Fact: We recruit against ND, UM and OSU. It doesn't get more difficult than that. Now that each of those programs have stabilized, they are starting to consistently beat us in recruiting battles and it will not end any time soon. We are very quickly going to return to a mid-level B10 power if nothing changes. That is a reality.
Option 1: Try to expand our recruiting into places like Missouri, NJ, Fla and Georgia.
Problem: We've tried that before. It doesn't work. Like it not, the MSU brand doesn't have enough cache to pull top level talent from states outside of our region.
Option 2: Rebrand. Go all in with Nike. Become Oregon. Who the F cared about Oregon before they did the uniform thing? They created an identity for themselves and now they are running with USC and they sunk Wash and UCLA in the process.
We have a bad ass logo. Our uniforms for the last two UM games were fricken' awesome. Let's do that every week. We have a good enough team to win for the next few years. Let's win; and let's look like a modern, confident, cutting-edge program that has attitude while doing it.
Listen, we can't beat OSU, UM and ND on their terms. That is, we can't beat them when it comes to perceived "tradition" (I think it's BS, but whatever, it's the reality we face). We need an identity that separates us from the triumvirate. We've done a lot of great things with Sparty and the in-game atmosphere. It's time to go all-in. We've got the perfect AD to pull this off. Take his shackles off and let him rebrand this program for the 21st century.
That is all.

Turn in your Spartan card you fucking woman.
Vim -- noun: robust energy and enthusiasm : VITALITY
You go all in Oregon style and still go 7-5 then we become a national laughing stock. Lets just stick to being a basketball school.
Now knowing what 1995 is like all over again! Thank you 247 technology!!
Option 3: OP goes and fucks himself.

I want us to go Oregon. Not because I think it will effect the program much if at all, just because Oregon is bad ass.
The problem, being bad ass is expensive.
If we turn into Oregon we'll gain all the bandwagon fans. UofO is like the scUM of the state of Oregon. fyi...I live in Oregon.
Can you name a nationally relevant program that doesn't have bandwagon fans?
Behind every successful man is a woman, behind her is his wife.
Yeah, do you really think even every MSU fan is an alum? Because they ain't.
Most high school football players are bandwagon fans.
Being like Oregon requires having an alum with ridiculous amounts of cash to throw at whatever the AD asks for without questioning it. We have Broad, Gores, and Gilbert (you could include Sam Raimi in this even though he left after 3 semesters), but none of them seem to be interested in MSU athletics. It sucks because there is a noted correlation between athletic success and enrollment applications.
This is a Pallas’s cat. Their round pupils give them an odd human quality. They disturb me...deeply.
Do we have that kind of money? Does the field need to be blue?
In order to go Oregon MSU needs $$$$$$
We should paint the field our school colors!!!!1!1!!!!
I'd donate some serious cash if Hollis paints a compelling vision for how to use it.
Best post I have ever seen on this board.
Just start paying players. Ole Miss, Oregon, Auburn, Clemson, USC....... As long as you are smart about it, it shouldn't be a big deal.

"Put your mother in a straight-jacket you punk ass white boy." ~ Mike Tyson
I only care about Michigan State.
I hear you. But at this point I don't care.
Actually, I think what would happen is we'd get young fans "jumping on the band wagon". Our shit would sell, I guarantee you that.
We have a great theme to build around - Spartans. I mean, come on. That is a smart, creative person's dream mascot for building a bad ass image for a football program? Certainly 10x easier than working with Ducks.
The old stuffy types will stick with the traditional powers. But everything is changing and it is changing quickly. Sticking to a tradition is an inefficiency for MSU right now. It is a competition we can't win. As much it sucks, the truth is that no matter what we do ND will beat us in game of "tradition" each and every single time. It is time to shift gears. The retro look is about the jump the shark anyways. It's time for MSU to be radically modern. Better yet, radically futuristic...I mean that is where the future is after all (rim shot)...

If forum members donated $1 to the football athletic fund for every bitchy post on tRCMB we would get there in no time.
So what are we supposed to do again? Get funky uniforms and all these players would come?
Even if we don't get new designed unis, we need to at least get the new Nike jersey template they use for the NFL. Our stuff is starting to look cheap next even next to teams like Purdue and Northwestern.
Plus Nike gave UCF our "Spartan font".
It's a nice premise but Oregon didn't become "Oregon" because they were willing to wear goofy uniforms every week. They became what they are because the founder and CEO of the largest, hippest, and most influential shoe company in the world is an Oregon alum and built his company in their backyard. Oh and he also donates zilly dollars to their athletic endeavors.
