The only reason State lost was because Curry went off. That's it. Free throws effectively even. Not a lot of turnovers. Outrebounded them. Curry goes off and Harris was 2-11. Can't do much about that.
NCAA Men's Basketball Box Score: Final statistics from the Michigan State Spartans vs. Duke Blue Devils game played on March 29, 2013
You can't put enough value on dead-aim shooters in this game. They'll rip your hearts out.
More too it than that. The 3 point % hurts and 3-10 for Nix on post shots is not acceptable.
Agree, except there is something you can do. He's their best scorer but he's pretty soft. You have to chase and bump off the ball so he doesn't get those first few shots that put him in a rhythm. For whatever reason Harris didn't bring that on D tonight. Maybe the thinking was that in the big arena Curry wouldn't shoot so well, but after he hit his first 2, y'know commit to stopping him. It took about half the game for that stop-at-all-costs D to kick in.
Plumlee/Kelly double team is too much for any big man in the country to handle. What Nix did wrong was not looking for shooters like he usually does. He had Harris wide open a couple of times and forced a shot.
Curry 29, Suliman 16. We shut them down in the paint. But they beat our guards up. Duke sent a message with that flagrant foul on Nix, if we drove to the hoop we would get fouled hard. We went inside but Harris could not knock enough threes down for our inside out game to be affective. It happens.

Curry runs off of multiple screens real well like Reggie miller and rip Hamilton used to.
Harris and Payne really struggled on the offensive end. Duke really played well on the defensive end and was better than MSU which is why they won.
There is a reason why MSU struggled shooting the ball. Also Nix really killed MSUs half court offense.
He pretty well got in the way and clogged up driving lanes and cutting lanes.
Almost all of sulaimons points came off free throws
Kelly set a lot of screens that would make an offensive line coach happy. Harris did do better for the final 15 minutes. But then they just called him for touch fouls as well.
True. And our guards were the guys getting decked. When Duke fouls they put you on the ground. That is bullshit!

In other words, scoring helps in basketballing.
Curry got them their separation and they basically held us off with free throws from there.
That's really it.
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
can't have Payne 3-10, Nix 3-10, and Harris 2-11
Needed one of them to step up with Appling.

Nix should've been looking for Payne, or simply powering up for shots. The Creighton center had Plumlee in foul trouble, so why couldn't Nix? He had the move to his left shoulder open a few times and was too timid to try. Too indecisive.
It took us WAY too long to pay better attention to Curry. By the time we did, his confidence was sky-high.

We actually started the 2nd half well but Curry made huge shots to counter everything we did. We outplayed them as a whole in the first few minutes of the 2nd half but had nothing to show for it cause Curry was lights out. It was a sinking feeling to battle so hard on one end to score and then just have Curry raining 3s on the other.
To be honest I'm surprised we didn't lose by 25. We looked whipped most of the game.
I think Harris was not ready for the physical nature of Duke's defense. If a team did that in the Big Ten, 11 other teams would play them the same way. The flagrant on Nix was no accident. First time he touched the ball he got horse collared. Duke, UNLV for rich kids!
You really think we would have been allowed to bump him off the ball? Please.
Yeah but three-point perimeter defense is always a problem for State. it has kept teams that didn't deserve to be in the game, in the game.
MSU led the B1G in 3 point FG defense this year, Nucky.
Yeah but how many big 3-point shots have opponents made on MSU this year and over the past several years? Quite a bit.

Not this year. Your team was o for 12 at Crisler and not much better at Breslin. Wisconsin was awful too.
They had their moments but I have watched every game, you cannot tell there were games when MSU didn't let the opposition hang around with 3-pters.
Once he got going Curry hit at least 2-3 very tough shots with Harris all over him.
