Floor play may show something different.
So Dawson's defense is so good it shut Hardaway down for 3 weeks?
Are we actually debating whether Dawson played good D against UM's second best player? Jesus, this place is insufferable. I know we're in meltdown and throw our fellow Spartans under the bus mode, but at least give him some measure of credit for the obvious. Feel free to continue to rip him for not showing up on offense. That is at least a defensible position.
Generally speaking, offense is a defensible position.
I read the news today, oh boy .. ..
About a lucky man who made the grade
Dawson's issues on offense have little to do with his scoring. The big problem is his penchant for turning the ball over in bunches. Not scoring much we can deal with, not scoring much AND gifting the opponent opportunities to score is another story.
tRCMB - Visit at your own risk of being disgusted.
Appling has been playing like crap and that steal was moronic, but at the same time I am finding it hard to go full blown Wookiee on him when a gunshot to his head would have been a no call. The crap scUM was allowed to get away with was an embarassment to the game.
The RCMB...is one of the most awful, alarming, inappropriate, disgusting, and offensive msg boards in the history of the internet.
Harris did play a good amount of D on Hardaway as well, so there is some credit due there. Regardless if he plays amazing D or not, we NEED offensive production out of him. Even if it is just a lot of hustle and O-rebounds that lead to points, we need something. Whatever has happened since the last scUM game, Dawson is in a massive funk offensively.
As it stands today, we have two scoring threats teams have to be concerned with: Payne and Harris. Nix has been inconsistent, but teams still at least have to respect him near the hoop. If we don't start getting more production from Dawson and Appling on the offensive end, we are going to have play lights out D every night just to have a chance against solid teams.
It's called playing two top 15 teams on the road at the end of the toughest B10 season in recent memory.
Yes we lost 3 tough games in a row, but lets not panic yet.
IMO once we (and other B10 teams) get out of the conference, we will see a better level of play.
Sure, but it really depends on Appling. If he doesn't plat at a higher level this team isn't going anywhere. He missed a bunch of open shots again today, and I think he's like 0 for his last 14 3 point attempts. He simply can't make shots right now and isn't playing smart defense. His two first half fouls were dogging Albrecht 25 feet away from the rim and challenging a Burke jumper just inside the 3 point line. Neither were smart defensive plays. He's just not playing well enough for this team to beat anyone good away from Breslin.
Right now Harris and Payne are the only two who are real scoring threats. Guys will need to up their level of play if they want to make a deep run. After all, it's become Final Four or bust with this team. A 5 loss conference season and a S16 run isn't going go feel good for anyone.
This would meet preseason expectations.
According to whom? The media?
And don't expectations change as the season goes on? This team is one player playing better from being elite this season.
Top 20 preseason team, picked 4th in the BIG by most.
I don't disagree MSU should have a higher ceiling.
God I miss those. About the only thing that would make me feel better today would be Appling with an inexplicable +45 for the game.
I feel like I've been reading this excuse a lot lately. "Ok we lost but only because players A, B and C played like shit and because all these other scenarios played out".
These guys that are always playing like shit need to get their shit together. This team needs to start overcoming these obstacles instead of falling back on these excuses. Just my opinion.
I think there are those that share that opinion.
Somewhere the right balance is needed. Coming out of these games with losses is tough. Against both Indiana and UM, MSU had the upper hand as the game was winding down, and let a W slip away.
A voice of reason which seems to be very rare these days.
To be the best, you've got to beat the best. 3 straight L's to IU,OSU,and um is beyond disappointing when you pulling for the team you believe has the talent to be the best. All 3 L's were winnable. I just don't want to accept that MSU isn't the best. But the results . . .
Missing killer instinct and crunch- time poise,
The original question posed was not if MSU could be the best, but if it was in trouble.
I'm sorry, losing to the #1 team in a weird game, and then two on the road to HUNGRY top 15 rivals at the end of the season is not reason to panic.
Let's wait until after Thursday to asses where this team is. ..
There are some huge idiots on this board, but I will never understand how so many people doubt Izzo and this program after the track record established.
When has Izzo made excuses? Never. He tells it like it is, and this stretch was as tough as they come at the end of a dog fight conference season.
JFC are you spoiled. How long have you been following MSU sports? As recently as 2006-2007 we were struggling as a bubble team just to make the dance, on the heels of a 4-8 football catastrophe. Yeah, this season is unbearable....
If we lose to the cheesedicks on Thursday, then yes, we should push the panic button.
He plays his ass off every play of every game.
Again, it's not the losses themselves, it's the manner in which they happened.
Against Indiana, up four with less than two minutes left. We foul Watford, he converts the three point play. Up one with 1:09 left, Appling at the line with a chance to extend the lead back to three. Bricks the front end of the 1-and-1, we miss a box out, Oladipo tips it in to put IU ahead for good. Not clutch on our part.
Against OSU, a six-point lead at halftime which we stretch to nine, 36-27. Then we let Aaron Craft go nuts, and pretty soon we're staring at a 10-point deficit. The rest of the second half is filled with MSU turnovers and shooting struggles.
Against UM, tie game at the end, chance to run out the clock and take the final shot. Appling has a major brain fart and gifts the winning basket to Burke. The 12-0 run on either side of halftime is also troubling. That made two games in a row where we came out of the locker room flatter than a Forbin crush to start the second half.
I get that all three losses were to top 20 teams. I get that the last two have been on the road. But we were in a decent position to win all three and could not finish. That's why I'm worried. If Izzo isn't going to call timeouts to stop opponent runs, then Appling or Nix needs to step up on the floor and start kicking some ass.
Sure. Players screaming at other players will fix everything.
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
