That would not work. Only a limited number of people will pay for this type of site. While all the members would be paying members, the total membership would be a fraction of what it is now. I am not an e-commerce person, but I imagine that would not be good for advertising revenue and might eventually impact the amount of coverage 247 can offer
The biggest attraction is the boards. I am not sure people will cough up the money just for message boards when it will be a smaller number of fans to interact with and there are free options elsewhere. A patient person can wait and get all the recruiting info they want for free within a week of it hitting the internet. Besides, people are mainly interested in recruiting rankings and final decisions, which are readily available for free.
I think people were more inclined to donate when it was a private and independent board. I know I was, but am not inclined to pay for a corporate board that is a Rivals spin off.
Clearly it is a business model that is working (in theory) for other team boards, since they have gone VIP-only. Why wouldn't it work here where people are apparently even more addicted to the OT banter, not to mention the sports-related content?
My hunch is that ad revenue pales in comparison to VIP revenue, so the potential for lost eye balls is outweighed by the possibility of more donars for most of these boards. But that's only a guess.
I appreciate that Trevor has tried to keep the original open door policy of tRCMB. I donated to the old board because it was just him trying to keep the thing afloat, but I don't donate to this one because I don't really care about recruiting news or insider info that is usually hours behind other sources. I come for the entertainment, and I probably wouldn't pay for it if forced to make the choice. Hopefully he's able to keep the open concept of the old place going, but I wouldn't blame him if it becomes unfeasible at some point.

Creative theory but not the case Fletch.
So why do other sites like Bama go VIP-only if it's less profitable? Just to avoid the spam?
If your theory is that they're going VIP-only just to avoid the spam, that's incorrect. Some of those sites have used that model for close to 15 years.
You're right about the business model working, but I wonder if it can support the whole site. Would it get to a point where a few schools essentially subsidize the rest of the sites on 247? I imagine the Alabama board is a profitable endeavor as VIP only. That is a school that once got 90,000 fans to show up to a spring game and its fans are likely to pay for premium content. However, most teams do not have such rabid fanbases hungry for all things [enter school name here]. Those fans would likely not be willing to pay for premium content.
I say this in the context of 247 not being the only player in the game. Rivals has a head start, and if people have settled in paying at one site (reading content by its writers, associating with the same fans on its boards) how is 247 going to attract newcomers with a VIP only approach?
Edit: I also appreciate the work of the site admin. I have also been joking about the spam and in this thread, but need to say that since I do not pay I cannot complain.

As mentioned other times, it would be nice to have VIP-lite for those who really aren't into recruiting but wish to support the message board. I don't understand how their business model precludes increasing revenue. I was always more than willing to donate for the old board (even ponied up donate for others), and it would solve spam, trolls, and Nucky. Just sayin'...
BTW, tBarnes, that photo of the little guy--cute!
No, my theory is that our 247 overlords don't have much of an incentive to solve our spam problem because it might increase our odds of going VIP-only, which means more revenue for them.
But I also spend a lot of time looking out my window for black helicopters.
Bama fans like to get recruiting news. Bama fans go VIP to get recruiting news. Profit?
I've never been VIP, and I've left this board for periods of years to 6 months at times, even when it was free, Probably have been a member since 2000-2001 ish. The last time I took a sabbatical, was a few months ago I was gone for 6 months to prove a point to a ND friend of mine. (Left right before the MSU - ND game came back last month or so.)
I didn't miss it. In fact I found that Twitter has pretty much replaced most value I get on this board in terms of breaking news and random banter. I came back because...WTH, I was bored. If this place goes pay, I know of plenty of other forums for these functions. I'm sure other non-VIP posters feel the same way.
Additionally, if this place goes 100% pay, you probably see a bump at places like "The Only Colors" or new places will develop and many casual fans/poster will end up there. The RCMB is not a monopoly it's just the most established (because frankly it's survived and it's the oldest).
I also think that if this place goes 100% pay it loses it's charm. Probably becomes a clone of "The Underground Bunker"....and I don't think there is room in the fan base for both.
I think they are totally fine with our boards being non-VIP. They understand that we historically haven't been that way.
That being said we're going to be making the Duffy, Bres, and Wells boards temporarily VIP-only to post. This is not a long term solution, and I certainly don't want to make that permanent.
Please god no, dont make wells VIP only . . . then THEY will come here. I'd rather have spam.
Wasn't Wells made subscriber only at the old vBulletin site to try and decrease the lunacy? I approve.
35,600 posts and counting since 09-09-2002. tRCMB Dead Pool Commissioner.
This is a good point and needs to be considered.
Incidentally, they will still not require VIP to read. Again, this is temporary.
No they will not
I donated on the other site as well, for the reason you did. Trevor keeping a good product going and not having to pay out of pocket.
247, while free for what I use it for, is not as good of a "product" and feels like it's putting as little money and effort as possible into making the boards great, and everything into squeezing as much donate as possible out of people for recruiting stuff and ad revenue.
Not saying that's the case, just the way it appears.
I'm sure there are ways to solve the spam problems, and the captcha for new threads, or a very small charge on a card to register a username (hell, make it $.32 or something...just anything so you have to put in the info and pay anything) seem like decent ideas that would be easy to do. If I wanted to respond to a comment on another board, I'd most likely pay the 32 cents to do it knowing I could go back and post from that point forward.

What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...
Me? Not even close...He is terrible for the aviation industry in general and even worse for business aviation.
And so it begins...or ends...or something...
Take it to wells . . .
Is this the thread about gun control?
I'm just going to PM Noah and ask him to solve this problem.

Oh goodie - Bob and Bee will post more on this board then.
