This. I thought when they made the hire it was absurd. We certainly do have a lack of talent based on the other teams and where we should be. However, we also have one of 2 things:
1) a team full of players who dont listen or can't be coached
2) a coach who doesn't know how to coach the players
To give up so many shots to a team like PSU is just ludicrous. Our power play is so horrendous we can't even gain the zone most of the time(which is a coaching issue). It happens game after game after game and it isn't addressed or fixed. You don't have to have loads of talent to set up a PP. you just need everyone on the same page. I guarantee you with nothing other than 22 years of playing experience I could get this team set up in the zone on the PP with 2 simple adjustments unless they are flat out uncoachable. It's going to be a long few years but at this point we have no option other than to give the guy a fair shot and hope he proves he can be the guy.
But why then has Ferris State been better than MSU the past few years?
50 shots on goal. Well, I'm off to go vomit with rage.
And, kids, for the love of god, never do the wave at Munn.

Two things about Comley's recruiting: Technically, it wasn't bad. He could always get big names to soft verbal to Michigan State. Unfortunately, in regard to recruiting, Comley was stuck in the 1990s. He never defended his recruits against overtures from the CHL and rival college teams. Toward the end, you could build an all-star team from the number of kids Comley let go.
Second, Comley always preferred to recruit small, fast kids. The quintessential Rick Comley freshman is an 18-year-old 5-foot-7 speedster with good stick skills. He loved going after those kids. And, the thing is, in the 1990s, you could win national championships with 18 undersized, fast, young, pesty players. But, as other teams recruited bigger and stronger players, Comley never evolved with the game. Toward the end, when teams like Miami or Notre Dame came to town, it would literally be men against boys.
I can never hate someone who brought a national title to MSU as he did in 2007.
Haters gonna hate!
Ferris has had a lot of 20-21 year old freshmen. Mason, them Comley and now Anastos haven't wanted to recruit that way.
Bob Daniels (MSU '82-Accounting) has been at Ferris for 21 years. Drew Famulak has been at Ferris with Daniels for 20 years and has been Assoc. HC for 9 years. They know what they are selling and have been doing it for a long time. I wished MSU would have made a run at these guys but Hollis went in a different direction.
Rick Comley is a nice person and a coach who has won two National Championships but he was 56 when Mason hired him so in 4 years the whispers start about his age and when he might retire. That hurt. Add on he wanted to play a style of hockey that required players he couldn't get to MSU.
Anastos is about 4-5 years younger than Daniels. He's been a good administrator but right now he and his assistants are not seeing the recruiting success Mason saw coming in in 1979. But then He was the hot young coach. WCHA teams, ND, Miami didn't have superior facilities and there were fewer schools playing D1 hockey.
This is a bad year. PSU knew MSU only has 3-5 players who are true scoring threats. MSU doesn't have a pair of block out the sun players on defense to help their goalies. All PSU needed to do was hope for an MSU screw up in their own end and they got it. When your team can't score and can't win face offs consistently there is littleroom for error.
Yet to see anyone say they hate comley. It was just time to go.
Hockey threads are starting attract the usual self loathers looking to rejoice in a down year. When these dozen or so freshman mature and the results bear that then I suspect they'll move on to trolling women's underwater basket weaving or some other down program.

I think it is a tad early to decide on Anastos's recruiting so far. Recruiting for hockey is significantly different then football or basketball. I feel he will be able to get some bigger name kids to commit moving forward, but it is not an overnight process.
Just got home from the game, my first MSU hockey game this year. I had fun but this is the worst hockey I've seen from an MSU team, I don't follow it religiously but do try to watch a few games a year.
The passing was just not crisp at all, the team was not aggressive and seemed intimidated once PSU started coming back.
I was at MSU when Amo retired and Mason took over. He got out of the blocks a lot faster than Anastos and his staff. I agree Anastos has to get some traction but we 30 years later its a far different landscape. More programs better scouting/recruiting and lastly Munn has gone from showcase to ho-hum
Comley took over a perennial top 10 in the country hockey powerhouse and turned it into a bottom of the league also-ran. He also destroyed a loyal fan base that sold out over 300 straight games over close to 20 years. He was a disaster, plain and simple.

His recruiting was far less than mediocre. Still paying for it. Couldn't capitalize on the NC and yes he is a good guy
Yea. I was being I generous because T-Amateur thought I was being too mean to RC.
Why is it ok for you to rip on hockey recruiting but it's off limits to rip on the mediocre football recruiting? Go Three Star U.

I've been reading a lot of these comparisons of Anastos to Mason. Mason's worst season at MSU was his second season (12-22-2 / 7-20-1 WCHA). This is Anastos' second season and he has a better winning percentage this season so far than Mason did in his second season. Anastos posted a winning record in his first season and Mason did not (14-24-0). I'm not sure how you see Mason's staff getting out of the blocks a lot faster than Anastos and company. I would say they both inherited similar teams, recruits.
Penn State likes to shoot the puck. Of their DI games this season, they've only been held under 30 shots twice. They had 37 SOG against Ohio State. Yes, Penn State is a new varsity program. A new varsity program with $80 million in one donation alone. If someone gives Anastos $80 million, MSU will blow ND, Miami, and NoDak away.
Everyone including Anastos knew this was going to be a rebuilding year. I didn't think this team could finish above 7th or 8th in the CCHA before the season started. This team will be better.
Some of the top college prospects and their future schools. Spartans?
Both of those lists are undrafted NHL prospects and not the top college prospects. MSU had four players on the first list last year. Of that group, three are freshmen this season and only Mackenzie Maceachern has yet to join the team. Freshman Matt DeBlouw was on the USHL top prospects roster last year.
With only five seniors this year, I wasn't expecting big names on the 2013 lists. Maceachern and Cox are pretty solid recruits.
You're even further out of your element here than you are with other relevant team sports.
Stop trolling you old chicken little, is this how you want to be spending your time before Alzheimer's sets in fully?
Comley is gone and Dantonio isn't. You're infuriated by that. suck it. Bobby Williams and JLS are gone, you're screwed.
I was at the game last night and its obvious that other than the frost goalie and maybe the Chelios kid there's little talent on this team. There's no offense at all and the team is undersized. I'm sure Anastos will bring in talent but this year is a wash.
