12177 Post before moving here. 10/29/11 will live forever in our hearts (plus 50 votes in the last 3 hours)
I figured out recently that Izzo has won and lost at every level of the NCAA tournament. It would be interesting to figure out how many other coaches could make that claim.
Out of 15 consecutive appearances, the Spartans have made it to the Regional Finals 7 times, losing only once (Texas in '03). Almost half the time we've made it that far.
It seems likely that most other coaches don't have the kind of winning percentage that Izzo has.
One more national title and the guy is way. up. there.
I married a Spartan. Sure wouldn't want to be married to a Wolverine. Especially these days.
He's above Denny Crum 4 show. Wooden will be #1 (although he's a cheat). RMK and Coach K 2 &3. Probably Dean Smith is in there. Maybe Calhoun as well. I think in terms of active, K, Bill Self, Izzo, and Billy Donovan should be in the top 10. Izzo will be 7-8.
Edit: Forgot about Patino. He'll be in there as well.

Boheim aswell. In perspective Izzo is among some elite company but I don't know where I'd rank him until he's done or at least to the years coached comparable to a Coach K, Bob Knight, etc.
Boeheim? 1 championship, 3 Final Fours, and losing in the worst upset in the history of the tournament? Not even close.
2. Coach K
5. Dean Smith
7. Roy Williams
Izzo's the only one on the board without a 2nd title, but he's current, a media darling, and a good way to start the show. I think he's in there over Donovan, Pitino, and the lost-from-memory old-timers with 2 titles.
Bored enough now to start looking things up. Here's the coaches with the most tourney wins withOUT ever making it to the Final Four:
John Chaney (Temple) 23
Gene Keady (Purdue) 19
Tom Davis (Iowa) 18
Bo Ryan (Wisconsin) 16
Lefty Drisell (Maryland) 16
All with winning percentages between 51-58%. The one that stands out to me is Davis, since the others all had many conference championships but didn't put it together for the tourney. Davis on the other hand...did he EVER win the B10? but still had some good runs in the tourney with his full-court press revolving-door bench.
I think you'd have to factor in seeding. It's a lot easier making the FF a bunch of times as a #1 (Coach K). I'd like to see how many times those other guys made the E8/FF as lower seeds.
E8 as a 7 seed in '03
FF as a 5 seed in '05
FF as a 5 seed in '10
Guinness makes you drop mud.
just wondering how Wooden is a cheat?
Yes. Easily right now. Top 5 when done.
Ever heard of Sam Gilbert?
Bobby Knight was a terrible tourney coach post 85. He did all his damage before the tournament resembled what we know it.
umm....he won a national championship in 1987.
something something Orangebloods.
Fine. He did MOST of his damage before 85. He had a PASE of -.25. That's horrendous.
They said all time, not before or after a certain year. Knight will make it.
Does Izzo make Top 10 Tournament Coaches of all time?
Is a five pound robin fat?
Thing is, what is the criteria? Only 2 coaches with 1 title are legitimatly in the discussion (Izzo and Pitino). Numbers are Izzo side, but coaches like Donovan and Calhoun have more titles.
So here's how I imagine the scenario:
There is a 64 team tournament. Each team is equal in all measures - the only difference is coach. If I had to pick a coach to win a title with my life on the line, in the tournament, below are the 10 coaches I'd want in no following order:
The last 3 (especially the last one) was really hard, and I could sub out those guys any minute. The first 7 I'm totally sold on.
Izzo is going to win another NC this year, so the # of titles will be moot soon.
Izzo's 2012/2013 Spartan Dogs are grinders.
Its five o'clock somewhere.
i don't need no stinkin' survey or poll to tell me that Izzo kicks butt!!
Technically . . . okay, hyper-technically . . . Izzo has never won or lost a "play-in" game in Dayton.
Very interesting topic/question by OP. Don't have time myself right now, but maybe someone can look up Tourney win percentage? Say with a minimum of 10 appearances...
What? No love for Coach Cal???
