He's won everyone he's been, but he would have treated MSU like CMU and Cincinnati.
So you're bringing up Gary Barnett and Barry Alvarez getting to go to the Rose Bowl and then discounting that MSU would have gone to the Rose Bowl by the same rules that those two benefited from?
Holy shit....this is dumbass question of the year. If recruiting didn't matter....Nick Saban would still be the coach of MSU and would have won 3 national championships. But of course, he is not and MSU has not won any national championships in recent memory.
But but. Msu lands " good gets and solid gets" and you can see how that has translated into wins this year. Further the fact that md is loyal to an oc that is worthless gets me fired up for next year!!
Keeping the sunshiners in check since 2000.
This really only applies to the blower apologist crowd of boozhoo, red hot llama fairy coward, Duffy, rogue leader, Nigel UNO: the ardent defenders of incompetent coaches.

And it all came crashing down this year. The point is the recruiting Has not improved after those two 11 win seasons. It remains stagnant in the 30s while Kelly has passed msu in year three.
Yes he could and would.
MSU currently has verbals from 3 of the best players in Michigan for the class of 2014, may be receiving another from one of the top 2-3 pocket passers in the country in a few weeks, is among a handful of leaders for Jeff Jones (a top-80 RB), and is among the early leaders for Brian Allen and Kyle Trout (2 of the top OL prospects in the region). In your view, how should they be doing at this point?
The recruiting has improved, just not as fast as one would like. Our classes have gotten smaller and avg star ratings increased. 2013 will be MD's best class in the final rankings (granted some of that is because of what players have done AFTER recruiting was over, Terry for example) and 2014 is off to a great start. I'm willing to wait on judgment until after 2014 is finished. If it's still in the 30's after getting two possible/probable 5 stars in Drake Harris and Deon Drake, something is definitely wrong with our recruiting coordinators. Should they be in the top 15 like they should be I'll be fine with that.
Being in the mix means nothing to me. Signing them does.
Totally agree with that. However they haven't signed anywhere else yet so we have a good chance at signing a special class (top 10) in 2014.
Just out of curiosity what ranking on rivals/247/scout/espn would you be satisfied with? what would you consider a good class? and what would you consider a great class?
As much as it is about ratings, it is also about coaching. The offensive coaches have totally ruined this offense which fields an Elite 11 four star quarterback, a 4 star running back in Caper, and several 4 star receivers. I just hope these talented players aren't ruined for life...hopefully, a new oc, qb coach and receivers coach can resurrect the talent and squeeze the star juice out of these talented players.

And as HC MD is failing the program by keeping these guys employed.
This is pretty bad-ass right here. +1
Don't post poop!
Unfortunately. It's not going to happen.
Just so I know...who am I defending?
If you are going to be a blower, it's important to know who you're blowing.
He's a coach?
Recruiting matters in terms of finding guys that are (somewhat) level-headed and will fit into the coach's system.
Recruiting "rankings" don't matter at all
How does one "run with independence".
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
Musberger was saying last night, many of Notre Dame players were Charlie Weis recruits.
Without that pesky offensive line getting in the way.
They also stated that Kelly was recruiting at an elite level and to expect the sucess to continue for as long as he is there.
Its just another piece of evidence that recruits do matter, but being an elite coach is probably at least as important in coaching up said recruits.
