Damn, that was one big whiff by our staff. The guy was begging for an MSU offer.
Agreed although it was a whiff by pretty much everyone, I don't remember anyone caring that he committed late to OSU at the time.
I was on the MSU Rivals site at the time, there were tons of people who were baffled why we wouldn't offer. Some insiders said that the staff didn't like his build and worried about his work ethic.
Oh well, there's a top 10 NFL pick that could have been used as a reference in recruiting battles.
I think a lot of coaches wrote him off as a fatbody.
Big time whiff in our own back yard. Can't afford to have those.
At least he won't be around to play us in the Big Ten title game next year.....
Look at this list. And while some of the offers may not have been commitable (considering the type of recruit many of those programs bring in), I do recall Bama trying to get him down for a visit. And I think it odd that MSU is the only "school of interest" listed that doesn't show an offer. He wasn't a guy that was recruited since his sophomore or junior year, but by the time his senior season was over, he had a lot of people after him, and he waited on an MSU offer until January.

I suppose it will always be one of those "coulda/woulda/shoulda"...... chuffed for this kid..... I don't think we have whiffed on many during coach d's time.....
I remember reading CBD's analysis of him and hearing the phrase "sloped shoulders" whenever he was discussed. Blows my mind that this guy became such a good player when most indications were that he was gonna struggle
He was considered fat and lazy. He ended up losing a bunch of weight, got into really good shape (for a big DT), and plays hard. Simply a matter of a kid whose light came on once he got to college.
Ajim Shabaj left early too........
I think someone mentioned that when he camped at MSU he just went through the motions and didn't put in any effort, so the kid didn't give them anything to see and they didn't offer. In hindsight it was a wiff, but I don't know what else the coaches could do under the circumstances.
SpartanRocky said a similar thing a couple months back. Something like the staff didn't think he'd pan out because of his build and work ethic.
Good for Jon. Another PSL kid in the NFL.
May be Luke Fickell figured out how to motivate him???

Two thoughts here:
1. I think Hankins was hurt by Antonio Jeremiah being on the team at the time. Jeremiah couldn't keep the weight off and the staff didnt want the to happen with another player.
2. Even if Hankins would have been on the team this year, they still would have been 6-6.
We are not the same, I am a Spartan
Eh, maybe, maybe not. The team was one play away from winning like 4 of those games they lost. An impact player making an impact play surely could have swung one or more of those games.
