Really? You don't see how making up that you have a girlfriend covers up the fact that you are gay?
Or are you just saying there's no need to have this "fake girlfriend" end up dying?
I think it's safe to assume regardless of how/why this whole thing started, it isn't ending in a way Manti Te'o would like.
Even if he was the victim of a hoax, he is still complicit in continuing the lie for weeks while he was pimped to the media as part of his Heisman candidacy.

Yeah, the whole elaborate dying part. If he wants pub and thinks he can get away with it I can understand that. If he is gay, that kind of pub is bad because it gets people talking and thinking about your sex life. If you are using this "relationship" as a beard I would think you would keep the whole thing as subtle as possible just to keep everyone off the sent.
Surprisingly, yes, they are.
He's the only one who benefits directly from this hoax! Of course he's in on it!

Yeah what? Have you met a Mormon before? Or a conservative catholic... it's way way way way worse to be gay than a liar, especially if you call it "victim of a hoax" and the university backs you up.
I assume he gave her leukemia and killed her off when a lot of people were legitimately wondering why there was no trace of her beyond like one picture online and a twitter account. People we're probably like, "Hey what hospital can I send flowers to?" etc.
Yep. Every endgame is terrible for Te'o right now. His best case scenario is that he's the most gullible man in the world. With NFL teams having 2.5 months to dig on this guy, he'd be best served by telling all right now. Otherwise it's going to trickle out in bits and pieces.
My Canadian co-workers keep calling him Monty Theo.....
that's bull bucky, unless you are the pope or one of those really cool cardinal dudes, us catholics could not care less what team anyone plays for......
It's much worse to called a liar.
You're kidding right?
You don't think there would be problems at the University of Notre Dame if it's start football player came out as gay?!
They absolutely flipped their shit on someone who was pro-choice just stepping foot on and speaking to the campus...
Yes, he would have huge problems (I do agree with you), but, again, due to the leadership of the Catholic church and the school, not from Catholics in general.

No way he wasn't involved somehow. Just too many inexplicable things otherwise. There are inconsistencies between his story now and what he told reporters after his imaginary girlfriend faked her own death. And we're supposed to believe that he never bothered to try Skyping with this woman to see her face to face during the course of their alleged relationship? And third, fuck Notre Dame.

He's Big Man on campus. Football hero, compelling life story. Everyone wants to know who his girlfriend is or set him up with someone. Girls hit on him constantly. What to do if he's actually gay? Invent a girlfriend, of course. But she lives thousands of miles away so no one can ever meet or even see her. Very convenient.

@SportsCenter: NEW DEVELOPMENT - Former ND teammate tells ESPN's Bob Holtzman that many players knew Lennay Kekua wasn't really Manti Te'o's girlfriend.
Again, I agree that would have been convenient. But killing her off gets publicity and is counter-effective. If felt he was in too deep and wanted to end the rouse he could have just had her break up with him (or vice versa). If you are a gay morman at THE catholic school in the US you don't want publicity on your love life, you want people to leave it alone and not ask questions.
Update to Manti Te'o story: Greg Owens, a long time friend and fellow bicyclist of LANCE ARMSTRONG owns the Twitter account of Lennay Kekua(@lovalovaloveYOU). A plot setup by Armstrong months ago when realizing he had a very slim chance of keeping his doping a secret. He knew he was going to be killed by the media when everything came out. So his friend Greg Owens setup the account, befriended a highly popular figure at the time, Te'o, and then eventually faked her death. Months later when Armstrong was ready to come clean, his accomplices broke the story to Deadspin to eleviate any heat from the media on Armstrong.
This is exactly what my thought process was. But what Klevin Torborg is wondering, and now I'm wondering, is why would you then have this make believe girlfriend die? Wouldn't that just give the lie more of a chance of being examined?
I think it buys you a lot more time. People like his family, etc. kept asking to meet her, wondering why there were no pictures, etc.
Cancer and Chemo which ravage your body would explain no pictures "She doesn't want to take pictures, she says she looks so bad" etc. and then when that goes on for so long and she either has to get better or die... I think he chose die not knowing the media would get such a boner for the story. Once they did he just stuck with it realizing the publicity he could get and no one was questioning. Then he got arrogant a little bit because he was pretty sure he totally got away with it.
The whole thing is Monty pyTheon.....esque
Now I'm picturing Te'o twirling his moustache, injecting her with 'leukemia', and then doing the Samoan war dance.

My statement: This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but I have been told by Alabama's offense that Manti Te'o is not real. "

There was a Seinfeld about this.
Peterman speaks at Susie's funeral.
People don't want to accept that he's a lying dog because of his "faith" and clean cut exterior.
The will to succeed is important, but what's more important is the will to prepare.
Hey, even people of faith who are clean cut can qualify for some kind of mental sickness.
I got an email from Spirit Airlines today. Here was the subject line: "No hoax here...we are catfish approved!"
It then had the picture below and talked about a deal they were having.
