Wouldn't it make sense to be giving that kid some reps this year in preparation for next year? I'm increasingly nervous about the RB situation in 2013. Bell is gone, Hill is in no way, shape or form going to be a number one back. I understand saving him until you need him, but we are going to need producers in that area next year. Hopefully an improved O-line will help (why do I feel like I've been saying that for three years now?)
When you're playing in a one-possession game every week you're not concerned with getting reps for younger guys.
That's a very good point, but I think he could even be used to spell Bell for a bit, which is needed at times regardless of the score. But yes, it's hard to go away from the beast in a must win situation.

Not at the RB position. This season is a waste. Save his redshirt. We'll need him for 4 years.
Its five o'clock somewhere.
I think we need to be concerned with being able to get him reps in bowl practice.
I could be wrong, but I don't see Tompkins being a 20+ carry a game back at MSU. His highlight video is nice, but remember, this guy is only listed 5'9" 185lbs (and take these listing with a grain of salt). I'm not trying to knock the guy, I think he could be a great weapon, but I don't see him being the answer to Le'Veon when he leaves (whether it's this year or next).
I think the more likely scenario is MSU will have a running back by committee type thing. In a perfect world, a guy like Gerald Holmes enrolls early and has a Bell-esque freshmen season.
Running back is just one of those positions that doesn't seem to require a year's worth of game experience in the program to be successful. Bell, Baker, Caper, etc. were all able to come in and be effective as true freshmen. I don't think Thompkins will be any more effective next year by getting a few reps this year and it wouldn't be worth burning the redshirt.
Holmes is coming in next year as well and could be available as a true freshman. Would be nice to have him enroll early if Bell indeed goes pro.

How big was Ringer?
Also known as: being completely fucked. I hate when that happens.
That said, a nice speed/power combo (Ringer/Caulcrick, Baker/Bell) is always welcome.
5'9 185 out of HS. Left MSU at 5'9 202
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
Maybe I am in the minority but I think the over reliance on Bell has hampered this offense and team especially in the big games. Does it seem a good strategy to run a guy 26 times when he averages 2.6 yards a carry? That seems to lead to a lot of 3 and outs and 3rd and longs which is what we saw Saturday. Tompkins, Hill or Caper should be getting more carries. The thing with Bell is he is just not going to break very many runs over 7 or 8 yards. Way too many 2 and 3 yard carries. i dont think these teams are fearing Bell, they know he is not a threat to take it to the house unless we are inside the 10.
Well, yeah, this whole board has been saying all season that Caper and Hill should be receiving more carries.
Location: Mumbai, India
Caper and hill are just smaller versions of Bell, will the same speed and less moves. MSU needs more speed.
Bell will be back next year, just doesn't have the breakaway speed that warrants a high draft pick.
Wrong. So wrong. He's a power back. It was never about speed. The dude is gone. No way he abuses his body running behind a shit O line another year.
Why did MSU not offer Dennis Norfleet? Size concerns?
Yep, I wonder that too. I just don't get all the talk that Bell is a done deal to the NFL. What's his YPC? He's impressive getting yards after contact, but I also think the over-reliance on him has hurt this team offensively.
Pretty sure they did offer, but Kings and Tompkins committed and there wasn't any room for him at that point.
We are not the same, I am a Spartan
how many power backs get drafted in the first three to four rounds?
As of last week CBS had him as the third rated RB after Lattimore and Lacy and going in the 2-3 round. I would be surprised if he came back at this point.
Bell is valuable because he is a very good receiver and blocker. He'll definitely play in the league for a while if he stays healthy and should go in the first 3 rounds.
Hill is faster than Bell. Caper used to have a lot of speed before his injuries.
The season is over. There should be no excuse in getting next years guys reps now regardless of close loss or beatdown.
Bell had the benefit of other guys ahead of him and Baker barely played as a true freshman because of injuries.
I think you forgot how hard it was to run the ball in 2009 with Anderson, Leggett, Caper and Winston. We barely ran Anderson etc. in 2008 (because of fumbles) so we had to run Ringer to death.
We need to start giving Hill and Langford some carries.
Tell that to Johnny Adams, AR White, Larry Caper, Chris Norman, Chris McDonald ...
We are losing but competitive. We can afford two more losses before missing a bowl is a certainty. We will play to win. Any other approach is stupid.

Yeah, I saw on another network (can't remember which) they had Bell as the #2 running back taken in the draft. Only behind Lattimore.
His stock isn't getting any higher. The only way he comes back is if he is one of those guys who wants to play an extra year in college, get a degree, etc.
