Question: Had Izzo not added Mike Chappell, how likely is it that Lavell Blanchard would have came to MSU? Apparently Richardson badly wanted him here.
Location: Mumbai, India
Blanchard was one of the few Michigan players I would have liked to have seen in Green.
I don't recall Blanchard ever giving serious consideration to MSU. He played high school ball directly across the street from um. And he went to um despite a logjam at his position.
I recall that he wanted to be at MSU pretty badly. His dad even tried to get Izzo to take him as a walking.
He stayed out on the floor to watch MSU celebrate after the big blowout.
Blanchard is the guy who won 3 November Wooden awards right?
I remember that. He stayed in the tunnel to watch the trophy presentation and all the hoopla after the game.
Nίκη για MSU
I think MSU liked Blanchard but there was very little doubt that he was going to stay home. He could have gone a lot of other places.
He absolutely wanted to go to MSU.
I thought if Blanchard hadn't gone to UM, he was going to go to Virginia.
I don't know but that was a great state championship game with JR and Blanchard playing against each other.
Sorry guys. The guy went to HS across the street from Michigan Stadium. Probably was at open gym all the time. Also, the Ed Martin stuff didn't really get that out until right after he signed.
I vaguely remember Izzo saying he had no chance because Blanchard's location. Blanchard was considering a lot of schools, but I don't think MSU was in his Top 5. It was going to be Michigan or out-of-state.
I remember reading that Blanchard wanted to come to State but Izzo got Richardson and the spot was basically filled.
If Izzo would've had a spot and offered then he could've had him.
Grammar by Mad Dog Demarco!
I thought that Blanchard was strongly considering medical school and really wanted to go to UM for that possibility. He also played at Pioneer, right down the street.
Knew one of his teammates at Pioneer and he told he wanted to come but playing time was the issue with him.
So winning wasn't?
Thank you, Denicos.
Virginia may have very well been his third choice, don't recall.

That's the way I remember it too. As a matter of fact, I seem to remember Izzo told him that he'd be better off going somewhere where he'd get more PT than Izzo could offer him. Folks thought it was a pretty classy move by Izzo at the time. Once that conversation took place it was a foregone conclusion Blanchard would stay in Ann Arbor.
A poster already noted that his Dad spoke with Izzo about potentially walking on because of the lack of ships. In the end, he did choose to not walk on, but the kid and his Dad wanted him at MSU first and foremost. Those are facts. So for scholarships, MSU was his #1. Without a scholarship, it was not #1.
This doesn't make sense. Why would Izzo tell one of the top recruits in the country to go elsewhere (especially when elsewhere would likely be Michigan)?
This is basically the same thing that Jabari Parker said last month, except apparently because it supposedly came from Izzo's mouth it makes sense?
Sure it does. MSU and UM were the only two schools I remember seriously being discussed. Lavell really wanted to come to MSU. Izzo had a lot of respect for the Blanchards. He knew he couldn't offer him the PT with Richardson in the fold and he told him that he'd be better off going somewhere else especially if he eventually wanted to play at the next level. With Lavell playing at AA Pioneer, it was obvious where he was going to go. I don't remember Virginia in the conversation at all.
It wasn't, hey you need to go elsewhere. It was, there are no scholarships. Maybe a pseudo similar analogy would be the Dar Tucker situation i.e. first come, first serve. Izzo really isn't an over sign and push a kid out type of coach. For this situation, I would have liked him to be though. Also, it had become clear by their senior year that Richardson was the better talent/potential of the two to get.
This situation could not be any more different than the Parker situation.
