Notre Dame has always had 4 and 5 star talent, Kelly did a great job coaching that talent this year, Dantonio has very few 4 and 5 stars yet won 22 games in two years while Kelly struggled with said talent. What's your point?
My point, as I have stated before in this thread, is that MSU needs to pick up the recruiting. I think Dantonio is good enough to win, but they need to recruit.
Gotta give Kelly credit
He's done it at every place he's been at
Nope. It's that cut and dry for this Binfird character.
can't believe this thread is still going.
"Put your mother in a straight-jacket you punk ass white boy." ~ Mike Tyson
First question: Recruiting absolutely matters. "Rankings"? I have no idea (we had a lot of 4 & 5 stars in 2002, and we all know how that turned out)
Second question: No, Kelly is not "far superior" to Coach D. In fact, I'm not sure Kelly would have gotten as much out of this program from 2008 - 2011 as D did.
But what the hell do I know?
Dantonio was 18-17 at Cincinnati
Kelly replaced him and was 34-6 at the same school.
Make all the " they were so and so's players", but the records are starkly different.
Kelly started with a completely new QB from outside the program his first year, and immediately doubled the offensive output MD had with many of the same kids, even playing a completely different system.
MD is a good fit here, better than the usual football stooge who is brought in here, but yet as time will reveal, not good enough to get scooped up by an elite school. A perfect 7-5 lifer.
Kelly's team?? Very disciplined and 12-0
Dantonio's team??? Tackles people 5 yds out of bounds and runs into punter on the way to 6-6 season barely beating the gophers (please, the game was much closer than the score indicated)
I have an MBA...Master at Being Amazing
How fucking stupid are you people?
Where was Cincinnati football when they hired Dantonio? Where was Cinci football when they hired Kelly? The 7-5 lifer comment is ironic since there is no such thing as a 7-5 lifer.
MSU left points on the field...The score was closer than the actual game itself. Just like all of the previous 11 games.
You don't have to lie to make a point about the poorly coached offense.
Really fucking stupid
You should know this by now.
This is tRCMB where no win is by big enough, there is no such thing as good enough and every mildly negative event is clearly the rending of the universe and all we have ever held dear.
It's tiresome, and I thought the place was actually safe after a win. I should have known better.
"When I was in school they told me practice makes perfect. Then they told me nobody's perfect. So I stopped practicing." --Steven Wright
Rick Minter was 53–63–1 at Cincy.
You can twist MD taking over a team in its last year in conference USA and moving to the BIG East all you want. Dantonio inherited a senior QB from Minter and had by FAR his best offensive season that first year.
His last two years, both in the Big East Dantonio had an overall losing record, along with getting curb stomped by Army and Miami of Ohio both by 3 friggin touchdowns.. Army?
Kelly went 34-6 conference coach of the year twice, and two BCS appearances.
Dantonio did nothing, other than reveal himself to be a good evaluator of under the radar defensive talent
Talent which Kelly really didn't use, he instead scored tons of points to put butts in seats and generate interest in the program, both issues Dantonio didn't make a dent in.
Cincy fans will fairly state that MD laid a solid foundation, but was bland and boring in his offensive approach.
In short, solid, but frankly unremarkable
This is too much reality for some to handle. Please tone it down.
So what is your solution? Fire Dantonio and hire who?
Had we hired Kelly and he had won 11 games 2 years in a row he would have been coaching somewhere else now. So who should be our coach if not for our most successful coach since Duffy?
So, is Kelly's 12-0 regular season (with better on-paper talent) in 2012 far superior to Dantonio's 11-1 season (with lesser talent and a head-to-head victory) in 2010?
Is Kelly's 28-10 record in the last three years far superior to Dantonio's 28-11 record in the last three years?
You might want to get used to the fact that Notre Dame will always recruit better than MSU, and so will OSU and Michigan. You can't just snap your fingers and say "Let's recruit better!"
Fuckin lock it
Reality is that MSU is not a destination for the elite high school players who can go to any school they want to.

This is an excellent point. I'm positive the same words were said when Northwestern hired Gary Barnett or Wisconsin hired Barry Alvarez. The big difference is that those coaches made it to the Rose Bowl. Yes, I realize MSU should have made it two years ago based on an ancient tie tie vs tie only when you tie another team that beat someone else and you haven't won in a long time rule, but come on guys: Win the fricking conference
Dantonio I think is fine, solid enough defensive guy to have a defense that could be capable of doing its part in a BCS environment.
Offensively, I think he is bland, and doesn't think outside the box.
The key to me would be hiring an offensive staff that can take the ball and run with it with independence.
Dantonio has yet to reveal to the fan base if he is able to mount this change that is and will hamper his efforts in many areas going forward.
MSU flat isn't going to recruit well enough to slug it out with better talent. That seems to be the only way Dantonio knows as we speak.
This MUST change.
NO HE HAS NOT. GET KELLY'S DICK OUT OF YOUR MOUTH.
plus 1, very true. Although I think they need to recruit better too.
