OL can get it together and stay healthy, I expect that will happen.
I take nothing away from Kovacs and the hard work he put in to earn a scholarship and see the field on Saturdays, but the point remains when a former walk-on is one of your best players, then you've got some voids in talent and there's going to be openings for young talent to see the field right away. I don't know how you could argue this. Any scUM fan will tell you that RR left almost nothing for Hoke and his staff.
MSU is not pulling 2-3's but 3-4's with a few 2's here and there..
Yet all of RR's classes were highly regarded/ranked. So what's wrong with that picture? RR didn't recruit kids for Hoke's scheme. That said, MSU nearly beat um for the 5th straight year with one of their worst Scoring O's in memory, and nearly the worst in the country.
