Understand that MM has not yet turned around a deceased program at NIU, But if he were at Northwestern, he would have a better advantage at recruiting (or not, given academic requirements). Appreciate what Carmody has accomplished with the teams he has had (injuries and all).
Go ahead, make the argument. I'm listening.
Thank you, Denicos.
Green lost 34 games in a row at Northwestern.
I remember when Ricky Byrdsong had his mental breakdown going up into the stands. Should be interesting to see who the next hire is.
if you were those guys, would you take that job? Somebody like them isn't going to take the job either.
“Kansas may wind up number one in these polls, but that would be so unfair to Texas...” -- Len Elmore, 2/13/11
I agree with that. But the poster I responded to said that since Fitzgerald could do it, they should be able to find a basketball coach that can do the same thing.
I agree, it's likely that they're just ready to try someone new. That doesn't mean that finding the guy is going to be easy.
They already have the "arena" for it.
They need someone like the dude in Nebraska. They got a winner with him. I hate to think what he could with some players (who weight less than 350 pounds).
The Gary Barnett who was 10 games under .500 at NW in the same number of years, vs. Fitzgerald being 11 over? The Barnett who is tied with Fitzgerald in 10-win seasons (1) and 9-win seasons (1)? The Gary Barnett who left NW after a three-win season?
Yes, I've heard of that guy.
Well, he wanted the Nebraska job, despite knowing the history and the drawbacks. They're gonna have to find someone who wants the Northwestern job that badly.
The Barnett who took a perennial doormat to a Rose Bowl and two Big Ten Championships? Yes, that Barnett.
Ara's probably the guy that is there with him.
Coached eight years there, 0-9 in the second year, which probably explains why he only finished one game over .500. Four winning seasons and one break-even (because of a tie -- nine-game seasons back then).
Fitzgerald, in seven years, has four winning seasons and one break-even.
I think it's an argument, not a sure thing.
I get the Rose Bowl season. But when he got there, they were a three-win team. And when he left, they were a three-win team. What happened to the genius?
I don't see why they can't compete. I realize their standards may be higher, but it's a great education for the kids who can qualify and they're also in a pretty prominent basketball location.
Fair enough. He had higher highs, but ended on a low. He should get credit for lifting expectations after a generation of utter futility, though. They weren't just bad, they were blowout after blowout bad.
When Swopshire got injured and Shurna opted not to return Carmody was in trouble.
If Stanford, Duke and ND can make the tournament on a regular basis one has to think the Northwestern AD is wondering why it couldn't happen in 13 years with Carmody
Stanford and ND, maybe. Duke fishes from the same pool as everyone else when it comes to players.
Will people STOP comparing Northwestern Basketball to Stanford, Duke, and Notre Dame!!!!!
Location: Mumbai, India
Fitz will keep their football team playing too well to qualify as another Duke.
This isn't meant to be a dig or sound like I know all/you know nothing, but you have to look at what NW was before Barnett took over. They were without question, the worst team in D1A football at the time. This was also pre-spread offense, which became the great equalizer in college football. Barnett built a team that was based on the same principles of the other Big Ten teams, strong defense, great running game, ball control offense, etc, and he beat everyone's ass. Barnett was a great coach.
I do not agree. In fact, I strongly disagree.
Barnett took over arguably the worst program in college football and got them to the Rose Bowl. He built the foundation that brought Northwestern back to being relevant. Fitz, as a player, had a huge part in it.
I love Fitz as a coach and he has done a great job @ NU but you can't compare the overall records without looking at what each guy inherited. Barnett and Walker set the table for Fitz to succeed.
Edit: in the 10 years prior to Barnett's hiring NU won 23 games.
in the 10 years prior to Fitz they won 70.

Their next hire with be their 9th head coach in the period when MSU has had only 3: Ganakas, Heathcote, and Izzo.
No Glenbrook North Spartans on the board with any insight?
Double post, drunk, sorry.
