As i stated after the B10CG last year, STATE should take the '80's Miami (FLA) approach to the game.
I am talking complete lack of care for what the rules are. Talk Shit, Late Hits, Head Slaps, Hit Lists, Bounties, Celebration Dances. The whole 9 yds.
The positives far outweigh the negatives.
Press or other programs and fans give negative reviews and opinions of staff/ players/ and fan base. (this already exists)
Refs will come into a game with predetermined agenda. (already exists)
Prepares players the wrong way for life or career after football. (wrong)
Penalties that cost you the W . (already happens)
Bad image for program. (who gives a fuck what others think)
Kids and Players would love it. Recruiting would be trough the roof if you told these kids it was a free for all on the field. Let em dance on the sidelines, after big plays, do what ever.
Far more entertaining brand of football.
With a loose atmosphere comes a more relaxed approach to the game. A mentality that you can play with anybody.
Style of play distracts the other team. Once they see their opponent doesnt give a shit and know they have to watch their knees, focus is lost.
It is a big middle finger to anybody not on board. Like a club you distain but deep down long to be a part of.
I would be entertained.
STATE is missing the boat to become THEEE renegade program of this era. This approach should be nurtured, not neglected.
I dont agree with the above, but on the whole I have always liked and wanted this. However, I also agree with GreenAllDay that we don't have the talent to do it. In the '91 Cotton Bowl, Miami was penalized 16 times for 200+ yards, and they won 46-3. We can't even beat Iowa at home in a game that our Defense held Iowa to a 3 and out on 8 of their first 9 drives.
Miami had the advantage of recruiting in south florida...not Michigan.
I know STATE wouldnt rack up the W's like the Canes. I said their APPROACH should be used.
I think players would like it, as a fan i would like it. I would watch a .500 team every year and be more entertained than I was for the past 25 yrs watchin the same shit.
If coach took this to heart, the players and recruits would soon follow. one would build on the other.
why down vote? explain?
I thought the exact same thing!!!
We're going to need a hell of a lot more coke, hookers and warm weather to pull this off.
I guess you enjoy being a MSU fan and gettin the shaft with nuthin to show for it.
CFB is a business now, the entertainment business.
When you grow up you will realize it.
I dont know man, an attitude is a powerful thing. The kids are being pulled every which way with the intentions of others since they were marked as tip top ball players. Let the kids be kids, fuck around. Be a program with a bit of their identity on it.
This was not meant as a serious response, and by no means do I want to engage in a discussion with you.
you have to be prejudice to even come up with that shit. A thug is a malcontent, bottom line you fool.
i dont care if the entire team was lilly white, I'd want that mentality.
"I love March!" - Tom Izzo
why should I expect original thought out of this fan base.
once you give a crap what others think you are a lost soul.
keep in line, bend over and take it fellas.
probably being down voted by people that don't even go to games
Did you even watch the ESPN documentary "The U"? Yes, Miami embraced the attitude and had awesome teams but the consequences were ugly and they still have not recovered to be a consistent top 20 team. Not to mention that attitude is revolting. No matter what you want, MSU is a class program and in the B1G you don't recruit marginal students like that and survive. Look what happened to tOSU who got off easy.
the consequences were from NCAA violations and had nothing to do with on the field play. Who said anything about illegal recruiting or NCAA violations?
How stupid are you? They recruited marginal student/athletes and these players got the program in trouble not to mention the idea of recruiting this sort of player to begin with. In general it was a renegade program that was out of control and came close to getting the death penalty.
All I have addressed is on the field play.
I don't know where this content of marginal/ student athlete comes from or racist interps of words that are from some fictional dictionary.
The on the field mentality i suggested has noting to do with ANY of the responses givin in this thread.
15 yds flags on the field dont mean a jailhouse full of players, at least to me. you have to be prejudice to put those together.
Have you seen the state of University of Miami football nowadays? Why would you want to be anything like them?
I'm leaning this way. You know your assignment. No more letting up wondering if some tiptoeing qb is going to go out of bounds or not, lay his ass out. Throw the flag and go try it again MFer!!!!!!
Since we are going to get raped by the officials anyway, we might as well enjoy it.
Please God, make it stop.
Don't post poop!
I get tired of people downvoting because somebody expresses an opinion that they don't agree with. It hinders discussion. Save the downvotes for when people are a-holes.
I think you have an interesting point. A nasty hit by Big Will or Denicos or Lewis will get a 15 yarder even if it is legal, based on reputation alone. You are suggesting turning that into a positive, and I appreciate it. The biggest reason I would disagree is that I don't want that attitude to be connected to the basketball team. While tough, Izzo is (rightfully so) thought of as the cleanest big time coach, by far, in the game. This helps our national identity and recruiting.
Also, I agree the football tam doesn't have the talent right now.
If we can trick Coach Krzyzewski into saying his own name backwards, perhaps he will be pushed back to the fifth dimension
There's a difference between swagger and outright thuggery.
Look at Pete Carroll's teams from 2002-2008. Those teams defined swagger. They'd kick the shit out of you, show you up, jump up and down on the sidelines, get in your face, and strut around like they owned the place. It got in other team's heads and was very effective.
They didn't take out guys at the knees, hit them at full speed out of bounds when the play way over or any of that other crap.
