Minny hasn't advanced past the first weekend of the big dance since 1997 (which they had to vacate). Thats just a bit better than Michigan standards.

It's easy to understand they'd like to be better. What's not easy to understand is who they think they're going to get. They fired a guy who made it to the tournament (something 279 coaches can't say this year), and who by all accounts did everything the right way. And they paid him a middle-of-the-road salary for the Big Ten. Does Minnesota think they're going to strike gold and get the next Brad Stevens or Shaka Smart?
You got it.
How is firing Tubby Smith going to change this? He's a class act and a fine coach hamstrung by a poor program with bad facilities.

Mine as well try SOMETHING else. I was just pointing out that its going to be tough to find a decent coach like Shaka Smart to come to Minny.
Thank you, Denicos.
Everyone has higher expectations than mediocrity and it doesn't have to be based on anything.
Is this supposed to be a 1:1 comparison? Izzo has done more in 16 years than Minnesota basketball has ever accomplished.
Calmer than you are
How does a coaching vacuum at Minnesota help them for Jones? Unless they go out and hire a huge name which they're not likely to do, it probably hurts their chances. Besides who can they hire that's better than Izzo?
Flip Saunders was at Tyus Jones' game with Izzo the other night. That would be coldhearted if they give him the job and he ends up with Tyus.
Smith’s contract comes with a $2.5 million buyout — a number that jumped from $1.5 million after he signed an extension last summer shortly after Norwood Teague took over as Minnesota’s athletic director.
Tubby Smith has reportedly been fired as Gophers mens basketball coach, CBSsports
They should of invested that 2.5 million into their program.
Correct. Called Tubby because as a small kid he spent so much time in the bathtub. I think it was his grandma that nicknamed him Tubby when he was very little and it stuck
Agreed. However, I think that if you look at the history of Michigan State basketball, we have a lot more there than a team like Minnesota. By the time Izzo retires, you'll be looking at 40 years as a quality basketball program (with a few hiccups under Jud). MSU will have been an absolutely elite program for longer than recruits have been alive. We have state-of-the-art facilities and boosters that pay for things like Izzo's super van and private plane for recruiting missions (and as long as the AD does not screw up future coaching hires, I highly doubt people are going to close their wallets the second Izzo leaves).
So yes, we're going to be a spoiled and entitled fan base. But there's a reasonable basis for that.
My love for Izzo is boundless. And he can cry for whomever he wishes. I just choose not to cry for a multimillionaire 61-year old who has had many many wonderful days in the sun.
Only someone from the People's Republic of Minnesota would think that this is an attractive job opening.
This is actually a really good point. It seems like Minnesota (and some of these other schools) are looking for their Izzos. Well, there aren't so many of him just growing on trees.
...maybe on their "superior" facilities? ;)
Except, you don't find an Izzo, you grow your own.
Oh man, here comes Jabari and Reggie Theus part II. (last year with Illinois)
As far as Tubby being let go. If your assistant coach and son gets a DUI, it might as well be you getting the DUI. Add in Mbakwe, it's the same kind of rational you could use to fire Jim Schwartz. Minnesota's new AD wants his guy, even if he's not as good as Tubby.
It screams AD ego/wanting to put stamp on the program, but Tubby left the door wide open for it happen.
Plus, there is every expectation that Izzo will hand pick a successor or at least have a very influential say. That is huge for a program.
Consider the source but:
Terry Foster @TerryFoster971 1m
Tubby Smith said he has not been told he was fired as Minnesota head basketball coach
Stop with the Flip talk, he is working with a group to buy the Timberwolves.
35,600 posts and counting since 09-09-2002. tRCMB Dead Pool Commissioner.
Wonder if his job would have been secured with a win yesterday
