Or is this opinion the product of the 24 hour sports news cycle, sports talk, message boards, etc?
I really don't understand why today's refs suck more wang than they did ten or twenty years ago.
I am gravely disappointed. Again you have made me unleash my dogs of war.
Much like the NHL, the size and speed of the players makes it way to congested on the ice or court. 4 on 4 hockey is far better than 5 on 5, and hockey on an Olympic sized sheet is superior to the smaller rink because it spreads out the larger and faster modern players. I think the speed and congested nature of the modern basketball game makes it difficult to officiate. I think the three point line was a good idea since it emphasizes the skill of shooting the ball, which is what basketball was originally meant to do. I think there should be some kind of penalty for dunking the ball...maybe only 1 point for a dunk....or, better yet, none since it is clearly offensive basket interference when the players hand touches the rim or enters to cylindrical space above the rim.
And what's with that backboard? Makes it far too easy for players shooting down low, when all we clearly need is a peach basket.
Well when you have guys like Ed Rush running the show I think it's obvious why it has gone downhill. Also the NCAA needs to hire full time refs.

The officials do suck, but they're working with some really shitty rules too, let's not forget that.

A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.
Game speed combined with more than a couple old fart referees (Jim Burr, I'm lookin' at you) have led to bad officiating.
Short answer, yes. It used to be "I hope they let them play", now it's "I hope we don't get screwed too bad".
HD TV makes it much easier to see the action.

Part of the problem is these are the same refs from 15-20 years ago. I saw a game on ESPN classic from the late 80s (I think) that Eddie Hightower was doing. And he looked old then.
Remind yourself. Nobody built like you, you design yourself.
Also if you want to be entertained, just google any shitty ref and see the articles and threads from SO MANY different fan bases ripping on the ref.
The answer is yes. But in the refs defense the game is getting tougher to call because of the size, speed and constant contact. You literally could call a foul EVERY possession. Therefore you have to decide which fouls actually caused an "unfair advantage" and not just part of the constant incidental contact. The judgement around that determination is not very good.
The moment is eternal
NCAA sports officiating in general is getting worse, and the B1G is leading the charge.
