Well MSU was "serious contender" for the B1G championship 3 of the last 4 years.
And with the new divisions, uofm/MSU will always play a HUGE role in who goes to Indy.
Edit: I should also add that MSU is undoubtedly uofm's biggest rival in every non-football sport.

Bullshit, it's your defense mechanism. It's taught to you along with the fight song at freshman orientation. Historically, MSU has only been a rival when you win. I started at MSU in 1991, and that fall, and again in 1992, after the games, I got a call from my UM buddies ragging on me about the game. In 1993, when I called them, I got "Bah, no big deal. Ohio State is our only real rival."
I've heard effectively the same thing from tons of UM fans over the years, and so has 90% of this board.
Maybe the recent streak has kept more UM fans from being able to hold in the hatred, but it was always there when you won.
Now here you are rushing the field after beating MSU on a late field goal...an MSU team that is in a down year, mind you. Which, by the definition that many of your fellow fans have used over the last 4 years, means that your win doesn't even count.
This. Remember SCum didn't want MSU to become a university and they definitely didn't want them in the B1G. They don't want in-state competition taking the focus off them...because after all...it's ALWAYS about them.
tO$U will ALWAYS be their # 1 rival and people who get upset with it in Spartan Nation shouldn't. It's a border war that started after all over who owed Toledo. The Bo & Woody decade of the 1970's just made it even more intense for these two schools. It has nothing to do with MSU other than they don't want a "third party" to ever crash their B1G championship game...like Denny Stolz 1974 team did in beating one of Woody's best teams ever when they were # 1 in the nation at the time. Woody NEVER got over it either. Next thing we know...the fucker lobbies the B1G to get us a "death penalty" (at the time) probation because one of our assistant coaches loaned a player his credit card so he could buy a sport coat for traveling on the road in because he couldn't afford to buy one himself.
"I love March!" - Tom Izzo
This is where I've always called out UM fans on these claims of OSU being a bigger rival. Fine, they can claim that in football. But what a great example of the bandwagon nature of the fanbase to base their main rivalry on one single sport that UM is (historically) good at.
Rivalries within a given sport are nice, really intense, good for that sport, etc. Rivalries that transcend all sports and even day to day life, 365 days a year, are the types of rivalries that make college athletics such a great and unique aspect of American sports culture.
Well said. The MSU/UM basketball and hockey rivalries have always been much more intense than UM/OSU. We live side by side, MSU/UM is clearly a 365 days a year type of rivalry, whereas the UM/OSU game is really just one weekend in November. When it comes to that game, you'll also hear fans say they wouldn't mind the opponent being undefeated, just so that they can knock them off. That's not the way MSU/UM works.
Location: Mumbai, India
Is it strange that the trophy wasn't available after the game was over for U of M to bring it out on the field? That's what we did the past couple of years, but it was stashed inside the tunnel this year.

Uh, have you read some of the comments in the other threads? We've never acquited ourselves very well when it comes to projecting an aura of maturity and magnaminity.
They care because they haven't seen it in a while, and good chance that it's in AA only on a short term lease
They care because it's better than whatever they got for that lame-ass, undeserved squeak-by win in that after-thought BCS bowl last January
That is definitely not true. Bo was hired to beat osu. Michigan was humiliated 50-14 the year before and Woody had been kicking their ass on a yearly basis.
Keep in mind it has only been 5 years since the winner of "The Game" determined which of the two won the big ten title. If osu wasn't on probation this year it probably would determine who goes to the championship game.
This is not a post dogging the msu rivalry. Both are important. But to say that the osu game isn't going to be important in the future is dumb. Michigan is just going to have to take both teams very seriously.
