Legitimate question IMO. At this moment, it's clear both fan-bases are rooting heavily for the other to be with them at the top. The big 2 little 10 stuff has already started because of recruiting rankings. In the state of Michigan it just doesn't seem like a true hatred for OSU exists among their fan-base, but rather just the regurgitated BS that they hear Hoke spew.
Your rivals are who you have to go through to achieve your goals. For Michigan that is OSU.
We hate them and they hate us. Trust me the hate is still there and if not, Meyer beating Hoke in AA will sure stir the pot this year. Imagine the Walvies in tears because Meyer ended their precious home streak. As for Michigan doing well, I could care less if they are good or bad, I just want to beat them. Sure, I'll take beating a strong team over a weak one because lets be honest beating Michigan means nothing now. I remember when beating Michigan actually use to mean something but now its just an annul occurrence to see their ego and arrogance busted all over national TV. I know Michigan will return to form and it should make for some good games. Ten year war 2.0....
As for the Big 2 Little 10 I don't want to see two teams run a conference and I hope other schools can step up and compete. I've never been a fan of this mind set and would like to see a more competitive league.
It's in their interests to keep performing fellatio on each other.
Basically Michigan needs OSU to validate their nonsensical hype. OSU needs Michigan to validate their nonsensical hype. They both realize that, so they keep validating each other.
That statement actually doesn't mean anything. Is Michigan okay with losing to everyone else on their schedule?
hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.
All of the Michigan fans I know will talk trash about MSU for hours on end but end with saying something generic about hating OSU more.
When it comes to MSU it's a university thing. When it comes to OSU it's just football.
I find it all very comical. UM fans are a pathetic bunch.
On mgoblog, they have daily threads about MSU. OSU is almost never mentioned, except as an afterthought when they crawl all over themselves to talk about how we're not really a rival. Honestly, if the only way you ever talk about a school is just generic "oh, yeah, we TOTALLY hate those guys! For real! Hate hate hate!", then it's probably not the genuine article.
But the contrived rivalry gets eaten up by the media, so they keep doing it. I mean, come on. All the "Ohio" crap, all the "I, uh....didn't wear, errrr.....uhhh.....red...." bullshit is so painfully artificial, especially when the two schools work together in everything, it's hard to believe anyone buys it.
I don’t hate buckeyes…I don’t hate anybody…hate is not worth my time. Since we are being “honest” about everything here…lets lay everything out on the table. Past 20 years. OSU has won 12 games to Michigans 10. It was fairly balance until 2001 when JT…the coach that was found cheating by playing ineligible players ( I really dont care how they became ineligible) was hired…this is when THE GAME became lopsided. Now, I cannot say in all honesty that JT cheated by playing ineligible players every year he was there…but it can’t be ruled out either…so his whole time there should have a big fat (*) Same as Rich Rod…Dude knew what the hell he was doing, he knew it was wrong, you can’t be in coaching that long and not know the rules. PERIOD!
I do believe the 10 year war is back with Michigan and OSU. I would agree with Nutty in I don’t want to see a Big 2 and Little 10…it is not good for the conference as a whole. The only way you get better is to be truly tested week end and week out…to the point that any game can go any direction and no game is a gimmie...for anybody.
Michigan is a weird place.
1. They claim Ohio State is their rival, but they want tOSU to win so they can latch onto their success.
2. They claim to be great rivals with Notre Dame, but ND didn't think so and dropped them from their schedule completely with little notice.
3. They claim Michigan State isn't their rival but talk about us constantly.
I disagree with this. Ohio State doesn't need Michigan. tOSU has been in BCS title games and is far more relevant nationally than Michigan currently is.
It starts when your commissioner quits cow-towing to two schools in football. Dinardo said it too. Delaney knows how our conference is perceived in football throughout the country and he knows football is a cash cow. He will bend over backwards for the two teams he believes will help bring in more tv revenue.
Is that fair? Probably tilts the playing field a bit as far as manufactured hype towards those two schools, but everyone realizes that they are not that far, if at all, ahead of many big ten schools and all you have to do is win. OSU and Michigan will remain beatable in this conference with or without delany's help. Hell, we were 7-6 last year and there was no discernible difference between us, uofm, or OSU.
They're rivals but outside of MI and OH I don't think it's considered anything special. Playing it up like it's "The Game" in all of college football is kind of a joke anymore.
Anyone else find it laughable that UM is mad because OSU had become better at cheating than UM did? Your half NC in the modern era is tainted at best. Your program is as dirty as everyone else's.
Not sure why everyone is downvoting you, its definitely a legitimate question. Delaney is OBSESSED with UM/OSU and most of the decisions made for this conference are with their best interests in mind. Period.
Don't think the Football rivalry is manufactured, there is defiantly a base there, and a tradition.
However, some of these new "facets" of the rivalry are completely contrived in order to promote the idea that nothing else matters.
The idea that Michigan and Ohio State are more important than all of college football is fabricated and both schools are working diligently (together) to keep this ingrained in their bases. It's noting more than marketing.
Tattoo's = the devil
$282,000 for one player = remember the good old days
That's the Michigan difference.
Tend to agree with this. We all know OSU lives for the UM game. For UM, of course they want to win, but I don't think their hatred is anywhere near OSU's. Every Ohio paper talks up this game 24/7/365. The Detroit papers of course pander to UM fans, talking about how huge it is. But, the people who have brains take the News & Freep about as serious as The Onion. The sports juggernaut known as ESPN of course hypes it up, with Herbie and Desmond leading the charge. Again, consider the source there. Has it been huge in the past? Sure. Is it anymore? Not really. Doesn't stop certain fan bases and the mediums in their back pockets from serving their interests. Been that way for years.
Maybe you should win more than once in eight years before you declare the ten year war "back"
Saying Tressel was cheating is such a stretch. Dude made a stupid mistake, nothing more. If he was a UM Coach you'd say the exact same thing. Throwing RichRod under the bus now that he's gone and sucked ass anyways doesn't count for anything. What RichRod did was completely overblown as well.
"The Game" is only relevant in MI and OH. Nobody cares nationally. The game I look forward most to watching is Bama and LSU. And I live in Michigan and love the big ten. Face it, the big ten is a regional draw and nothing more when it comes to football. SEC is just a better product, unfortunately.
I never hear any of my UM fan friends say much of anything about OSU. They are constantly talking crap about MSU though. And I know for a fact they take a loss to MSU way harder than one to OSU. The OSU/UM rivalry has history, but we are their chief rival and no one will convince me otherwise.
Funny thing about ol' Rich Rod. The spin I got in the metro Detroit area was that college football was evolving to everyone running the spread. Who wouldn't want the "guy who basically invented the spread" running their team? Furthermore, since he invented the spread, "you know damn well he knows how to stop it". Guess that didn't work out so well.
This is the second time I've seen someone use "defiantly" in place of "definitely". Knowledge is power, people.
Tend to disagree with this.............while some is true, I think the reason they talk crap is because they know there is a MSU audience here. Very few OSU fans in most workplaces or circle of friends......at least as compared to MSU obviously. Ripping OSU will not get the reaction that doing the same to MSU will. Regarding losses, much of the same. They know they have to face the music with MSU fans, while chances are slim they do with OSU.
Bottom line for me is I hate UM as much as anyone else. But, I don't care who they consider their rival(s). Let them have OSU, ND, and App St. Makes for interesting conversation though. I am concerned with MSU. UM has earned thinking they are a big deal in football with their past success. Just like MSU is a huge deal for every school in B1G hoops due to our success. We keep winning in football and the rest will take care of itself, to the chagrin of Jim Delany.
