Yeah nice of Villarreal to load the bases for him before hand
I know it's still early but this blowing-a-game-per-week thing needs to stop for the bullpen
Missed opportunities with RISP coming back to bite again
Ball just not carrying, thought Avila got that
rub some dirt on those balls
One more AB for Miggy, please have someone on when he gets up.
Has he ever pitched well after the 6th inning? That is, when he seems to be 'ON"?
Time to call up Rondon and see what he can do
Rogue Leader= Obese coward who didn't attend MSU and has no college degree
Really can't believe the calls on Fielder and Victor.... ump really wanted that game over quickly. Yet this game never should have been close.

I predict we see Villareal optioned to Toledo and Luis Marte called up after the game.
Yeah its only been 8 games but the bullpen has not been good at all. 5 walks today and a wild pitch, that's bad
this is a .500 baseball team until the pen gets fixed (if/when)
i only care about spartans --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqsAJQc-NCY
Man, I find it hard to believe they can all be this bad at the same time, but stranger things have happened I suppose...
Since light travels faster than sound, people appear bright until you hear them speak.
You can see why Papa Grande got picked up. (This in no way is intended to imply he is good, just how desperate the Tigers are for relievers.) It's time to panic.
Agree. All these guys aren't proven shut down guys, but all have been really good, if not dominant, for stretches. I don't see anyone going wire to wire strong, but a few at a time need to be up while others are down. Otherwise days like today will be common and it will be impossible to rise from .500.
yeah, I rave about Dombrowski alot but his failure to address the pen.....AGAIN....is looking pretty bad right now. In fairness, it took a shit ton of money to sign Sanchez and JV, so you have to wonder how much is left. Contrary to popular opinion, even Illitch has his breaking point....how many $5.55 pies do you have to sell to sign a couple more arms for the bully? Dunno, but the payroll is already at roughly 240 mil last I checked and that was before JV signed......yikes.
I don't know; I picture a season like last year, hovering about 10 games over, waiting for someone to step up from the pen. The offense and starters(excluding Porcello) should keep them battling near the top of this division.
Dotel and Coke have got off to rough starts but have been decent 7th-8th inning pitchers in the past.
Benoit has been OK,
Smyly one bad appearance and one good one.
Al Al looks good too.
Downs has been a pleasant surprise.
Only Villarreal looks totally out of place. He will no doubt be shipped out or given the Below role of only pitching once the team falls 5 runs behind.
At some point though, even for a big spending club with high aspirations, you need quality contributions from young guys making small money. Yeah, some of the pen vets have nice contracts, but the Villareals and Alburqurqes and maybe a Rondon will have to step up and have big years. It's in the bullpen for this Tiger team, but there are no dream teams in baseball, every team that has a big year gets help from cheap guys playing above their pay grade. Like you said, DD may not have had the extra coin to go get a big name, so he trusted his scouts that said there is potential in the unproven arms out there.
Gotta love the panic and comments like this after 1/20th of a season has been played.
While the bullpen is the weakest part of the team (just like with a lot of other teams), that is not going to cause the Tigers to be a .500 team. The Tigers bullpen is 7th in the league in ERA.
You know what teams haven't blown a save yet this year? 3-5 Toronto, 4-4 White Sox, 4-4 NYY, 3-6 Houston, and 6-3 Texas.
Tiger bullpen is last in the league in ERA.
I don't think the .500 statement is right, but the pen is an issue. Problem is, there aren't many answers outside the organization. Trades don't start, generally, until June at the earliest, and teams don't usually dump good bullpen arms because every team needs them. The current guys have to pitch better. There will be some shuffling between Detroit and Toledo, but if anyone at Toledo is a surefire fix, they'd probably have been in Detroit to start with.
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
Guess I was looking at a wrong stat on this link:
Glanced at Runs per game column and just assumed it was ERA. Thanks for the correction.
It's not a whole pen issue, it's a few individuals that have melted down and are inflating the numbers.
Coke - 4 appearances, 2 excellent, 2 terrible.
Dotel - 3 appearances, 2 good, 1 terrible.
Villarreal - 3 appearances, 1 good, 2 the worst performances EVER.
Outside of those three, Albuquerque, Smyly, Downs, and Benoit have been pretty good.
The thing about the closer being unsettled, and or Benoit being the closer is that it shifts rolls in the pen around. Benoit being more or less named closer means we need someone to pitch the 7th. If Benoit relieves Downs in the 7th yesterday rather than Villarreal, the Tigers may have been in a better position in the 8th and 9th as the probability of Benoit melting down is a lot less.
So now you have Benoit closing...who do you have in his old roll? They tried Villareal twice, and it was terrible both times. I'm guessing they send him down and bring up Marte soon and try going with Albuquerque/Marte in that roll soon.
