We're up 5 with the ball. He comes down and forces a ridiculous shot. Then he loses his man on defense and the Gophers get a backdoor dunk. Total momentum shift. Kid's a great talent but just plays stupid basketball sometimes.

Noticed that as well. We were starting to pull away. I can't count how many times this season he's just lost his man; too bad there's no one behind him on the depth chart or else I'd hope that Izzo would bench him.
We also couldn't finish in close or at the FT line; gotta have those easy points. Nix should have had 20 with the position he was getting.
Couldn't agree more. Kid flat out didn't come to play. There were a few moments where he just let the other team out hustle him for a ball right at his feet. Nix needs to work on his baby hook too, he couldn't hit a thing today.
Do not agree, Payne's goal tend (wtf with that, there was no way given a six foot shot it would be anything but coming down when you hit it) that gave them a 1 pt lead, followed by the TO he had on the next series trying to pass it out of the corner, then he fumbled the Appling pass (I concede it was coming in a little hot) followed by his foul pushing someone on the rebound. This was 8 points for MN in a 1 pt game hurt us bad.

Payne and Nix weren't much better. Payne is lost and Nix couldn't finish. Also, Gauna allowed 6 straight points when he was in. He's a baller.....
He is very immature and pouts too. He has a lot of talent, now he needs the right attitude.
Payne killed any momentum or chance we had.. 5 star athleticism. 1 star basketball IQ.
hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.
Why are people just looking at the last 5 minutes? Payne, Nix and Dawson were owned all day by Williams and Mbakwe.

The decision to play Nix, Payne, and Dawson together in that key stretch with 9 mins left when we were up 5 was the downfall. Terrible decision by Izzo. That lineup hasn't worked. Didn't work today and won't work until those guys can successfully diversify their skillset.
Despite your honesty and sheds of truth, YOU'RE WRONG. How dare you question Izzo and MSU hoops?!?!
Sparty > Walverines
I agree. This kid is a tremendous talent and obviously worked very hard to recover from the knee, but he takes way too many plays off and does not work on defense. He needs to play every game with the same energy and intensity he played with at the UConn game. Otherwise, he is NOT going to be an NBA player.
Dawson's body language has been very Raymaresque lately.

Basketball is about match ups. Nix could not guard Mbakwe or Williams. If Payne and Dawson could have guarded them and gave us some offense and rebounds, we win. Who do you think Izzo should have put on those 2. If Dawson and Payne with their athleticism can't do it we're screwed, like we were.
Let's just kick everyone off of the team. They all fuckin suck
Look, we were beat by the better team.
Dawson and Payne have amazing raw ability, but they don't have any focus or basketball IQ. It has to drive Izzo crazy. The unforced turnovers are just ridiculous. You would think that guys that can barely score without dunking might look for a pass when they're within 6 feet of the basket.
No way someone as athletic as Dawson should be getting scorched on back door cuts. He gambles on steals too often.
Nix 5-15 (from 3 feet and closer)
Payne 2-6 (one shot from the FT line)
Nix and Payne should be shooting about 60% from the spots they get the ball, not 33%
Tom Izzo knows what kind of players they are when he recruits them. He wants athletes that focus on physical play. He values this more than pure shooters. How many years have to go by before people realize this?

Dawson can guard those guys. He can't guard any perimeter player on their team. He is hopelessly lost guarding the perimeter. Dawson needs to stay at the 4.
This and the piss poor FT shooting are what lost the game.
1. Mbakwe had a decent day production wise, also had five turnovers. I wouldn't say he's what beat us today at all.
2. You say we're screwed, we suck blah blah blah every year. You were bitching not stop during a 30 point win at Eastern Michigan last year for Christ's Sake. Then we ended up winning the B10, B10 Championship and went to the Sweet Sixteen.
This is a very young team that played a very good team on the road. Minnesota could very well win the conference this year for all we know.
People need to chill the fuck out. Its tough to win on the road in the B10. Hell IU is getting pushed around @ Iowa as I type this.
That was our game. We blew it with:
1) TERRIBLE foul shooting
2) Dawson being awful on defense
3) Nix missing 10 shots from 1 feet away
MSU is better than Minnesota. Just had some key mistakes today, and Minnesota is better than they have been in the past and made us pay. MSU is still better, IMO.
Dawson hasn't impressed me this year. He looks great when he's using his athleticism to rebound and hit putbacks, but he's not very good on drives and has no range. Defensively he can match up with anyone, but frequently gets out of position.
He's still on a free pass from the knee injury, but at some point that's going to expire. If this team is going to seriously contend for a B1G title, and if it wants to make a tourney run, they need Dawson to be a beast every time he's on the floor.
Neutral court maybe, they were the better team today. The refs didn't do us any favors, but we still lost by 13. That just is what it is.
Had a very good chance to win, just got ice cold and lost our momentum down the stretch. I think we do win the next five though to get back to 16-3 going to Wisconsin.
@ Penn State
Should get all of those to get to 5-1 in the conference and get some much needed confidence.
Completely disagree. We had the game won even with poor play from our bigs and just didn't execute down the stretch. I would have liked to see Valentine in there some towards the end, I guess Izzo doesn't quite trust him yet
How can you completely disagree? Neutral court I think us and Minny would be very, very close.
