I feel like you may have completely missed the point of the article.
I would be intrigued by seeing (Just seeing, I'm not projecting anything) Gary Harris run the point. He seems to have some serious smarts, good vision, and a good handle. Not to mention the ability to slash and to defend.
I'd think he'd be as serviceable as Charlie Bell Circa 2001. Then again I'd also like to "see" Valentine do the same thing.
But in the meantime, Appling is a damn fine PG. Davis is nit-picking a very good starting 5 in MSU here. Like Elite starting 5, if you ask me..
There is romance in all of us
I feel like I didn't.
As long as we're inventing characteristics... The Jigsaw Man would like Adreian Payne's lung capacity to increase. The Jigsaw Man would also like Russell Byrd to hit 70% of his threes and score 37 a game. Oh, and the Jigsaw Man (while he's at it) would like Derrick Nix to brush his teeth with both hands.

You're criticizing the premise of the article as being a hypothetical exercise (which makes it curious why you're even in this thread), not the validity of the section on MSU, which doesn't seem wrong at all: MSU would be much-improved by shifting Appling back to shooting guard and having that pure passer from wherever running the point.
Seriously though, if the worst thing Seth Davis can come up with is that our really good point guard isn't a great point guard, and that our full-figured center doesn't move like a ballerina, we're probably in pretty good shape.
I don't entirely think Davis is right. As someone else pointed out, MSU hasn't had a true pass-first PG since Mateen. Hell, last year Day Day ran the point sometimes. Having a PG who can score is a problematic matchup for the other team's defense. And let's say we did have a true PG, shifting Appling to the 2. Who in the current lineup goes to the bench? Harris? Dawson? I wouldn't want to give up either's ability in favor of a true PG.
Davis would have had a point, were this published 12 or 13 months ago. But Keith's performance boost this season in comparison to last season is marked.
Shut up, Jigsaw Man.
VERY WELL SAID
That's the thing..with this lineup we have, I think I'd rather have an Appling that can both be "serviceable" as a passer and also be one hell of a fast slasher/driver and pretty good at hitting the open jumper. He's a lot more athletic than the classic "pure point guard".
Appling keeps hitting 3 3s per game and he's a fricking superstar. Assists are highly over rated when the entire team can pass the ball and/or slash too..which ours can..
Craft is going to quit basketball?
Appling is a SG in a PG's body and has the mentality of a SG as well but he's been pretty solid for us at PG out of necessity, if Trice is our Point we have 5 less wins IMO
Craft will be back and Frazier of PSU, too. Appling will have to both shoot and pass better than he does to get close to the NBA.

Unless you're a Westbrook that is a big time scorer (and ball hog) you can get away with not being a high volume assist PG.
Isn't Westbrook averaging 7 or 8 apg?
It's also a longer game in the NBA (48 minutes to 40 minutes) so assist averages can be a little higher than college. In college, his APG would probably be around where Appling's is - 4.3.
It had been a wonderful evening and what I needed now, to give it the perfect ending, was a little of the Ludwig Van.
It's worth noting that, while Seth Davis is a congenial fellow, he's usually wrong about everything under the sun.
If Appling wants a future in the league, he will need to become comfortable at PG. He's getting there and by the time he is a senior he will be even more of a star
"If you're worried about Wolverine fans, just move to Pasadena. You'll never have to deal with 'em."
If Appling improves as much as he has done from last year to this year next season, he can be a back up pg in the NBA. He has the speed, athleticism and is a good defender. Just look around the NBA at some of the back up point guards. The Lakers have Blake whose shot has gone into retirement and can't guard a table and Duhon can't guard and can't shoot. With guards in the league like Irving, Westbrook, Rose etc. they are extremely difficult to guard and somebody like Keith who can defend will get a shot. Also remember Eric Snow? He made his living as a defensive guard in the NBA. I am confident Appling will be one of the top point guards next year in college.
Trice would be far worse at running the team than Keith. His handle isn't as strong, he's a step slower and he's not blessed with advanced vision.
Honestly Denzel is the only other player on the team who could potentially handle the job better than Appling due to his superior vision and passing but we would probably have to live through a couple weeks of hair pulling mistakes and growing pains before a better PG would appear.
Long term though, it wouldn't work. Reason being, Dawson is simply better at the 3 spot where he enjoys the benefits of a size mismatch and Keith and Gary both have to start. There's just no room for Denzel or Trice for that matter in the starting lineup.

Well, I meant if you are a big time scorer as a PG you can get away with it even if you aren't a high volume passer/assist guy.

This is fucking stupid. Appling may not be a "true" PG, but the bottom line is he gets the job done, he's incredibly clutch and one of the elite guards not just in the Big Ten but the nation. We go as far as he takes us.

Is Mateen Cleaves circa 2000 walking through that door? If not, Appling is about the best option out there in the conference. Trey Burke is close but prone to take terrible shots down the stretch.

It is ALWAYS a great day to be a Spartan!!!!
I'd love to see Trice on the floor with Appling more often.......Travis at the 1 and Keith at the 2 is a nice backcourt.....
