I may be in the minority, but does anyone else not follow recruiting at all? I only know names of recruits because of the titles of threads on this board. Parker, Dawson, etc. but I don't know, or care about, the background stories. I understand that many do, and understand why people think it's important, I just don't have any interest in following it. A couple days after signing day I'll check out who Michigan signed and take a look at the rankings.
Does anybody else pretty much ignore recruiting?
You have a VIP account, but you don't care about recuiting? Seems like a waste of money.
I just donated to help out the site in the beginning. I've been a long RCMB poster, so thought I'd do my part. I keep forgetting to stop the reoccurring donation!
I pretty much ignore until signing day. Though I do read through all the recruiting articles to find and count the number of times I read "family atmosphere." We're up to 15,291 this year.
I used to be that way, then I got suckered in. However, based on how these recruiting "experts" work (employing fan boys who inflate the star rankings towards one program), I'm becoming more and more disillusioned with the entire process.
I like Dan and Sean, more for their insight into our programs, so I will keep the VIP here, but I find myself not giving a shit about what these "experts" say. It is a joke, really.
I view it as follow the prospects of the IWngs and Tigers. You can only put so much stock in rankings, but it is a way to follow athletes before they are part of your program. That being said I really want Dawson.
IMHO, at the end of the day...it all comes down to anal.
I used to follow it a bit more but became tired of the constant, "X coach is dirty," "we'd never do that," "we didn't get X player because Coach X doesn't play dirty." That sort of thing, from all different boards.
The way I see it, it's big time college athletics. I'm assuming, to some degree, all coaches bend rules. To what degree I don't think we'll ever really know.
Obviously, there are some - Fab Five comes to mind - that were outrageously bad. But we always hear Calipari and other names. I don't know if anythings ever been proven about Cal, or if we just wish something would because he gets the guys.
I keep seeing Dawson. From what I gathered, he was a Michigan commit, decommit, and now each being approached again. I know he's an OL. Is he being chased by anyone other than MSU and UofM?
It really depends. There are some "can't miss" guys that I'll follow, but I always base the previews on on-field performance. I don't care if Will Campbell was a 5-star or Bell was a 2-star; I see an adequate college DT and a very good college RB.
I like to keep track of MSU targets from time to time; it's kind of fun to see if the "misses" come back to haunt MSU or if State dodged a bullet ( Ahem, Cedric Everson springs to mind). I also like to familiarize myself with the backgrounds of the frosh; nice to know that Jack Allen was a 3-time State wrestling champ and that Travis Jackson played DT a bunch in HS (OH D POY his SR year). It helps explain position changes, etc.
Successes of teams like Wisky/Iowa/Va.Tech and failures of ND/USC/Auburn/TN, etc. have shown that recruiting rankings alone are not a great indicator of future success.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
Highly rated OG/OT who was committed to UM. Decommitted a few weeks ago; was/is being pursued by MSU, tOSU and Bama. Now UM is back in the mix.
Well then, you probably won't enjoy any of the other boards on 247. Most of them are page after page singing the praises of 17 year old high school kids as football or basketball recruits. They NEVER have threads on sex parties in Saginaw. Like I said, boring.
Nίκη για MSU
I come here for the off topic stuff mainly. I used to mix it up more in regards to UofM topics, but it's just not entertaining. Rarely anymore, can there be a quality sports conversation on this board without it being quickly ruined.
I like to read the articles that analyse a complete and signed class - let's me know what I should expect from the recruits. I also like read about the state of Michigan's top 10 or whatever, just to see where the cream of the state is going, and then try to remember if they pan out later on. Also, huge recruits like Jabari Parker or Drake Harris are interesting to follow. Kind of fun to see how these guys do after being so absolutely dominate in high school. But talking about leans, and recruiting wars is awful. I imagine the worst part of being a college coach is recruiting. Having to be a salesman to 16/17 year olds who think they are superstars has to be downright brutal.
I don't follow it. I can't respect someone who calls himself a "recruiting expert". What a pathetic job.

Eff you Michigan scum!!!!
I used to follow it closely on another site, but then I cancelled my subscription. There were far too many "can't miss" guys who never did anything, and too many "nobodies" who ended up performing very well to give the rankings any credence. It seemed like a waste of time when you consider that it's a crapshoot anyway, and the arbitrary "bumps" recruits get based on what school they pick.
I've barely paid attention to this recruiting cycle. A quick look at the commit list, and I was underwhelmed. But then i read on here that some people think it's the best class Dantonio has had. From having followed recruiting, I also know that homerism runs rampant among fans, so I don't put much stock in it. I'll see these recruits in 2, 3 or 4 years, then we'll figure out who can play.
Are you forecasting Travis Jackson switching to DT?
laconophilia is everywhere...
Yes, I ignore the recruiting stuff for the most part, unless it is a local kid....people who get all wrapped up in it need to get a life. Way too much importance placed on recruits and winning and losing...and too little on the quality of the program and the kids brought in. You could have a program like Kentucky, but I don't want that....would have to walk around with a bag over my head I would be so embarrassed.....like scUM fans and the fraudulent five.....I could never overcome that level of cheating should it ever happen at MSU.
Naw, just saying that his athleticism allowed him to project to multiple positions, including OG and C.
Its still the lifeblood of a college football or basketball programs and the rankings although not perfect are a pretty good estimate of who is getting the talent. There are other variables and hidden gems out there. But the fact that Bama is dominating football recruiting and Kentucky Bball recruiting implies that it is no coincedence that they are the reigning national champions. If we land Parker the RCMB will go bonkers declaring our greatness based on his recruiting hype. Then recruiting rankings will matter. In short they only matter if you are doing well in recruiting. Otherwise fans of schools not doing well will downplay recruiting rankings.
hey...pm me your address so i can let the parental units know bro.
I'm constantly amused by how deathly serious posters on this board and all the other boards, take the decisions of a bunch of pimply 17 year old kids. Recruiting was always a crap shoot, and now most commits are in before they have played a single down of their HS senior season. It's comical to read the panic stricken posts when we lose some future superstar and the Tanfans of the worlds immediately chime in with their two-star inferiority complex.
I'm VIP but the last thing I would pay for is the utterly useless recruiting info provided by the "experts". I'll wait until signing day to find out who we signed, and I'll wait until football season to see if they can play or not.