Anybody who says the Michigan vs. Michigan State game isn't a rivalry is totally full of it. Michigan has three rivalry games and two trophy games (Bunyan and Little Brown Jug). Two of those rivals we play every year. One of those rivals we don't (ND). For that reason alone, Michigan State is at least our second biggest rival. Ohio State is our most important rivalry because of Bo Schembechler and Woody Hayes. The history between those two is incredible. There were huge conspiracy theories about them back in the day. Bo thought Woody was trying to send spies into the Michigan practices. Woody thought Bo sent attractive women to serve the Ohio State team dinner in an attempt to distract the players from thinking about the game... it was crazy. That level of paranoia, attention, and interest is what it takes to overshadow Michigan vs Ohio State. It seems like Dantonio is trying to get you all at that level. He's been bombastic and arrogant toward Michigan for many years now... but it's been a one-way street. Hoke has been a total class act and so was Rich Rod, for what it's worth. Michigan State wants the rivalry to reach legendary status. Michigan just isn't interested.
explain how Dantonio has been arrogant for many years.
Michigan isn't interested...until they lose. Tell me the past 4 years of losing to MSU hasn't eaten up your teams and fan base's guts inside. You finally break the streak this year...at home..favored by 10...you win by 2 points on a FG with 5 seconds left. You score only 4 FGs and no TDs in the game, and our FG kicker missed a 38 yarder that would have been the difference between us winning and losing. Then...at games end...you guys rush the field. Yeah...Michigan isn't interested in this rivalry alright...not much they aren't.
Depends on where you live. For U of M students/alumni/fans that live out of state (and there are a lot in that category), Michigan-Ohio State is more of a "365 days a year" rivalry than Michigan-Michigan State. Before going to U of M I spent equal amounts of time living out of state than I did living in Michigan. You don't hear about the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry outside of Michigan nearly as much as you hear about Michigan-Ohio State, or even Michigan-Notre Dame for that matter. But in the state, it's in your face every day. I haven't lived in Michigan since graduating from U of M and I have had much more exposure to Buckeye fans than Spartan fans. If it wasn't for the internet and sites like this I would have very little exposure to the Michigan/Michigan State rivalry. For fans in the state it's right up there with Michigan-OSU, if not greater for some. But it is a regional rivalry, and Ohio State is a national one. Just the way it is.
lmao i love this passage:
"Dantonio went on to insult the intelligence of every person listening by saying that he wont comment on it as if we all didn’t just hear him comment on it. That’s how arrogant and out of touch with reality this man truly is."
If that's the tone you drew from a grinning Mark Dantonio when he said that, then go ahead and call him whatever you want... because you're a fucking idiot
chatsports is a garbage site that just completely makes up stories. Remember "Ace Williams"?
I totally agree that tO$U is your # 1 rival. We get that. What we don't get is why you people want to pretend that we really aren't a rival...like we are just a speed bump on your road to a B1G championship.
Dantonio has changed the culture of SOS and mediocrity at MSU and has taken them to a co-B1G championship and back-to-back 11 win seasons...unprecedented in our history....and MSU was 5 seconds away from a 5th straight win over "you people"...which would have MADE history for us in this rivalry.
Congrats on your team's "big" 2 point TD less victory on Saturday. Your team earned you bragging rights for a year. We'll look forward now to reclaiming next season...with AUTHORITY!
I'd say 90 percent of Michigan fans consider MSU a big rival and of the remaining 10 percent, 80 percent of those say that Sparty isn't a rival just to mess with Spartan fans. Sadly, a lot of you take that bait for some reason.
There's a difference between Michigan, the fanbase, and Michigan, the institution. Michigan, the institution, isn't interested in turning this in-state rivalry into what the Michigan - Ohio rivalry was and is today. Do you want to know how I know this? When Michigan State has a DEFINITELY dirty game. Punches were thrown. Necks were twisted. MSU wracked up 124 penalty yards! You all had more penalty yards than passing yards! Mark Dantonio's response to such egregious dirty play was, "it's football". Michigan's coaching staff and players could have gotten upset. No! They remained quiet and humble. When Dantonio stormed the stage during a presentation by Michigan coach, Jeff Hecklinski, and afterward admitted to not know, at all, the protocol of the event... yet still felt compelled to thrust himself into Michigan's allotted presentation time, Michigan could have gotten upset. No! They remained quiet and humble. Going back even further, when Dantonio publicly insulted the physical appears of a 20-year-old student athlete at Michigan by calling Mike Hart "the little brother" because he's only "this tall [gesturing with his hand]" Michigan could have gotten upset. NO! They remained quiet and humble. Michigan, the institution, doesn't want to play these games with Dantonio. We've played games like this with OSU in the past... but not MSU.
