This victory was without the contributions of Travis Trice (only true PG on the team) or Matt Costello.
Yep. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Costello brings to the table.
These next 10 or so games until conference play starts will be really important for all of the freshman. We definitely got 2 of our toughest games out of the year early and now is time for guys like Gauna, Costello, Byrd, and Kearney to see if these guys are capable of contributing in the big ten.
One is a freshman and the other averaged 4 pts and 1 ast last season. I understand your point, but nobody thinks that we're a final product at this point.
As a side note, all you you that think appling isn't the best candidate to run this offense are out of your minds. Valentine and Trice are great contributors in the role they are in now. If you notice we often have to set picks while bringing the ball up when valentine and and trice are bringing it up against pressure. For anybody that thinks that is ideal for running an offense...I don't know what to say to you.
Yeah, it's not like a freshman would've done anything out there.
Gary and Denzel
Hate to say it, but Russell is in danger of being passed over in the rotation on this team. Harris and Dawson are obviously the wings. And then you have Valentine providing solid minutes and Kearney has been given time as well. Izzo seems to want Byrd to get into the swing of things by making him the first sub off the bench, but he has yet to impact a game in his collegiate career. We could really use a dead-eye big 3-point shooter, but he needs to have that killer conscious.
Byrd will get his chance against the lesser competition to come in the next 10 games. If he can't bring it during this upcoming stretch, he'll be riding pine. If he can become a reliable 3 pt shooter, he'll be a valuable asset.
At this point, it looks like Byrd is headed for an Austin Thornton-type career. Turned out OK for AT, but I expected more out of Byrd.
Yeah, I'm thinking these next 10 games are huge for Kearney, Byrd, Costello, and Gauna. Will help them define their roles for the remainder of the season. We already know more or less that Appling, Nix, Payne, Dawson, Harris, Valentine, and Trice will be in the thick of the rotation.
I could see Trice and Costello pushing for a lot of minutes and, possibly, starting minutes.
Where the hell is Costello anyway? Is he hurt? Did I miss some injury news? Just wondering why we haven't seen him on the court yet.
Severely bruised pelvis. Those are painful & very limiting.
Trice is not going to start.
Wait until teams start to play zone against us. That's when Byrd will get his chance to show what he can contribute.
Also there are times we need someone directing traffic for guys uncertain where they are supposed to be. Thornton did that often last year.
AT ABSOLUTE WORST... Trice keeps Appling well rested, Ditto for Costello keeping Payne's lungs in check and Nix a little fresher. Also it will help move guys into more 'normal/comfortable' positions/rotations/groupings.
I think we know Costello is a beast effort wise, and can stick the J a little bit.
Guana fucking brought it yesterday, quite frankly in a way I didn't think he could, but I still think Costello will be a huge upgrade as he's more versatile and better around the rack and off the bounce.
Wow was Withey an epic pussy or what? I'd play against that guy as our 'marquis opponents' stud C any day of the week. He's pillowy soft and has pretty crappy timing on shot block attempts for such a 'feared' shot blocker.
At best Trice helps us stretch the floor, sets up some lobs (Which he's shown he's very good at), continues making Dawson the weapon he can be due to their long standing chemistry, and helps Valentine run the point at times.
And Costello gives us the rebounding uber beast we haven't really had since Roe was healthy (for that one week that one time I think) and gives us some poor man's (but bigger) Tyler Hansboro stuff.

Marriage is like flying with kids, if the flight had 500 connections, never ended, Ted Striker were your pilot and you ate the fish.
Yeah, that Louisville center last year was 10x the shotblocking/defensive presence Withey was.
I honestly have huge amounts of empathy because we are asking him to play the 'draymond' role a bit, and he has like ZERO experience to fall back on...
That being said, I'd like to see his and Guana's minutes vanish as quickly as possible and go to Kearney, Valentine, and Costello (If he looks anything like what I think he will).
If Gauna continues to play like he did yesterday, he is deserving of a good amount of minutes, regardless how everyone else plays.
I really hate saying it because I like Trice, but I have an idea of what he brings to the floor already and I almost want to see Valentine as the backup point due to the court vision that everyone raves about. Trice (and Appling) have difficulty working in that offense. It feels like they have to dribble around a ton because they can never find any way to get the ball to anyone. I need to see how Costello looks at the Div-1 level, but I already want him taking Nix minutes away due to stronger hands and better rebounding instincts that I saw in HS. Nix lets a few bounce off his hands and into the opposition's every game like clockwork. He's a load to move around in the paint though.
Certainly if he's going to shoot 100%, he can keep playing.
Note that he did COMPLETELY shit himself on Friday when came into the game and spazzed out again on the first play yesterday, but somebody somehow caught the errant pass he threw saving his ass from probably getting the hook back to the bench right away.
I was extremely impressed with him catching the ball and finishing smartly around the rack. Impressive catch especially getting bumped.
I really thought he was GVSU bound after the UConn game, as in he could never hack it. Now I think he can have role a bit like Ballinger on the 2000 and 2001 teams. 5 fouls and stick a J and play OK D.
it's true, just ask my wife.
Sorry, I'll be gentler next time.
I tried that once and she wouldn't answer my calls anymore.
Keep going balls deep.
