Need to keep Gary out of foul trouble.
What's Plan B if he picks up an early foul? Dawson? Appling?
I don't see how he gets into foul trouble defending Curry, unless the refs have an agenda. Curry is a jumpshooter, and Harris is smart enough not to foul a jumpshooter more than once. I'd be more worried if he was a slasher.
It's not as much staying out of foul trouble as it is denying Curry the ball. That kid has unlimited range and he can shoot it over people too, so Harris has to limit his touches. If he gets hot, we're getting bounced tonight.
That being said, no, that's not the key match-up. The key match-up is Nix vs. Plumlee. If Nix can establish himself offensively earlier, they're going to have to double and that's going to leave shooters and cutters open, and Duke will have a tough time stopping us. If Nix can't score early, we're in trouble.
Good points. If Curry could drive, I think that matchup would favor Duke.
It will be interesting to see how much Duke tries to run Curry off double screens.
Well I guess there are a lot of key match-ups because I think Dawson v. Sulaimon is the key. If Dawson guards like he did against Hardaway at tBres and then hits the offensive glass hard, we win going away (barring Curry/Kelly making like 10 3s). If he plays like he did the last half of the regular season, that puts a lot more pressure on Valentine to be the difference.
Agreed. I think Harris is definitely capable of checking Curry and we switch so often Dawson/Appling will end up on him at some point. It will be interesting to see how they guard Nix. If Plumlee guards him 1 on 1 we're gonna need the big fella to do some scoring
I think we can survive a good night from Curry. Gary will need to make him work for his shots - and switches off ball screens wil be key.
We need to own the paint and the glass. Do those two things and it will take Kelly shooting like he did against Miami to take us down. Kelly has really struggled since that game (well, really since the game after when he had 18 against Va Tech - also the last time he hit a 3). AP is the last guy he wants to see. AP has guarded better players this year than Kelly and on the offensive side he should be able to take him off the dribble.
All in all the matchups are good, no spot that looks like Duke can kill us.
Plumlee vs Nix
Payne vs Kelly
Suliamon vs Dawson
Cook vs Appling
Suliamon is dangerous, Dawson and Valentine really need to check him. I have seen him blow up before, that can't happen tonight. We get scoring from our bigs and rebound we win. If the refs let the guys play, big advantage MSU.

I really think the Dawson - Sulaimon matchup is key as well for MSU.
I's more worried about Sulaimon going off than I am Curry/Kelly/Plumlee.
im thinking that coach K might start throwing an early double when nix gets fed in the post like indiana did. i really hope nix has watched enough film to know that he can fire it across the lane for a slam every time if that happens
Dawson needs to destroy that kid on the offensive glass. He has about 30 pounds on him and a few inches. Not to mention Izzo's mentality on rebounding. Gonna need him to keep the effort up relentlessly.
I am gravely disappointed. Again you have made me unleash my dogs of war.
Oh look he's setting us up!!! Ridiculing our guard!
Keeping the sunshiners in check since 2000.
Solid post. I'll add minimize turnovers as well. Also...they cannot get "jobbed" by the refs. If Coach K has the refs in his back pocket tonight with respect to us being too "physical", it's going to make our task infinitely tougher. If they "let" us properly defend...I agree...big advantage to the Spartans.
"I love March!" - Tom Izzo
The physical mismatch that Dawson has on anybody that Duke will throw at him is tremendous, and Izzo knows this (hence his comments on pushing Dawson more now than he has at any point this season). If his head is in the game and his body feels good, Dawson should get a double-double. They have no one who could even dream to keep him off the glass.
At least 10 from Dawson would be huge. He will get his chances. When his man goes to help Plumlee/Kelly when Nix/Payne have the ball down low he'll be able to slash in from the high post and get shots in the paint. He needs to hit them.

Really? Has Harris ever been in foul trouble? That kid is smart. He'll be solid tonight no question.
He had 4 against Memphis with a few bad fouls. I expect he will play well tonight.