If you can't see this... Lord help you.
EDIT: I'm tired of explaining this to people... hopefully this is the last time. Our student section "trickled onto the field" at the end of the game because it's Michigan's 900th win. When we made the game winning tackle on special teams, did fans leave the stands? NO! NOT ONE FAN! After the video that played on the scoreboard that showed all the 100th victories, i.e. 100th win, 200th win, 300th win, ... , 900th win, and their respective scores, only then did the fans start to jump the wall. Get... over... yourselves!

Your rivalry with tO$U isn't 365 days a year pal. It is one game a year..and in football only. YOU PEOPLE "hate" tO$U soooo much that you want them to be undefeated when you play them so you can either win a championship over an undefeated # 1 rival, or else just ruin their season for them. When you play MSU NO WAY do you want us to be undefeated. YOU PEOPLE can't stomach MSU having more success in athletics than the self-proclaimed "leaders and best."
Just the way it really is!

I don't know what people you talk to, but I personally hope Ohio State loses every game that it plays in every sport that it plays. I do not feel the same about Michigan State. Most of the U of M fans/alumni I interact with feel the same way. I do have a couple that hate Michigan State more than they hate the Buckeyes, but they're more of the exception than the rule (at least in my circles) and they are the ones that stayed in Michigan rather than moving or living elsewhere before or after college.
And why you would think that we'd be ok with Ohio State being better than us than Michigan State is beyond me. Part of being an arrogant ass Wolverine is wanting to be better than everyone -- Sparty, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Western Kentucky, the Albuquerque School of Music, UC Santa Cruz, etc. We don't pick and choose who to be arrogant with -- we aren't capable of that.
Please... continue telling me about my opinions. I really appreciate it.
Anybody who says Michigan fans root for Ohio State when they aren't playing Michigan is completely ignorant. There's a reason why we call them the Luckeyes!... and it has nothing to do with the past 10 years when we've been getting smoked by them. It's all the other games that we watch them win on hail mary, come from behind, garbage plays. You've actually projected what we do for MSU onto the Buckeyes!
I was in New Orleans watching the MSU vs Georgia game at a bar on Bourbon Street. I came into that bar with every intention of rooting for the Bulldogs. They're the only team in the SEC, save Florida, who doesn't oversign fergodsakes! When the game went into overtime... I couldn't help but root for little brother. I rooted for you guys to support the Big 10. I didn't even come close to rooting for that team down south.
You have to understand something. What you think we think... it's just not true. Stop deluding yourself. You want us to hate you as much as you hate us. It's not going to happen. Your school and your team just don't matter enough.
Get over "OURSELVES"? Are you kidding me? Your "dirty player" Lewan is an instigator par excellence. Quiet and humble? Really? Bike Hart brought on the whole Dantonio "pride comes before the fall" comment with his smirky comments about letting little brother have the lead and then snatching it back from them. Bo and Lloyd were the biggest public assholes to the media, and on the sidelines...particularly Bo with his tantrums, always whining, always making excuses, never giving any opponent ANY credit when they beat Michigan...it was always what YOU PEOPLE didn't do, not what your opponent did. Now we have the classic line "We didn't play MICHIGAN FOOTBALL" excuse being used by Hoke when YOU PEOPLE lose. OH...I'm sorry...I forgot. YOU PEOPLE have NEVER lost a football game have you? Forces beyond your control always conspired against you...the ref's, the timekeeper, the weather, "crowned" field, "we just ran out of time!", WAAAAAH.
Biggest whiners and crybabies in the NCAA, and since 1950, the most overrated, overhyped, underachieving "powerhouse" football program in the nation.
"Leaders and best?" HAH...you wish. YOU PEOPLE make me sick.
Good to see that talking about this doesn't make you upset or emotional.
The need to feel arrogant at all is the reason most fans/alums I interact with (at least in my circles) feel the need to hate pricks like Michigan fans. Why somebody would feel the justification to be arrogant because they are a fan of a football team (because as we have all been told for over a decade basketball doesn't matter) is beyond me.
