I've yet to this day heard an explanation from anyone on why a loss the last conference game only counts as half a loss opposed to every other conference game that counts as a full loss.
How in the world is IU losing @UM, if it happened, a backdoor title for MSU? @UM was IUs second toughest conference game, and it happened to be their last game of the year not their 4th or 8th or 15th. 5 losses is 5 losses is 5 losses, correct? I guarantee you 100% if UM won, the term backdoor title would have been banned from Izzo's and the players' mouths. It's easier to play the holier than thou card once a title is no longer on the line, firing up the troops with the ole we don't need a backdoor title we come through the front door. That's great and all, but it means nothing. Just like the term backdoor title.
MSU went 3-0 vs Wisky and Ill--IU went 0-2. So it's a backdoor title because IU beat us twice? Would it have been a backdoor title for OSU also? Even though they just won at IU?
I don't get it. The term backdoor title is a faux term used to patronize fans. You either earn it or you don't. One game just because it's the last game of conference play doesn't count more than the other games, yes?
You lost me there
Coming from a poster who uses a screen name and photo of the ultimate slacker your views come as no surprise
yep: the dude doesn't abide
MSU had its chances it could have beaten UM, IU or OSU and this would all be moot. I'm sorry but I can't get excited about a "championship" where a 1/3 of the teams in the league win it. Getting pretty close to every kid gets a tropyh soccer there.
Pretty sure he wouldnt have rejected or talked down about the shared title if Morgan could have made his put back.
He's just being positive about the hand he was delt ... Get over it.
Did somebody say "flat out wrong?"
Mr 5 star Payne is playing like a low level 3 start recruit. Nix is horrendous at every facet of the game. Gauna is a complete stiff. Cos
He's got to say that stuff...he's the coach speaking to a team that didn't win a title because some idiots at Michigan forgot what was on the line in the last 30 seconds of their game.
His tune would have been different had that ball fallen in Ann Arbor.
We had a chance against IU at home and lost. Went 0-2 against them. Couldn't knock the front door down. No biggie.
What were Izzo's comments about a backdoor title?
Ahh yes, classic rcmb. Instead of answering easy questions I posed, you attack the messenger.
Please answer my question...how is losing a game at the end of the year only half a loss? Bueller? Bueller?
Yes, Izzo was flat out wrong using the faux term backdoor title, get over it. I highly doubt anyone will even attempt to tell me how I'm wrong, because Im not.
Of course he was right. MSU went 2-4 against the three other contenders. IU went 5-1.
Right... and Izzo is saying that this team didn't earn it. Indiana earned the Big 10 title when they came into the Breslin and beat our team.
There are still bigger goals that this team can accomplish.
MSU=outright champ| Wis=2 yrs|OSU=5 yrs| UM=11 yrs|Ill=13 yrs|NW=19 yrs| PSU=20 yrs| Iowa=29 yrs|Ind=69 yrs|Min= 73 yrs| Pur=84 yr
So losing a conference game at the end of year only counts as half a loss, while losing any of the previous 17 times is a full loss? Gotcha.
Also, why couldn't IU beat Wisky or Illinois? MSU went 3-0 against those teams, IU went 0-2.
I'll hang up and listen.
But they didn't. Indiana lost to Illinois and Wisky. Lost at home twice. You can't cherry pick two games during an 18 game schedule as reasons for or against.
If UM won, would OSU have had a backdoor title? Or MSU wouldn't have as much claim to the title as UM or OSU because they beat IU once while MSU didn't, despite the fact you ignore all the other games?
LSJ sort of agrees in this article today.
SHHHHHH!! Dont you know, if you lose a game at the end of the year it only counts as half a loss, even if its your toughest or second toughest game on your conference slate!
So the purpose of this thread is to prove that someone else's opinion on a hypothetical that didn't take place was wrong?
Your Izzo threads have an obvious troll pattern. Just stop.
Let's face it - the speech would have been MUCH different if U-M had won. Izzo was just trying to spin the fact that we didn't get the title.
Can someone post what Izzo said? I'm still confused about what the OP is even upset about.
Ill never understand the backdoor comment either.
Posted this before but everyones schedule is different. What if iu played at um past week and lost and every team was 12-5 before yestersays game? Would we still have back-doored into a title? It just so happens iu didnt play at um until the last game of the season. IUs schedule was completely back-loaded.
I realize we lost to iu twice but iu also didnt have to play at WI. A team they lost to at home. MSU and OSU are the only two teams that played the other top five twice.
What did people expect Izzo to say? Had iu lost he wouldnt have mentioned a back-door title as wouldve said it was an 18 game schedule and we earned it through 18 games. You adjust your comments as to the outcome of the iu v um game.

Exactly - What's he supposed to have said? Given the circumstances, that's what the fans and players wanted to hear. If Michigan had won, he would not have said, "well, I hate winning the BIG10 by coming in the back door." He would have celebrated the title and how hard it is to win the BIG10 Regular season over a brutal 18 game schedule.
edit: Looks like GreenMonet and I were on the same thought process

Does it count half? Or does it count more?
You seem confused.
No one knows what the hell you mean by half a loss...that's not a real term.
We don't poop on ourselves against Minnesota we share the title with IU.
It's a backdoor title because MSU had little to no control over whether they shared it or not and were praying for a last game upset to sneak in. We had 4 chances (I'll assume we never would have won at IU despite it being close) and we fucked every single one of them up. We didn't earn it and wouldn't have earned it if we lucked up and UM has pulled off the upset.
No one is saying MSU sucks or anything, we just couldn't get it done this year in the biggest games. Lotta ball left.
No, its the fact that Izzo was wrong...say it with me Fletch....I know you can...Izzo was wrong. I know he has never made a mistake in his life, but him saying how if UM won it would have been a backdoor title is disingenuous, patronizing, and pretty much condescending towards our own fan base. It's one of the "How stupid do you think we are, coach?"
I know I know, forming your own opinions on an internet message board is truly shameful,,,especially when you're right. (I've yet one single person ITT rebut my original question on how it's a backdoor title, yet I've managed to get you all hot and bothered, lol.)
There is no such thing as a backdoor title, and as much as you don't want to believe it....a loss the last game of the year still does, in fact, count as one (1) whole loss...just like it does at the start of the conference. I just checked with my Big Ten source, he did indeed confirm UM has 6 losses and not 5.5 in conference play.
