People in America are a most gullable type.
I agree, but the idea that this clown is a victim is so far over the top that it borders on abject insanity.
ND alum in my office: "Come on, would the AD stand behind Te'o if they actually thought he was a part of it?"

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
I tend to buy it.
It would take some major brass balls (or stupidity) to cook this whole thing up, trot it out to the national media, and hope no one would look into it.
As much as I despise the Domers, I don't think they'd double down on this if they knew it was a fraud by Teo. They'd hate exposing their golden child, but that would be preferable to the risks of a cover up.
They have known for a few weeks, though, so we can question why they and Teo sat on it.
The ones really getting a pass on this are ESPN and Gene W. in particular. Gene said in an interview he tried to find a death certificate, memorial service, or any other evidence of the woman online right after her reported death. He found nothing, questioned Teo, and Teo said the family preferred not to be contacted. His suspicions should have been sky high, but he let it drop. Either shoddy journalism or he sensed he had been duped and was hoping the whole thing would just go away.

Did you co-worker actually refer to him as "the Te'o"?
Of course, there is always $$$ to be made.
Would an athletic department that covered up a negligent death of a student manager try to diffuse a lie by going all-in on the "victim of a hoax" angle?
+1 for despising domers.
However, I think you're underestimating the stupid factor here.
I put the odds at like 5% or less that Te'o wasn't part of the hoax. I have a hard time believing a well-spoken college educated young man could be swept up in an online romance for YEARS with someone he apparently never met and let it carry on for SO long and not become suspicious. I have a hard time believing he is THAT gullible and dumb. Either he is the most gullible and naive person maybe in the history of the world or he's in on this on some level. I find the latter much more likely. The other factor is some facts or statements make it look like Te'o or members of his family just flat out lied. The ND AD implied that this was ALL online however there are reports claiming they met at a ND/Stanford game. There are also reports that members of Te'o's family say he met up with her in Hawaii before. Well what is it, did he just make that stuff up or did Swarbrick misstate the facts that this was all an online relationship?
Finally, a lot of people who seem to believe Te'o was the victim are basing that on the fact that ND is standing behind him on this. I don't think that's much proof of anything. ND will always have an out now. If proof comes to light that Te'o was at least partly involved in this hoax, they can say well unfortunately Te'o did not give us all of the facts. Just like in the news conference he left much of the details up to Te'o to discuss. He even said they let Te'o decide whether or not to report this story. Notre Dame can always just say well we were misled by him.

I'd put the odds at 0%, but that's just me.
Also, I would say that ND chooses to be mislead.
Some people say he wasn't missing tackles in that game against Alabama, he was just tackling his girlfriend...
'Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable'
- President John F. Kennedy
Some people believe that the Moon landing was a hoax, that 911 was done by the government, and that the Newtown massacre was a hoax.
As far as organizations go, the NCAA found that UM received no competitive advantage from Ed Martin, that Ed Martin had no interest in UM basketball whatsoever, and that no recruiting violations took place.
Just how deep is the rabbit hole?
I find this all to be very fascinating.
This is the part that has people pausing at the moment. Teo is not playing another down for ND. Why risk your brand image if you did not investigate and gather all the facts? If ND investigation says he had an online relationship, then he did. Still does not change the fact that Teo is a liar.
I can imagine him getting swept up - what I can't see is the reasoning behind the catfishing. It went on for far too long without payments or gifts or anything.
Basically, it's not Te'o I don't believe; it's the nonpayoff of the supposed perpetrators that makes it hard to believe.
I dont know what to think at this point.
But wouldnt there be an outpouring of support for her. The rcmb would be looking for the obit to find out where to send flowers and donations.
Everyone going to south bend next year must wear to game. MUST WEAR TO GAME!!!
I live in ND country. I think the fans around here are less interested in what logically or likely happened. They already had their minds made up and just needed a narrative to parrot in order to reinforce their point of view. Swarbrick provided that for them.
I love lamp.
Agree 100%. He said he met this girl in person and looked into her eyes, and then shared pics of a girl that wasn't her. HUH?
I think it is possible, really unlikely but still possible. Especially if his dad was part of the sham. It is possible that he is just some athletically gifted rube. Any watch catfish, there are a ton of gullible people that will buy in to a fantasy.
He also could have embellished the story so it did not sound like he was some weirdo that had an internet "girlfriend." Teo gets sucked in to this chick, tells stories about her and makes up some things so he does not sound pathetic. Story grows out of control and he just rolls with it not wanting to find out the truth.
"Come on, would the President, AD, and head coach try to cover up a story of an assistant coach raping a child if they actually thought he did?"
No, typo by me . . . but that would have been hilarious
Listening to Dan Patrick, they reported on their poll (yeah, not scientific) that 81% so far believe Te'o was in on the hoax.
So, Abe Lincoln was right about SOME of the people, but not ALL of the people.
Aren't there quotes from Teo about meeting her after a game? Based on what's come out, it's seems completely obvious Teo was in on the hoax.
I'm not surprised ND would support him though. They've gotten away with a death and covering up a rape. Why not keep the streak alive?
