In "the strangers" type vein....
Taking a chick to the cottage... Need a solid scary flick but not too gory / horror.
Silence of the Lambs
Strangers, only movie that ever scared/freaked me out.
scary but non horror? im confused.
Hmmm - isn't that supernatural- type??? Ill consider that--- trying to get a semi-realistic ala strangers type thing...
Like without chainsaws and that type of hack em up shit.
human centipede ftw!
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Silence of the Lambs

Get off my lawn.
re: Kathy Bates, what was seen will never be unseen.
Shining and silence are solid.....
Seen em too many times though -- same type I'm looking for !
The Uninvited (2009)
The Ring 1 or 2 (scared me)
What Lies Beneath
Dan Roushar reads his playbook by a open fire.
Identity is a good one (I also have a man crus on John Cusack, so you know)...I like The Strangers a lot, but there's no way I would watch it while I was out in the country - that goes for all scary movies, thrillers, etc. Even the one I suggested.
Googling identity. Also cusack fan going back to lane Myer in better off dead...
I'd go with 1408
Open Water got to me. Being left in the ocean, miles from anything, would freak me out.
Edit: Silence of the Lambs was also an excellent suggestion.

Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read. - Groucho Marx
Probably better to say scary movie that is not a slasher flick.
Drag Me To Hell
Paranormal Activity (I prefer the theatrical version, and note the acting does suck)
The Omen (original)
The Exorcist (you probably have seen this though)
The Others (not a personal favorite, but many really like this film)
Others I could think of have been mentioned.
I seriously don't get how Strangers scares people. Other than jumps, they did a terrible job with the psychological aspect of it.
The descent. One of the scariest movies to me for some reason. I usually don't like scary movies, not for the scary aspect, but dumb movie plots and what not. But the descent scared the shit out of me, would definitely do the trick.
Well it's hard to find good horror without any gore, but here are some of my favorites that might fit what you're looking for - more atmospheric.
Black Sunday (Mask of the Demon) - by the great Mario Bava
Black Sabbath - also by Bava, similar title as above but different movie
Eyes without a Face
The Haunting - 1963 original
The Amityville Horror - based on the book
Others but less similar to what you're looking for:
Bride of Frankenstein
Horror of Dracula
The Wicker Man - the original, of course
Night of the Demon (Curse of the Demon)
This is not even a hard question.
tRCMB - Visit at your own risk of being disgusted.
I second Identity.... that was a good flick...
I've heard good things about Session 9. It's about an asbestos cleanup crew that has to go to a condemned asylum. Haven't seen it myself, but from what I've heard it's not gory at all and is very psychologically driven. Circa 2001, I believe.
We were one among the Fence.
Alone in a secluded cottage, with all the lights off, Paranormal Activity would probably freak her the hell out. And you too, if you haven't seen it yet.
