Weird how it is a rivalry now
Not just you man, but a ton of posters don't fucking get it.
I haven't met one michigan fan in person who says MSU isn't a rivalry game. MSU is a rival, but OSU is THE rival. Others have said schools only have one true rival - for them its OSU - but MSU is a huge game on the schedule. That's just someone's definition of "rivalry." A lot of people here somehow take a huge amount of offense to that.
You know what would make michigan state THE rivalry? We beat them as often as OSU does.
I see your point, but I have met a couple who flat out say it's not a rivalry. They're probably just trying to piss me off though, whatever, F them.
I've seen about three posts on the internet since 2007 about MSU not being a rival.....from Michigan fans.
I've seen hundreds of posts on here since 2007 referencing those 3 posts.
well that is your problem, you only are looking at since 2007 when it was one sided. When they were winning, I heard tons of people say it was not a rivalry.

I'm sorry, but giving a shit about Michigan is a luxury I won't afford myself as a fan while we're sucking.
Won't happen. It never has...
MSU is a huge rival. Anyone who says otherwise is just trolling to get a rise out of you.
This. I read a thread on mgoblog once where they "ranked their rivalry levels" or some stupid crap. Anyways, a bunch of them placed MSU way down on the list and cited that "I ranked them low because it really pisses Sparty off to say they aren't our rival HAHAHAHA." Which of course just proves they are obsessed with us. No one goes around telling everyone how "Northwestern isn't REALLY a rival to us."
I mean, they RUSHED the field when they beat us on Saturday.
I would like to know how fans took a picture of something that never left the lockerroom.
4 out of the last 5 is a good start.
Have no idea, saw it on facebook. Looked too big to be a replica.
Before Dantonio they claimed we weren't a rival.
They are just bitter little idiots.
B1G divisions made us their #1 rival, like it or not.
The tOSU game is irrelevant now when it comes to being a rival.
scUM fans don't embrace change well.
Every Michigan fan I know wants to beat msu. They hate osu as well but they know the in state rivalry is special. To those of you saying we can't beat them often enough to make it rivalry FUCK OFF. Look at the record since we joined the big ten and blow it out your ass
To die in ann arbor is redundant
Of course we are a rival. The childish scUM fans do whatever it takes to get a rise out of Spartans. Can't expect children to behave like adults.
Give them NOTHING but take from them EVERYTHING.

Quick Analysis that may sound slightly condescending:
OSU is a rivalry that has historically been evenly matched, we recruit against them more than any other program, we competed against them most years for the B1G Ten title, and as they are the last game of the season each team had a chance to play the spoiler if they other team was undefeated. OSU has been the true, end of the year measuring stick and are a rival in the sense that our fear/hatred of them comes from the fact that they will be a better team in any given year. OSU was rarely a game we expect to win.
MSU has historically not been a huge threat in the B1G title race, but is a rival in the sense that they are always a thorn in our side. Many years MSU's main focus has been on upsetting Michigan when Michigan was focused on other/bigger things. MSU/UM is a rivalry in the sense that most people are afraid of MSU because we were afraid of losing to a usually inferior team that got pumped for the single game and upset UM while UM was looking too far forward. MSU was often a game we often expected to win, but in the back our minds were scared sh1tless we would actually lose.
IMO the only way MSU will become the main rival is not if they beat Michigan regularly, but also are a serious competitor for the B1G championship.
I grew up in Ann Arbor. Every year, no matter how bad MSU was, UM-MSU weekend was a big deal. Not once did I ever hear someone say the MSU game wasn't a big deal. Maybe that's the difference between alums and Walverines... I don't know... but posters around here are constantly butthurt over this stupid shit every week of the year.
I don't think you could have hit that nail any better. your description of the two in-state team rivalry is spot on. plus 1
This. I wore my "beat state" shirt around with pride on saturday! Anyone who says "I don't consider them a rival" is just trying to troll. We have three great rivalries in you guys, osu, and notre dame. The best part is they are all at different parts of the season, so they are all special games in their own way.
1) Notre Dame: Right at the beginning of the season and it's usually still hot out and Summer like. Battle of the two teams with the best win %
2) MSU game: middle of the season checkpoint. If it's around Halloween time it's better. (I thought the weather on Saturday was amazing). Always a close game between the two biggest schools in the state. Blue vs Green. Records are basically meaningless in this game. It's going to be a battle either way.
3) OSU game: Last game of the season. It's the end of November, it's thanksgiving time, it's cold, it's the start of winter. Usually it's the battle for the B1G title. Even if it's not, one team can always play for bragging rights and spoil the other's season.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Still, I have not heard many Michigan fans claim that MSU isn't a rival, they're just not the biggest rival. They consider Ohio State to be THE rival, which I think makes sense given the history between those two teams. For some reason this makes a lot of Spartans feel slighted. I don't get it myself.
Paul Bunyan is like the old girl friend that they never miss until they see her happy with someone else.
Disagree---MSU is THE rival for UM.
OSU became a rival for UM because of Bo and Woody and their relationship, and at one time that game meant the Big Ten Championship. That has waned considerably.
Bo was hired to beat MSU, not OSU, and players were taught not to talk about MSU, and not to admit they were a rival. That means that game is huge.
UM's OSU's biggest rival based on geography, but not UM's.
MSU beat them four years in a row, and the rivalry since 1950 when the modern era of college football began is very close.
Here's another clue, Um fans live on MSU message boards and talk smack year round, rarely do you see UM do that on OSU boards.
I know lots of Oklahoma State alumni, and they don't really care that OU's "main rivalry" is with Texas and not them. Maybe the lopsided nature of the OU/OSU rivalry has something to do with it?
I'm not sure why Michigan State fans have such a hard time with UM having another rivalry that may be more important than MSU.
