Gotta love Sadler!
Coach K told Curry to make a bunch of contested threes. If Izzo was smarter, he would have told Harris to do the same.
Carrying a case full of dumbfuck is right. Lack of leadership / go to guy led to dumb decisions in clutch situations. That sums it up. I love our team, but finally the lack of quality leadership caught up with us. Look at what Trey Burke did for Michigan. They got outplayed for 90% of that game but he stepped up as a leader. Who was the person for MSU? Appling is not that guy. Nix tried, but doesn't have the full compliment of skills. Dawson is a vocal leader but not a guy who can do much offensively. I would love to see the leadership of the team get handed over to Valentine and Harris next year.
This is all bad karma resulting from Izzo's broken promise to shave his head!
then don't watch. then we'll all be happy. its really a win/win.
BTW, why should we kick it out when we could not hit from outside. Why drive when a Dukie would cut under you put you on the floor and you would be called for a charge? Nix had Plumlee in foul trouble and took it to him but there was always a second defender there.
Let's see if Duke will get those calls Sunday.
Completely agree that Appling, while a good kid we all root for, he isn't the guy to lead MSU to a final four. If MSU is to keep Izzo's streak of getting every 4 yr player to a final four (Payne and Appling up next year) Harris and Valentine have to take control. OSU has that bastard Craft, Burke refuses to loose even when he's taking bad shots and missing, he's still willing his team forward. That's how you win tight games in rugged Big10 and in NCAA. Green had that quality last year, there just weren't talented enough around him for a deeper run. Next year, if there's no early departures, we'll have a chance, if we get SOMEONE who leads!
Thing is Appling...in addition to not being a vocal leader...is playing the point out of necessity. In my opinion it has messed with his overall confidence and game. I'd like to see DV take over at PG allowing Izzo to play a 3 guard lineup of DV, KA, and GH as often as he likes.
Regarding the lack of floor leadership this past season. This team had no Day Day and it really showed in terms of directing the offense. The PG is the QB of the team. He has to run the offense and make sure people are where they are supposed to be on the court. I think DV has a very high basketball IQ...VERY important quality to have in a PG...and can make some outstanding passes. It isn't just about being vocal and getting in guy's faces...it's knowing the other players roles and and getting them where they are supposed to be on the floor when they run their sets.
"I love March!" - Tom Izzo
Exactly right - what worked in 2000 doesn't in today's game. Good interior defense and rebounding still count but you must defend/make 3s. Shooting 37% from the 3 line is equivalent to 50% inside the arch, but Izzo still puts a premium on getting shots inside the key. Look what happened to Kansas - they murdered Michigan in the paint and still lost because a 5'10" guy nailed it from 32 feet. Also you have to understand that the officials in general will reward flopping (i.e. dropping dramatically to to floor on the slightest contact like a European soccer player) and you need to play offense and defense accordingly.
"It's a great day for a ballgame - let's play two"
Agree, for the most part but would say that the reason Kansas lost was because the allowed McGary to score 25 points on layups while their own 7 footer played like he was saving his energy for Sunday.
The college rules need some tweaking...IMO. Blatant flopping needs to be assessed with a technical foul. The 3 point line needs to be moved back to the pro line. Widing the lane might also be a consideration too. As the game stands right now, it's all about making 3's and getting Sportscenter highlight dunks. The medium range and inside power game seem to be yesterday's news along with the football on hardwood mentality of interior D. In the pros it pretty much went out with the Bad Boy Pistons, and in college with the Flintstones 2000 title. Izzo needs to recruit deadeye shooters and he can teach them his defense. Also, an elite program like MSU should not have 4-5 players on the roster who, for all intents and purposes, are MAC level projects who need 3 years in the program just to develop into a serviceable B1G player, or players who are simply just end-of-the-game victory cigar walk-ons.

How do you come up with 4-5? I can think of 2, that's about it.
Izzo won't join the Flopalympics. Won't do it. MSU led the B1G in 3pfg defense this year, too.

Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
I don't want to name names and get banned, but this is the first Izzo team that I've seen in awhile that really quality wise only goes about 7 deep....8 at the very most....and the drop off when those 2-3 reserves come in and have to play extended minutes is glaringly noticeable against the top teams of both the B1G and around the country...IMO.
If we lose to Duke, it means the team has to get smarter. If we had lost to Memphis, I'm sure there would've been a bitchy thread saying we need to get more athletic. If we had made it to the next round and lost to Louisville, we would need to get more aggressive, and if we had made it to the championship game and lost to Syracuse, we'd need to play zone.
Sometimes bad shit happens to a great program. Get over it.

I agree there is no need to name names, but we have 11 guys on scholarship and one of those is redshirting with an injury. So if we go 8 deep that leaves two guys. The rest of the bench are walkons
Ok I was including the walkons in that 4-5 total. Definitely two guys however....and they both get minutes...one significant reserve minutes. Very noticeable drop off in talent when either one of them is in there for extended minutes too. If we can recruit multiple 5 stars to the program, we shouldn't have to settle for 2 star "projects" as well that can't give you productive minutes to rest your top 6 or 7. Again...just my opinion.
Turnovers have been a problem for two years now. Work on that shit.
What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...
Speaking of people who need to get smarter...
