That maybe, but Carmody hasn't even been able to add some ice to the water
Neither has any other NW basketball coach. Ever.
Probably? That's like saying Mexico's probably the poorest country in NAFTA.
Northwestern is the only school in the Big Six conferences not to make the tournament.
What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...
Except for the whole basketball part of course.
But what you are implying is that it shouldn't be that hard to hire someone that good.
Northwestern has had one basketball coach for longer than three years with a record better than .500, and that guy retired in 1950.
Carmody arguably did as well as anyone could have in that job.
“Kansas may wind up number one in these polls, but that would be so unfair to Texas...” -- Len Elmore, 2/13/11
Every hear of Gary Barnett ?
That's the thing Fitzgerald followed Walker and Barnett. Barnett took the Wildcats to a Rose Bowl. Randy Walker was doing a very good job as well before he passed away.
2.) Ara Parsegean
3.) Randy Walker
4.) Pat Fitzgerald
Sorry I started that other thread. If Northwestern is such a great academic institution why fire a guy who is a decent coach and graduates his players and adheres to their high academic standards? He is basically a 500% coach. A bad move in my opinion.

Good move, this clears the way for Northwestern to become a combination of Duke, the Showtime Lakers, and the Harlem Globetrotters.

Tough to say anyone can get it done at NW because no one ever has.
Carmody has won 160 games there. Thats twice as many as any coach they have had in over 60 years.
Harold Olsen 1950–1952 19-25 11-17
Waldo Fisher 1952–1957 35-65 21-53
William Rohr 1957–1963 66-70 39-45
Larry Glass 1963–1969 61-81 33-45
Brad Snyder 1969–1973 30-71 16-46
Tex Winter 1973–1978 44-87 25-61
Rich Falk 1978–1986 80-180 34-110
Bill Foster 1986–1993 54-141 13-113
Ricky Byrdsong 1993–1997 34-78 10-62
Kevin O’Neill 1997–2000 30-56 9-39
Bill Carmody 2000–Present 160-177 58-126
But eventually you look for the opportunity to raise things up a level. Carmody was fine, there were years it looked like he would have them in position to finally get a bid, but it's not like they were on an upward trajectory.
So, you try someone new after a decade of somewhat respectable but not tourney worthy play. It really only takes that one guy to change things, especially in basketball. The right coach, one or two right fit recruits, and suddenly you have something. Their facilities blow, but they do have some things to sell. The academic opportunity, the chance to be a program changer... the right coach can sell that to the right kid. They're not looking to be Duke right now, but they can get to, say, a Stanford level. Getting to a tourney would make a kid a legend there.
Does this mean they won't be Duke ?
Tough breaks for NU over the years. Coble not coming back as a senior and quitting on them didnt help carmody a few years ago. That team with him on it could've made the dance.
Also way back in the 90's they had three or four really good players that transferred out rather than stay together and build a team.
One big guy went to BYU and was a star forward another guard became all PAC 10 and the highest profile of the transfers was Rex Walters who went on to become all American at Kansas and played in the NBA.
Then after they all left Geno Carlysle out of Grand Rapids was all big ten and then transferred to Cal.
Had the chances if those guys all stayed for their careers at NU. Tough break but NU should also use some of that Big Ten $$$ to upgrade their facilities.
They need to go for the turtleneck!
Northwestern fires coach Bill Carmody: http://cbsprt.co/CarmodyNW . Duke assistant Chris Collins is frontrunner for job according to @GoodmanCBS.
I'd say you were a 500% poster, but I can do math.
I understand the Collins thing, but if they want proven success, they should over pay and go get a guy who has been a head coach. I could understand firing the best coach you have ever had if you were going to get a proven coach, but to do it only to roll the dice on an assistant... I don't get that..
No love for Dennis Green???
"you want to crown them???"
Former Northwestern coach Bill Foster got Duke rolling before Coach K took over. They have been down the Duke road before.
What proven head coach is going to want to undertake the massive building job at Northwestern? They're better off trying to find somebody young, energetic and innovative. Somebody like Shaka Smart, Brad Stevens, or John Groce when he was Ohio.
Those guys are all proven head coaches...
I wonder if they'll look at Fife
get the new Nike MSU font: http://tinyurl.com/spartansfont
They weren't proven coaches when they got their jobs. I mean they need to try to find their own version of those three. Get somebody untested but smart and hungry.
I think Green won like 6 games in 5 years. He was, who I thought he was!
