Because we regularly struggled to beat the kind of lesser teams early that other teams were running up big margins on. A lot of voters formed early opinions. The way Izzo builds a team for the long run is often not optically pretty in the interim.
15-2 since Dec. 1. playing in toughest conf. by far.
Should be top 5, but won't be cuz we don't win pretty.
By about mid-December the polls are "set". After that, if you win you move up. If you lose, you move down. It doesn't really make any sense to be honest and isn't a real decent way to say which teams are better or not.
I'm pretty sure Pomeroy looked at the polls and found that the preseason poll actually co-related better with tournament success than the in-season polls. You'd think that after you get in-season and there is more information about teams that it would improve the polls ability to rank teams. It doesn't seem to help at all.
Haven't seen the new polls yet, but I'm guessing we are 8 at best, and 10 at worst. This is one of those years when top teams lose regularly enough to juggle the top five, and few outside the top five put together enough of a run to move up. I predict Gonzaga will go down this week, so knock off another top five or six team has been on a nice conference run. Don't sweat the polls. Just enjoy the ride....
Spartans ...committed to bring Paul Bunyan home in 2013.
Hollis will have to leave the room when Michigan State is discussed.
I generally don't care much about polls, and the same goes for this week. Except I want tomorrow to be a top-10 matchup, and I think we'll easily move up to 8-10. So I'm good. I wish the game was tonight.
I'm not a poll guy either Chick, but as we get closer to tournament time I find myself watching them anyway. . . being a 1 or 2 seed is such an incredible advantage in the tournament, not to mention which region the committee decides to place us in.
What time do the rankings update?
This will be answered rather fast since I just started a thread on this question.
Ah, I see. Around noon or so.
I'm not one to advocate printing tshirts, just because you were ranked #1... But people are trying to fool hemselvs that it's not an honor or mildly important to be highly ranked. Yes, all that matters is what happens in the tournament, but the advantages that come with seeding and location are directly linked to rankings. Also, I do feel it is somewhat important for a program to be consistently ranked in the top ten and a feather in the cap to be seen as a top team. As long as you preform in March, I think most teams would rather not always 'come out of nowhere.'
True, but winning takes care of all of that anyway. I watch them all season. I'm always curious where MSU is ranked. I just don't get bent out of shape if I feel like we're too low or something.
ESPN has MSU #8 in their updated power rankings. IU #1, and scum #4.
People stopped watching after we lost to UConn. It colored their opinion of the team. No clue why they ranked OSU ahead of us last week. It's like they are trying to not rank us in the Top 10.
Higher rankings are also good for exposure.
CBS, etc. would rather have two ranked teams playing than not. So despite whatever household name you think you are, it can only help recruiting to be nationally televised more often than not and higher rankings help that happen and the building builds more hype around it which good recruits, who want to play in the NBA, ostensibly like.
Draymond Green, Magic Johnson, and Oscar Robertson are the only players to have two triple-doubles in the NCAA Tournament.
Stephan Bardo does not like us. Only voter to rank MSU out of the top 10 @14.
Gonzagas rpi is pathetic.
To me there are only 5 or 6 teams which should be ranked ahead of MSU:
MSU should be ranked no lower than 6.
Even with those teams I would maybe rank them 5.
Edit: forgot about Florida. I guess no lower than 7th

That is patently false.
Seeding and location are directly related to the team's resume (i.e. RPI, quality wins, bad loses, etc).
A team's ranking (AP or Coaches) plays no role in how the committee seeds anyone.
14? That is a joke.
I'll be interested to see who votes us out of the top ten this week (you know a couple voters will).
AP Top 5 are out:
IU, Duke, Miami, scUM, Zaga
W/ scum being top-5 and the Izzone being so terrible now I could see them storming the court if we win.
My protege is a freshmen in the Izzone this year, he's a good kid and definitely not a costume wearer or a texter, I will make sure to remind him today that their job is to jump, be loud on defense, and not to rush the court when we beat scUM in our house. Hopefully he can spread that sentiment around.
