Its pretty much along the lines of Memphis in the past with Conference USA.
We could debate if Gonzaga should/will be a No. 1 (and Parrish does in the video below), but I'm more interested in correlation and association with like-ilk teams, one specifically being the 2007-08 Memphis Tigers. If Gonzaga does fall on the top line come Selection Sunday, it will be the first No. 1 seed from a non-major conference since that Memphis club, which should've nearly won it all.
The numbers may show the teams to be on the same linear trajectory, but I'd take that Memphis team by 15-20 over this Gonzaga team. Just IMO.
Just by eye test, I think the 04 St. Joe's team and the 08 Memphis team were better than this Gonzaga team in terms of recent mid majors getting #1s.
I'd take that bet.... even if the Zags get a number one seed - and they may - they're not going to lose to a number 16 seed.
Here's the deal. They're not the best team in the country. But they're definitely top ten material. They're fast, physical, and have good guard play and post play. While their SOS is not good, that's not necessarily a reflection on them - just on their schedule. I can see where their SOS could have been significanlty higher and their record the same. They're just a good team.
I'm no bracketologist, but I see them as a pretty sure bet to the Sweet 16. Elite 8 is 50/50, because anything can happen after the first round. I don't see them getting to the final four though....
Spartans ...committed to bring Paul Bunyan home in 2013.
How amazing would that be for them to go in the history books in both Football (Appalacian State) and Basketball to have the greatest upsets.
So your argument for Gonzaga not beating anyone is showing that Fla didn't beat anyone either? I think Fla is a weak 1 seed as well.
Oklahoma and St Marys aren't even ranked. The other two are barely in the top 15. Again, give me the Zags best 3-5 wins. It's just so weak. Definitely NOT worthy of a one seed. Maybe not even a two seed.
Totally agree. Just saying its along those lines. They're in the same hmm they look decent but just beat up on crap in conference
Fuck the RPI, fuck the BPI, etc. MSU has wins over Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Ohio State. All of which are better wins than Gonzaga's best win over Kansas State. They got absolutely run out of the gym by Illinois. It was a complete blowout. Illinois could have easily won that game by 40 if they didn't take their foot off the gas.
Gonzaga has good computer metrics because they played a bunch of okay teams. West Virginia, Clemson, Baylor, Washington State, St Mary's, etc. The only win that I would even consider quality is Kansas State and that team would finish 7th in the B1G.
I would put Gonzaga at best at a 4 seed.
