No If I was gay I would say my gay buttsex lover. This roommate happens to have a vagina. Thanks for all the responses I will be calling the gas company.
Edit: in response to frank.

I'm guessing situation can be downgraded from he gone to he hungover and sleeping until state game.
I'm going to assume that it's normal but most people don't notice the smell because the furnace exhaust usually exits out the roof. My exhaust has an odor but it's more like the dryer exhaust smell without any soaps for fabric softeners.
Its more than likely the vent system. Not a serious explosion threat but needs to be addressed because your paying for gas that you are not burning up.
If it helps, my dad would probably say you need to call to have them come out for sure. (Judging by past stories and such I have heard him talk about) He works for a utility and specializes in natural gas..
No harm in calling the gas provider. We had a similar issue last year. Our neighbors smelled it on the side of our house and called Consumers. They came out quickly, found a leak at our meter and replaced it right away. Don't hesitate to call if you smell gas. Sure it may not be serious, but the peace of mind is free in this case.
Many, if not most new high-efficiency furnaces vent out the sidewall through a PVC pipe. Mine is crotch-high on my driveway side. I smell it every time I walk on that side of the house.
Surprisingly he survived. Seems pretty upbeat to me

Is there, or has there ever been a gas grill in the yard? Once smelled gas in the backyard at my FIL's place. Turned out someone had plumbed a gas line under the patio with black pipe which, of course, rusted out
You may be an expert, so pardon me if I am somehow preaching to the choir, but I was asking my dad about the exhaust of furnaces and the natural gas smell and he said sometimes it can happen but if its a consistent thing someone should check it out. ( I think it was it was ok if the furnace just kicked on but if it was constant it should be looked at) His advice in general though was if you smell it you probably should have someone come out and check.
You may want to get that checked out, but if you are very sure you know what you are doing then no worries. Better safe then sorry though.
I guess I should have said I smell it when I walk by and the furnace is running. And while the exhaust has a distinct odor, it is definatly different than the smell of natural gas. But as you said, better safe than sorry.
Who has ColonelAngus in tRCMB Death Pool?
I just expelled some natural gas.

ahh I guess i should have been clear too. I meant while it was running. Anyway hope it's nothing, we only talked about smelling natural gas so not sure where to go on yours. would probably go google search it a bit before calling but as we both said better safe than sorry.
Is it near the gas meter? Could be the vent on the gas meter.
Had the same problem several years ago. Could smell it when there was a slight wind near my front door. Called the gas company who came out and found a leak in the meter attached to the side of our house. Replaced that the same day and problem solved.
