My impression of Charlotte is a lot of bankers and bible beaters. I think Raleigh has more character, which might have something to do with all the colleges and universities in the area.
This was my impression too. I haven't spent a bunch of time in Charlotte but the time I have spent I didn't care for. It reminded me of the scene in Swingers when Mikey and Trent talk about lame parties where everyone is looking around the room for someone cooler to talk to. Everyone wants to know what bank you work for, what your title is and how much money you make.
I am allergic to ragweed pollen which is much better here for me than it was in Michigan. Those who have spring pollen allergies it can be much worse here. We get so much spring pollen that it coats cars and homes with this yellow film. It is gross but washes away easily.
If you can spend $500-800K on a house then you should be able to get what you want easily in home size/neighborhood. That much money buys a lot of house here. The only question is would you be able to get a lot the size you want. I think you'd be able to find something. As I mentioned before I have a house similar (albeit a little smaller) than you'd want in Wake Forest, NC and it cost me around $300K. My same house in North Raleigh or maybe even Cary would probably cost $400K.
Heritage Wake Forest and Bedford of Falls River are two HUGE master-planned communites that are very popular. Finding a 1/2 acre in those neighborhoods will be tough, though. Brier Creek and Wakefield are two others to look at in this part of town. I don't know a lot about neighborhoods in Cary/Morrisville. Almost all of the homes in these neighborhoods are pretty new.
The homes ITB (Inside the Beltline/I-440) like Five Points and Glenwood Ave are more historic, older homes. Lots can be even smaller and homes can be more expensive since they are much closer to downtown. I always thought of this area as being for the younger people as it is close to NC State, too. There are some nice homes there, though, especially near Carolina Country Club.
For any home in Wake County you can look at the lot size/selling price here. Just zoom in to street level, click the blue "i" button in the upper-left, and then click on a lot to show the info.

Who is interested in getting MSU themed NC license plates?
I got the run down from the NCDOT, and we need the following:
300 paid applications requesting MSU theme
MSU plate design
Sponsorship from an NC State legislator
I am willing to spear head this. Surprised it has not been done yet. Anyone have info on past drives to get this done?
I know the Charlotte area alumni club has been trying to get this done for a couple of years now as has Minnie for the Greensboro area. Don't know if anything has been done in Raleigh.
