Mick McCabe is one of the people that knew all about Ed Martin funneling money to Michigan basketball recruits in the early 1980s, just like the Michigan athletic department knew about it and facilitated it for years in order to have better basketball teams.
I am truly amazed at how Michigan has been able to get the media on board with mostly ignoring the largest and longest running NCAA violations in history that involved the Detroit mob and illegal gambling across Detroit auto plants, and now even has some in the media talking about forgiving what happened. That is some powerful influence right there. I would think that the media would've loved to have investigated and told this fascinating tale, but the best story was written by McCabe in 1985 and then everyone backed off.

Fraud Five/Felon Five. Pick one or the other...or both. They both equally apply.
"I love March!" - Tom Izzo
UofM delivered recruits to Ed Martin's house during official recruiting visits. They comped him tickets, hotels, and airfare. Media types like to overlook this fact. This isn't just about a rogue booster and Chris Webber ... it's about a university that actively promoted corruption.
Were it not for Mateen's rollover incident, Michigan would still be paying players.... Everything from 1985-1997 is tainted at UofM. From "T-Bills" Mills to Albert White ...
It's an interesting dynamic in sports that a fan-base can and will turn a blind eye towards cheating when it benefits their program, and even to the degree of defending that once it becomes known. We see the same thing with SEC football, Barry Bonds, and sorry to say, even the prism through which some see Perles or the NCAA probation for State football in the 70's. Self interest is an amazing tool with which you can build a level of denial that makes it OK. It's easy, from the outside, to point out those faults, but harder to embrace the truth when it says something unpleasant about yourself. I get that.
What I don't get, aside from McCabe, is the media playing the fan-boy role when it comes to the so-called Fab Five. The reality of that program is known, and while Michigan "fans" may be in a level of denial, to have that extend to ESPN and the Detroit Free Press is truly odd, and rather unprecedented. It started with an "imbedded journalist" in Albom just missing the story in front of him at the start and it doesn't seem to be fading. It's just truly odd.
Now, as a Spartan, I don't care for or about Michigan. But their basketball team this season seemed to be a cohesive group, coached by someone with a clear philosophy, and their run was impressive. Burke is a special player. Good for them. It's really unfortunate to have their accomplishment put through the prism of the Fab Five as it negates the reality that this team, by all accounts, seems to be doing it legitimately. And perhaps that's why Rose and others want, and so obviously desperately, to attach themselves to this year's team.
Good for McCabe for being a rather lone voice......
"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." --Gandhi
Remember the media guys have no ethics whatsoever. They are there to make money, sell papers and become famous themselves.
Look at the little clown Albom. Bragged in his articles that he spent so much time day to day withe frauds while writing his book yet missed the cars and cash???
When it all blew up on him he quickly wrote an article backtracking and claiming he might have seen some things. Then he quickly about faced and covered his ass.
Most of those lazy bums in the Detroit media turned a blind eye and facilitated the fraud and cheating. Joe falls wrote an article after Webber committed to scuM that he helped assist Fisher by inviting them both to speak at some event and wink winked a chance bumping into each other at the event.
At that time of webbers recruitment the onslaught was unreal against the MSU athletic programs. Anything to spin negatively they did. Webber was a game changer recruit and the Detroit media did all they could to assist scuM to land him.
Detroit media has no integrity until they prove otherwise. The past actions are despicable and unprofessional want to change that then they need to act like pros.

As a Michigan fan, I was certainly annoyed by jalen and his fab five reunion. It was fine that they attended the game, however they seemed to try and step in the spotlight a little much for my liking. I could care less and would rather hear about the likes of CJ Lee, zack Novak, Manny Harris, etc... Actually guys who in my eyes helped build what happens this past weekend.
EA SPORTS....It's in the Game!
What are you talking about?! Webber is the only one who took cash!! - head in the sand Walverines
Your a retard.
Truth! Great article
I actually had a walvie tell me not too long ago that the money didn't matter, Webber was going to UM no matter what.
Dang!! I was thinking he was ripping the REAL Fab 5, you know, the olympic gymnastic team , and there would be some hot photos of youngsters that I could forward to Forbin.
Agreed. I wasn't too pleased with the way Rose et. al. paraded in right before the game. One of the assistant coaches had to ask them to leave the locker room so the team could have some privacy.
First Bobby Knight.
Then Jim Nantz
Will someone (or 5 someones) please take a hint!
Great article and umer's can't accept the truth that these guys were cheats.
"I think the world is run by C students"
McCabe has been the HS sports reporter for the Freep for years...he probably knows more about the era than a lot of people.
Exactly. SCum, the university, benefited from the Fraud 5, benefited from the hype, and embraced it. They even embraced up through last weekend because if SCum had beaten the Cards, you know and everyone else knows that NC win would have been the springboard used to whitewash the whole Fraud 5 affair and start spinning it as "nothing more to see here, move on" to a bunch of low-information sports fans who wouldn't know any better.
I guess the difference and distinction should be made between forgiving and forgetting. Personally, I'm not in favor of doing either one in this case, however I can understand a desire to move on and forgive: fine. But to invite these shitters back into the spotlight and diminish what this seemingly honest and forthright team did was completely FUCKED up. As I said, the other day they are the proverbial turds in the punch bowl, floating up to the top for all to see.
Many UM alums feel that way as well. The way to go about it from a UM perspective is to forgive the douches and then completely ignore and disassociate yourselves from them. But they can't and won't because as well all know it's all about da benjamins.Still money there to be made, so they are being welcomed back into the fold. Horrific clown show all the way around IMO
Bless you, my man. First, Bo Schembechler was a holier-than-though cheater, too. He broke the rules recruiting and was negative-recruiting all the time, blaming a vulnerable MSU through back channels and whispers. Second, thank you for mentioning Jud. It is unforgivable that SCum's shenanigans unfairly hurt our basketball Program and Jud's own recruiting efforts.
very true: look at kentucky and memphis in basketball......just filthy. Fans at UK don't even CARE: similar to $EC football.....effing cess pool of epic proportions. O$U, U$C, etc.....brutal.

Bill, he's not downplaying it. Those others who were proven to have received money were not a part of the Fraud Five.
I have no doubt Jalen took money too but until we know the amount McCabe is correct in what he wrote.
For those that don't think this board is obsessed with UM:
When I type "Jim Nantz Fab Five" into google the 2nd result is a link to the rcmb thread about that
Rogue Leader= Obese coward who didn't attend MSU and has no college degree
Don't forget me!
Sincerely, H.H. Holmes and Richard Loeb.
I always thought it was weird that they were called the Fab Five, being that I can only ever confidently name 3 of them off the top of my head.
