It would not surprise me at all to see Minny or Illinois win the league. Minnesota is probably the most athletic team in the conference and Brandon Paul will definitely compete for BT POTY.
Computer says Illinois has a better SOS and record than us. OSU's SOS is worse, but we rank lower on Sagarin because we keep struggling against crappy teams.
What i posted wasn't a prediction. The thread is about current power rankings. It's great everyone is pumped up from beating Texas, but i was trying to look at things objectively. What we've done so far has us 6th according to Sagarin, and when i look at all our games, not just yesterday, it makes sense to me.
The numbers don't always tell the truth. After watching these teams play you cannot tell me that there are 5 teams in the B1G better than Izzo.
So the crap teams that Illinois played were better than the crap teams that we played? You can't read to much into those things. How many different lineup combinations did Izzo throw out there this preseason? He was playing 11 people a game. December rankings mean nothing. I definately wouldn't look at rankings in December this year and say that we are 6th in the B1G.
The OP is not a troll, maybe they are a MSU fan? Shocking hypothesis, I know...
7-12. Who cares?
7-12. See above
UM's is Bradley! So they won on a neutral court, big deal. Yes UM won the NIT. That is because they have a lot of experience playing the post-season NIT! I wouldn't brag about winning the NIT! loLoLoLolOlOoL

Butler on a neutral court and Gonzaga away are good wins for Illinois.
I am not saying the Illinois is a bad team (I think they are good team) I just do not think they are better than State. They live and die by the 3 and do not seem to have much of a post game. I could very well be wrong. I will never agree to seeing a Tom Izzo led team to being ranked 6th in conference, especially a team that has this much talent on it.
I know the program will have down years and sometimes finsish low in the B1G, but to say going into conference they are the 6th based on rankings from November and December seems to be misguided.
On could easily argue we were the 6th best team in the big ten in 2011. We finished in a 4 way tie for fourth, were seeded below 2 of the teams we were tied with in the tournament, and got bounced 1st round
Also finished tied for 6th in 2006 and 2007
I know that it will happen from time to time. But do you really think that we are the 6th best team in the B1G this year?
Sagarin. Lol. Anyone who has Ill. above Msu loses all credibility.
Yea, bro.. I mean... scUM is so gay man... Like they are soo overrated bro!!!
Back to moms basement walvie
If we don't improve on turnovers and perimeter shooting, yes. If we do, we are top 3, easily.

Yes, December rankings mean nothing. But the thread is about a December ranking, so you might as well do it objectively. All the things you said would make sense if we were doing predictions for later. I don't think there are 5 teams better than MSU, but i do think there are 5 teams that have so far done better this season.
It's a pet peeve of mine. Rankings shouldn't be about who is "better". They should be about who has done the most on the court, on the field, at the point the rankings are made. I recognize that last season Alabama was the best football team, but i still think it's b.s. they even played in the championship. Oklahoma State had done more on the field up to that point.
Make the games be what count, just like the NCAA tourney does.
No, but as good as the big ten is this year, it wouldn't be crazy if it happened
That's the same attitude of poll voters who insisted on voting for scUM and ND football during their crappy years the past 5-6 seasons. It's laughable, sorry.
You don't rank based on a coach or based on blue blood. You rank based on what has actually happened up to that point in that season. Illinois has done more. OSU is more debatable, depending on if you value margin of victory or not.
I'm not sure it's debatable that OSU's resume is better. They have 0 signature wins and have lost to the only two good teams they've played, and their overall strength of schedule is somewhere around 260th, considerably lower than MSU's. OSU and MSU also share a common opponent in Kansas, and OSU lost while MSU won. I guess all anyone could say is their two losses are "better" than our two losses, and they beat some of their cupcakes by a larger margin than we did. Big deal.
What I would like to see happen is the following:
1) Finish in the top four of the Big Ten
2) Cut down on turnovers
3) Improve on three point shooting
4) Consistent play from Nix and Payne
5) Suffer no serious injuries
If all that happens, I will feel very good about this team's chances in March.
You mentioned Penn State's devastating injury but now Northwestern's. Drew Crawford is out for the year, so they can literally say goodbye to their season. I went to the Staford @ NU game on Friday night. They will miss him big time.
You do realize I am a MSU fan, not a WALVIE (wtf)!
I don't understand your comment at all. UM is the on top now, but they will fall and fall hard. Yes they are overrated bRaH!
I did pick MSU to finish first though...
P.S. I don't live in the basement, I just shoot hoops and swim down there (it's the ultimate man cave).

4. Ohio State
12. Penn State
Michigan State University is the university of Michigan
What's equally as strange to me is that one of the "Baby Boilers" is still playing at ND. That being Hummell's HS teammate Scott Martin.
I'm not sure how he was granted a ninth year, but I guess he wonders Mitch McJesus is still older than him.
When is the last time scUM has had a legendary coach? Or Notre Dame? Michigan has been doing less with more since the 40s. Notre Dame since the early 90s.
Now with a PhD in Applied Llama Physics...
Michigan Fan's perspective here -
3. Michigan State
4. Ohio State
12. Penn State
Michigan has beaten some solid teams/programs (Pitt, NC State, West Virginia) and looked comfortable doing it. They finally have the athleticism of an actual top-15 type team for the first time under Beilein.
Indiana is really good despite their loss. Zeller gives them a great inside presence.
I picked MSU as third over tOSU because I just don't see the scoring options there for tOSU to win consistently in the B1G. Thomas is a good player but he can't carry a team. If tOSU does better than 3rd/4th in the conference this year I will finally admit that Thad is a legitimate coach and not just a product of having insane amounts of talent.
MSU is still MSU and Izzo is the best coach in the conference. They have great athleticism and big men that can put in points. Should be an interesting race between Indiana,UM, and MSU IMO. Minnesota and Illinois are solid but I don't think they are anything spectacular.
This looks about right to me. um looks pretty good right now and IU has a very solid team that will hang near the top nationally all season barring some major injuries.
The moment is eternal
